(Timeline Tuesday #6)
Needeers are an incredible dangerous species of Cervidae from an adjacent timeline. Their home timeline is so close, in fact, that needeers who wander into this reality do so through a direct tear between worlds. In contrast, many other creatures who arrive in our reality must specifically seek it out, or make their way through several other layers along their journey.
Needeers resemble the common deer of our world, but with one prominent distinction. They sport a similar coat of soft fur, ranging in a variety of earthy browns, but the needeer’s body is also covered by a haphazard array of long, sharp spines. These spikes can grow to approximately two feet in length, sticking straight out from the creature’s body and constructed from the same material as their antlers.
These distinct protrusions serve as a means of protection for the needeer, prompting most predators to avoid them entirely.
Unfortunately, the spikes also cause a substantial amount of grief for the social lives of the needeer. Unlike most mammals, needeer lay eggs. One creature will provide an eggsack while another will fertilize it, a system that allows the animals to procreate without getting too close to one another.
Needeers are herbivores, and are incredibly loving creatures, but they also sport a surprising distinction as one of the most dangerous animals in the wild. The creatures are so fond of humans they will often approach for food, or in an effort to receive gentle pets. While it is possible to use extreme caution and touch a needeer, the vast majority of these encounters results in injury or death. Because of this, it is advised that anyone who encounters a needeer keeps their distance and stays alert.
