It's my birthday today and this reaction was the perfect present. Thank you. Absolutely delighted you're enjoying this so much. Its a genuine pleasure to rewatch these with you. Back in the day a group of us Doctor Who fans use to hang out in a pub in Soho London. The first Thursday every month well before the reboot. They included Robert Shearman who wrote this episode and Paul Cornell who writes another powerful episode later in the run. When the show came back it was such an exciting time. I remember talking to them about their writing process and couldn't wait to see their episodes. I wasn't disappointed.

2023-06-15 01:36:50 +0000 UTCThis is without a doubt, one of the best episodes of science fiction television ever made. I hope you can appreciate why I suggested you should do this episode before the Classic Who Daleks serial. I think it’s a much better more dramatic introduction to the Daleks. You get everything you need, and they’re only up against a single one. Eccleston absolutely shines in this episode, some of the best acting the man’s done in his acting career. That scene in the cell is one of the best in New Who. I love how much they play off each other as war ravaged survivors of conflict. Notice how when the Doctor says “Why should I? You never did” his face looks genuinely psychotic in the light of high voltage, and revelling in killing this last surviving Dalek. Absolutely masterful direction and writing. The main DW YouTube channel I follow is a dude called Mr Tardis, he did a fantastic shot by shot review of this episode. I absolutely adore the focus on the Dalek eye in so many shots as a cold lifeless image, looking into the eye of a creature that knows nothing else except killing anything that isn’t Dalek. Literally a space Nazi, you couldn’t get a better primary enemy in a sci-fi show than a space Nazi. One last point: In terms of the show’s developing story, this season for many can be split into two halves, BD and AD before and after Dalek. Before the episode, the Doctor thinks everything to do with the Time War’s over, he meets Rose, he starts to learn how to be a little more human again…and then we get this episode, and his memories of war, of death and destruction come flooding back to him, and he has to face it and end it, hence why he’s so much more menacing in this episode than we usually see the Doctor.

2023-06-14 19:20:51 +0000 UTCI’m really happy you’re loving the show so much. I think what surprised me was even stinker episodes like the last 2 parter Aliens of London and World War Three you said were amazing, which most who watch the show say those episodes are a bit lame with the goofy Slitheen and zipper head cringy cheesy bad sci fi. So if you loved even lame episodes like those then you’re going to really love the best episodes 😊

2023-06-14 13:21:04 +0000 UTCI certainly do. It's fun to read the nostalgia folks had on seeing the reboot and I think maybe more fun reading the nostalgia folks have with the classic show.
