Weekend Watching

Fun Fact: weekend (n.)

also week-end, 1630s, from week + end (n.). Originally a northern word (referring to the period from Saturday noon to Monday morning); it became general after 1878. As an adjective, "only on weekends," it is recorded from 1935. Long weekend attested from 1900; in reference to Great Britain in the period between the world wars, 1944.

Finished Scarlet Heart; finishing Hometown Chachacha and K2. Thinking Something in the rain for the next one.

Eve is my weekday viewing with my sister, who is loving the trashy, soap opera-y OTT-ness of it all. I’m mostly horrified at the icky antics of all but the (?) SML (the assemblyman who used to be the lawyer, aka the good guy…question mark lol), but am trying…nearly lost it when the ML’s wife started talking about vaginal plastic surgery. Just…yikes. Anyway. Yesterday I watched E1 of Alchemy of Souls. It feels very old school Asian fantasy to me, and they got some $$ from Netflix for a very smooth, pretty first episode. The Hong Sisters always feel cold to me, in the way they focus on plot over characters (giving Hotel del Luna the ole side eye), and AoS was no exception; none of the characters grabbed me, but I do love the idea behind the 4 Seasons, so we’ll see what happens. I also loved the mage families setup, and the elemental component to their magic. So it’s fun, but still needs to engage me. Otherwise doing a Healer rewatch. I’m on E7. It’s just…SO GREAT.

I think there are a lot of folks here who would say you should stick with it (so hopefully they’ll jump in) but if I’m being honest I found the show kinda slow. I finished, but it was a push. If that’s you, you’re not alone. 😊

I'm unconcerned with finishing anything, so I'm excited to start Alchemy of Souls which had a fantastically drama/tragedy/comedy trailer - which as we discussed hear could mean absolutely nothing - and continuing Prison Playbooks so I can finish it before the podcast.

I struggle telling people apart, but in Reply 1988 everyone's character was so distinct that there was no question of who was who, even while wearing identical wigs. What a pleasure.

Started Alchemy of Souls - because fantasy romance - is a sweet spot and enjoy historical added in. Hope it plays out well. Finished Sh**ting Stars which enjoyed more than expected as ended up being a bit more ensemble cast with interesting arcs. Dropped Woori the Virgin. Watching cdrama Dream of Splendor which has some really memorable scenes. Showed scene of the actress to my teenage girls where she looks like her previous character of Mulan so we will rewatch Mulan this month

I’m watching Extraordinary You. I kept thinking it was ending but now see there are 30 episodes! These ones after 20 are all starting to look alike. Is it worth finishing?

I am watching Why Her? and just started Yumi’s Cells 2. Liking both, not just for the hunky heroes. 😊 I waited to finish YC1, knowing that the breakup was coming, but I think it was handled well: both Yumi and Woong suffered from poor communication that led to their downfall. In #2, Ba Bi is so refreshingly open that I’m hoping it will rub off positively on Yumi. I also started a couple of others, Love the Way You Are, a delightful Chinese noona drama that’s full of familiar tropes but is quite adorable, and also When My Love Blooms, a weighty melodrama about 2 people who were in love in the past and meet again years later when both have lots of baggage to interfere with resuming their love. I’m rooting for them but it ain’t gonna be easy. It stars Yoo Ji Tae from Healer and other dramas and it’s nice to see him.

I finished From Now On, Showtime, which I really enjoyed - it was what I needed for escapism at the time - romance, action, fantasy, a good squad, it wasn’t a stellar KDrama but was good. I’m still slowly watching Happiness and pondering what my next currently airing should be. I might wait for Cafe Minamdang because I ❤️ Seo In Guk. The trailer for Extraordinary Attorney Woo also looks good - another amazing role for Park Eun Bin - but I hope they accurately nail the autism like they did in IOTNBO

It took me 7 full episodes before I was hooked. I ended up rooting for every single character. Fell in love with nearly each one at one point or another. It’s slow, exquisite pain as it reaches its best parts. The bromances grow and grow. That was probably my favorite but.

Began re-watching episode 3 or 4 of "Inspector Koo" so I could gauge my felting of the sad doll. Then got caught up in the villain and the web she weaves of her minions. So smart! So, re-watching the entire season. I'm sad to say that I just don't get "Mr. Sunshine"--too much nunchi gazing (is that the right word?). Am making myself watch one episode a day and I need help...please, if you like/love this drama, why? 1. Lee Byung-hun is handsome beyond measure 2. Am trying to figure out a pattern for a tea length hanbok (like Kim Tae-Ri wore on the ice lake) 3. Bromance is fun, witty 4. ?

I spent last Sunday afternoon binging the first six episodes of Kiss Sixth Sense on Disney+ (with a VPN, bc they are not available in the US😡). It was super good, lots of chemistry. Premise is a woman can see the future when she kisses someone and she happens to a see a future where she and her crabby mentor are spending the night together and she’s thrown. It’s Seo Ji Hye and I love that her character is both super competent at her job AND she still has social skills. I feel like so often you either get one or the other in a FL. Other than that, still watching: Woori the Virgin - It’s ok, but not amazing. Link: Eat Love Kill - Interesting premise, gets pretty dark, but I like both the leads Why Her: Just finished ep 5, so much politicking, but I’m still just here for Hwang In Yeop. Something was revealed in ep 5, that you finally understand what made the FL change into the woman she currently is.

I’m continuing with my second watch of Reply 1988 – but I'm taking it nice and slow. I think the first time I was more focused on the kids (young adults) and I was in a hurry to learn who Deok Sun’s end game would be; but this time I’m enjoying the storytelling and spotting the clearly planted seeds and the strategic misdirections. Or maybe that’s just hindsight. I’m also paying more attention to the adults and they are breaking my heart as they try to support and protect their kids. Yesterday I watched the Christmas episode where the adults tried so hard to restore little Jin-Ju’s belief in Santa by making a snowman for her - it was hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. I’m definitely crying more this time around.
