Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 7x1 Full Reaction

Comments

I could never get into Firefly, for some reason. But I absolutely agree with you on Dollhouse. It’s an absolute must

Jillian Foy

This is a very late reply because I am so behind in watching Cass' reactions but I always wondered why they chose Westbury instead of Bath as Giles' home. I actually live 3 miles from Westbury & it is such a nothing of a town that you just drive through to get somewhere else so I can't for the life of me figure why they chose it 🀣

Kazza

Hope you react to Firefly and Dollhouse tho before moving on to movies... You'd really be missing on great TV if you chose not to react to them.

The Leon Czolgosz reference is so obscure that the closed captioning didn't even bother to figure out how to spell the name.

James Smith

Ugh. Season 7 is one of my faves. You're in for a good time.

I know it’s been a while, but you have already been introduced to this villain. I always wonder, how do reactors forget, especially since they are binging. I had to wait week after week, summer breaks, etc. But, I will give you credit, it has been a while (almost back to the beginning) so I can see how people forget. It will make sense soon! And hey, even after this final Buffy season, you still have 1 more for Angel. Still plenty of Buffyverse to get through!

Whitney Mercer

The biggest villian of them all is here...who do you think it could be?

Morgan Williams

I can't wait for you to experience the end of this magnificent show. It gets real!

That final Villain Sequence is all that most people remember about this episode, but it certainly is a DOOZY. I love seeing all of the characters again, but particularly The Master. To be honest, I wish that we'd had him as a villain for longer than we did. Season one may be a weaker season overall, but I love how he was one of the more Monstrous villains of the show. Very classic. Plus, for a show called Buffy the VAMPIRE Slayer, I can't help but feel that a Vampire Master should have been a bigger deal. Not for the whole series, of course, but at least into season two. Ah, c'est la vie. Halifrek mentioned "Mrs. Czolgosz" when reminiscing with Anya about her past as a vengeance demon. In "Superstar", Anya mentioned that she once granted a wish to make somebody fall in love with President McKinley. President William McKinley was assassinated by Leon Czolgosz in 1901. This is one of the most obscure references in the entire Buffy franchise. With regards to how Buffy is popular but not THAT popular with the masses, it's sometimes hard to remember that it was always a cult TV series. Very niche in the ratings. The people who watched it loved it, but outside of that core fandom not a whole lot of people DID watch it. That's why it hopped networks after season five, the ratings weren't there to keep the WB interested in keeping the show alive. I didn't watch the show when it was first airing, and at the time I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. I'm glad I've since gone back and experienced it, but it wasn't a cultural phenomenon that sucked people in. Not getting into upcoming story content, just Behind-The-Scenes info, there WAS talk of different spinoffs to be realized after season seven, but a new "Dawn and Her Scoobies" show wasn't one of them at the time. So that wasn't a plan while writing the rest of the season.

Season 7 is probably considered the most average season of the show. It's where I personally rank it. Some people hate it, some people like it. I have it above 1, 4 and 6 but below 2, 3 and 5. Since you loved season 6 and I hated it I'll be interested to see where you place 7.

idk man, shes hyper-aware but she isnt immune to surprise, while its a bit odd it also mkes sense that she would recoil to someone screaming in her face outta nowhere with 0 time to assess the situation all while being in a wary mindset

Ryan Macdonald

The UK geography is a little odd in this episode, in S6 Giles said that he worked with a coven in Devon, now he and Willow are working with the coven in Westbury, (even though the actual filming location is Anthony Stewart Head’s home near Bath). Those 3 locations are not so far away that characters couldn’t reasonably travel, just a little bit of lack of cohesion between writing across episodes and filming. Also the monologue at the end of the episode is fun; Big Bad line up (minus David Boreanaz presumably because of the cross network lawyers and stuff).

James Smith

I don't think this is anyone's favourite season, at the same time I don't think it's that many people's worst. This is a good season opener but there is one thing I do not like about it: Buffy's first reaction's to the dead people in the bathroom, it's very OOC for her to recoil, protect her face and advert her eye from the threat. You are my favourite Buffy reactor so I'm sorry this is the last season.

I'm happy to hear that you do in fact sleep from time to time - with all the content you've been putting out lately, I was beginning to wonder! Don't ever be afraid to take time off if you need to.

