who's The Master of Pain you keep referring to..?

Before this, I'd only seen Keith Szarabajka in the original (1980's) TV series The Equalizer, where he played the hero's sidekick. I think that's why I had a hard time liking his performance here. On The Equalizer he was so expert at cool underplaying that his Holtz feels too theatrical to me, almost hammy, in comparison.

The last space between the two Holtz flasbacks is actually a backwards time jump. When we saw him torturing Angelus last time it was in attempt to get even for what he did to Holtz's family. Now we're going back to see the particulars of that massacre.

I think it makes sense that the team could figure out how to work an ultrasound. They have Wes, who we know is very bright and he was trained in the Watchers Academy all his life. Who knows what kind of advanced courses they take there but I imagine caring for a young women’s health may be a possibility given that they’re trained to care and watch over Slayers. Potentially a slayer could get pregnant and need their Watcher (who may be the only one they have) to care for them. And his comment of “not having studied one of these in while” may refer to S1 when he took pregnant Cordy to doctor to get ultrasound. And then they also have Fred who is also extremely intelligent and an inventor. She’s a physicist by training so it’s not hard to believe that she could figure out how to work most tech and machines even if she hasn’t had experience with it before.

This episode is very plotty, but still a lot of fun. It's intentionally frenetic and a bit all over the place to keep us on our toes and put us in the Fang Gang's shoes. The next episode is better, but that's not a knock on this one; this episode just has a lot of set-up to do. The fakeout with the telekinetic ninja guy is so funny, it cracks me up every time I watch it lol The demon who brought Holtz to the present is called Sahjhan (pronounced Sar-jarn), and his actor (Jack Conley) was the werewolf hunter in "Phases", the Buffy episode where we find out Oz is a werewolf. I don't think I've seen him in much else except L.A. Confidential, but he's got great charisma and I always enjoy his scenes. Also, not sure if you noticed as you were looking down, but Sahjhan recruiting Holtz happened nine years after his family was murdered. And to clarify, the opening of the previous episode, when Angelus was captured in Rome, happened in 1771 after Holtz's family was already dead. The flashbacks are just being shown a bit out of order. Here's the timeline of Holtz from what you've seen so far: - 1764, Angelus and Darla kill Holtz's family. At this time, Angelus has been a vampire for 11 years. - 1765, Holtz tracked Angelus and Darla in Italy. They fled to France but were eventually trapped inside a burning barn thanks to Holtz. Darla escaped on their only horse and left Angelus to fend for himself. - 1767, when traveling with James and Elisabeth (the vampire couple from "Hearthrob") Angelus and Darla are tracked down in France because James burned down the villa of a Count, drawing Holtz's attention and Angelus' annoyance. James and Angelus are confronted in the street and Angelus tried to save himself by giving up the location of both Darla and Elisabeth. Holtz tries to kill them but they escape. - 1771, Holtz finally managed to trap Angelus in the sewers beneath Rome with the help of the excommunicated Archbishop who performed his wedding ceremony with his wife Caroline, along with his order of inquisitors. Holtz tortured Angelus for hours; but eventually Darla arrived and broke him free. They left Holtz behind and chose not to kill him as they now considered him "like family." Following this incident, Holtz gave up his hunt and became a hermit. - 1773, as we see in this episode Sahjhan appears to Holtz and offers to put him in suspended animation for 200 years. Holtz is played by Keith Szarabajka. He's done a lot of voice work, which is appropriate - he's got a great voice. In terms of live-action, I only recognise him from small parts in "The Dark Knight" and the Mel Gibson Vietnam war film "We Were Soldiers" (great film btw) I say it every time but Julie Benz is so good as Darla. When you stop and think about how many variations of the same character she's played it's pretty amazing. So excited for the next one!

It was only mentioned once and very briefly, when they knocked on the door to meet their henchmen, but we did indeed get a name for Holtz's demon buddy...Sahjan

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Very chaotic episode, lots of fun. The actor that plays the demon that brought Holtz to the 21st century, also played the werewolf hunter Cain in Buffy Season 2, lot easier to recognize when he has his "street face" and the actor isnt in the demon makeup

James Smith

Actually in the flash back Angelus said does she wanna do it or shall he, but whatever...
