(Timeline Tuesday #38)
Slogs are incredibly dangerous creatures from a distant timeline, enigmas many researchers are too fearful to study. While they may appear as a simple living deviation of a natural wooden log, the power they possess is far more destructive.
Based on appearance, most scientists believe this species is, in fact, a form of living flora. However, it’s also possible this appearance is simply a way of blending in on their home timeline. It is hypnotized these creatures are not aggressive or predatory in their home reality, just simple prey for some even mightier creature.
Regardless, a slog’s defense mechanism has horrific consequences on most other layers of existence.
It is known by scientists that the flow of time is malleable, curving through space and slowing around sources of enormous gravity. The slog has somehow harnessed this energy, using time to protect itself.
The closer a living being gets to a slog, the more that creature’s personal reality begins to slow. At approximately twenty feet away, this change becomes noticeable to the casual observer. The slowing of time grows at an exponential rate when living creatures approach a slog, until finally time will completely stop upon touching the creature.
Fortunately, it is difficult to do this by mistake. When inches away from the slog, this movement would feel like hundreds of thousands of years. However, if a slog is startled it may rush toward you, causing a victim to be trapped in moments that become an eternity. Any longer than six months of significantly slowed time can cause irreparable mental trauma.
