An Update Regarding Ad-Free Episodes

We wanted to give a quick update about the $10 ad-free tier, as we’ve received a few questions regarding how it works since we joined the Pickaxe podcast network. In the move to Pickaxe, ads were retroactively added to all previous episodes of the podcast. This means many older episodes are currently unavailable in an ad-free form. To be more specific: as we’ve been manually uploading ad-free episodes to Patreon since around February or 2024, all episodes prior to that date are only available via the public podcast feed and now include ads. Honestly, this was a bit of an oversight on our part.
Some have reached out in the past few weeks asking about the availability of ad-free episodes prior to February 2024 and we’re actively working on a solution which will likely involve manually re-uploading the entire backlog to Patreon. This will obviously be a pretty slow process, and with Brendon (that’s me!!) in Japan this will realistically not happen until mid-June at the earliest (unless we can come up with another plan). We appreciate your patience as we figure out the specifics of how and when we can make this work in a way that isn’t totally disruptive (ie. inundating your feeds with a huge backlog as they get uploaded out of order, since Patreon doesn’t allow us to backdate our episodes).
We want to continue being transparent about the process here, and may post a poll with a few options in the near future to best get a sense for how best to go about this. Thank you for your continued grace, and thank you for backing the show and raising your concerns here.

This might be a good first step - Importing Audio from an External Host: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/32620357956493-Podcasting-Importing-Audio-from-an-External-Host I think this would bring all audio with ads to the ad-free feed. You’d then have to only replace the audio (if that’s possible). You’ll also need to omit any episodes that already exist in the ad-free feed. Sounds like subscribers wouldn’t be notified of these back dated episode, but their feeds might get a little noisy for a sec. At least it would save you on copying all the metadata and backdating. Just an idea.