Lots of interesting hair styles going on. Everything from a scared arab girl with long brunette ponytail, to a british vampire with a blond curly afro ( and quite a tan?) to Buffy with long blond hair, to Willow with a short pulled-back ultra red, Giles with age-appropriate gray, to Xander with a style job? instead of the slacker raggedy look Principal had a hot alpha male cueball with a moustache/goatee combo, and huge eyebrows, perfectly trimmed to points at the end -- and a gold earring, did you notice that little hint of freaky? Buffy later parts her hair on the side, highly unusual ... Anya's one-sided drop (on the right?) looks adorable, and is perfect for her sad-girl pouty face right now. Halfrek's massive modern Victorian super mullet probably wins the big hair awards for the episode, tho. I think Dawn was wearing Willow's argyle sweater. Xander was Bob the Builder this ep. Buffy wore white. In the last scene the thing looking like Buffy was wearing all black.

Dark Willow also told Buffy that she gets the slayer thing now. It’s all about the power.

Crappy time of it at work just now. Made my day to see you’ve posted this and have something to look forward to when I finish! 🫢🏼

Of all the Spikes we've seen over the years crazy Spike might be one of my favourites.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Buffy's final line in Ep 1 "It's about power" is obviously a call back to her first line in the Ep when she is training Dawn. I remember watching Ep 1 for the first time and that final speech going back through all the villains blew me away. Then it finished on Buffy and I remember thinking -- did they just present Buffy as the ultimate villain??

First of all. I'm obsessed with this show, I used to watch it on TV, but I was really young then and it didn't really grab me as much as it could have. Relatively recently, about six months ago, someone or something reminded me of this show and I decided to give it another go. And now I can't get over it. Now, here's an interesting question that you didn't bring up. Buffy asks Spike if he's real. I don't think it's related to this whole ghost thing, obviously she doesn't know the faces of ghosts, but Spike is a different story. It's been a long time and she must have been looking for him, maybe seen him in her dreams many times, including ones that were very similar to reality. But every time it was a delusion, an illusion. And now he's here, he's real, and of course, you can touch him, and of course, Buffy is confused. There are also several comics about Spike's adventures after season 6 before season 7. From them we should make 3 important theses. 1. Spike didn't want to return to Sunnydale, which is completely normal, considering the circumstances of his escape and the fact that he now has a soul and looks at things differently. You see, he says he was preparing a speech, but I think that was done by the soulless Spike, who thought that he would have a soul and Buffy would meet him the way he deserved, and he would give a speech, and everyone would consider him a hero. Of course, after receiving the soul, everything changed and he now sees that this idea was ridiculous from the very beginning. 2. He copes with the soul quite well, which is also normal, considering that Angelus' soul was returned by a curse, and Spike fought for his soul. Well, not exactly for his own, but that doesn't matter. He doesn't have the delusions and hallucinations that we see in this episode. In general, this is the old Spike, except that all his dreams are nightmares, where he is the main character, in fact it is a retelling of his adventures, but now through the prism of the soul. He can still do whatever he wants, even kill. The chip prevents him, of course, but he can do other harmful things, for example, he can steal something, but now he considers it unacceptable, because Buffy definitely did not approve of such behavior. 3. They had an interaction with Halfrek. The latter believes that she saved Spike's life then, because everyone at that party where he recited his poems was supposed to die because of someone's wish, and with her cruel refusal, Cecily-Halfrek forced William to leave, which saved him. I think Spike doesn't really agree with that statement, because circumstances turned him into a vampire, which isn't a good thing either. There's also a comic about what happened to Buffy and Scooby after season 6 before season 7. There's nothing interesting there except that Buffy is back in the Initiative and a certain energy makes the recent manifestations seem more real than they were. In one of the cells she sees Spike, who must have been there for weeks, if not months, and she says to herself that he's been gone for weeks and that's probably for the best, meaning she would have had to kill him. But then we get a close-up of her face and there's no joy at all that Spike is gone. I think it really reinforces the fact that Buffy missed him and I don't think she could have killed him even after what he did.

Buffy is also my favorite show and season 6 is my favorite season. I think the reason Buffy isn't bigger is that premise sounds silly and it has a rough first season. It is hard to get people to give it a go and a lot of people drop it during the first season. But anyone who sits down and makes it though to the end of the second season is hooked. Season six is also why Buffy is such a popular show for people to watch reactions to. Now that you have seen it you know why. It takes your beloved characters and puts them in situations no other show would dare to. Season 7 isn't the best but has some great character episodes and manages to pull it together in the end for a satisfying conclusion to the show. So don't worry it's not going to ruin it for you.

I'm happy to hear that Buffy is your favorite comfy show because it's mine as well. I watched them when they aired in my twenties and I will be 50 this year and I still love the show.

Of all the videos that deserve a "First!" comment, this is the one.

Season 7: Let's go! "It's about power."

Steve Quast

Oh, this is good timing. Between this and your last Buffy upload I just caught up on your Angel reactions, which I had fallen behind on.
