Great reaction as always! Déagol and Sméagol were cousins. Déagol's name comes from an Old English word meaning "secret, hidden" and Tolkien invented the name Sméagol to be similar, using a root that meant "to crawl into (a hole)". He did something similar in The Hobbit with Dwalin (taken from an Old Norse list of dwarfs) with his brother Balin's name being a nonsense word created to be similar. Wormtongue is a human. A sad, pathetic human.
