Orphan full commentary

I hope you all enjoy DroidC's pick for this month, this is one I've heard a lot about but didn't get around to seeing. Very creepy, very horrifying, hit me in my motherly heart a few times. I liked how the themes were both very simple and very complex.

Nah nah, I like knowing exactly what you're referring to. I've been known to do the same thing myself at times to other reactors 😊 I agree, it's kind of a cautionary tale so it doesn't need total accuracy. It's the atmosphere and the aesthetic that matters, so it definitely works.

No room for error on this one 😂

He was just painfully obtuse, he brought it on himself 🤣

Rhetorical Thrill

I'm glad they didn't, it was uncomfortable enough 😟

Rhetorical Thrill

He definitely was a shithead. It would have been bold to outright kill him though 🤣 Some of his behavior I get - your parents having a new baby is rough enough, but then all the emotional turmoil over the loss and it's easy for a boy his age to get lost in it all. And then your parents bring home a stranger that you have to accept as your sister, who's close to your own age and it's kind of a nightmare all around.

Yeah, I imagine the level of knowledge of Esther going in makes a big difference. And of course we don't see their relationship as a whole so he could be rational from a different point of view. It's just so frustrating being the only one who sees the truth so I related hard to Kate there.

Wow, I thought the whole orphanage thing was a distant relic.

End thoughts: There were a lot things the film was off about or at least things that seemed off to me. Obvious & open bullying, the hospital scene, a lot of the trapped in a kids body stuff. The film requires a lot of suspension of disbelief. All of that said, it’s one of my guilty pleasure films. It does a lot of stuff really well, the actors are great, the music, the tone, the violence, etc. A lot was left on the cutting room floor apparently. There’s an alt ending you can find on YouTube. I believe she wins? and kills the rest of the family and gets arrested? Not sure. Anyhow, thanks for the reaction. P.s. let me know if you want me to stop the timestamp commentary.

1:49:01, they old aged her w/ makeup, IIRC. 1:56:01, lmaooooo

DroidC

1:45:22, your laugh actually has me cracking tf up- you really hated him lololol.

DroidC

1:36:30, actual creepiest scene of the film. Again, I think I read somewhere it was supposed to go further in the initial script/edit.

DroidC

1:32:05, my real reaction to that scene lol! I think initially he was actually supposed to die in the original script/edit. I understand the boy was in the right, but he was such a shithead I almost didn’t mind.

DroidC

1:19:06, my perspective going into the film was pro Esther, so it definitely colored how I viewed the scene, but I can, in a vacuum, understand his perspective a bit.

DroidC

59:03, my favorite gaslighter! One of the creepier scenes in the film.

DroidC

45:01, always liked this scene- I wish the sister-“sister” relationship was a bit more prominent. When I first watched the film, I was hyped when max backed her. I have a really high ingroup loyalty for family & friends, which is why this film is so intriguing to me, in large part.

15:25, personal experience- it’ll depend on the state’s system. Often times there will be a group home/orphanage as a sort of “waiting room”, as a temporary solution. Usually the older the child the less takers there’ll be, and the longer you’ll have to wait for foster parents.
