I'm so glad you go on with the Marina journey. I was lucky enough to experience this album right after it came out, although I didn't have the chance to see her on tour, I experienced the album roll-out, the music videos coming out, the visuals, and Electra Heart has made it to my top albums of all time. It is worth going to Marina's official Youtube channel and watch the 11 part video series of Electra Heart. It's not always proper music videos, sometimes just visuals, and the songs are organized in a different order (Fear and loathing being the first, interestingly enough). It's an interesting take, please have a look if you have time. E.V.O.L. came out on Valentine's Day in 2013 - so almost a year after the album release - that's why it's not on the original album. The song Electra Heart also came out much later - it was the closure of the era - at the end of the video she wipes off the heart off her cheek - the heart that she was wearing during the whole era. It's pretty iconic. It's a well though-out era. Marina got really close to superstardom - Primadonna and How To Be A Heartbreaker becoming really huge, but she took a big turn with her following album, Froot. No radio play, fully supporting the album only on her social media, she wrote the whole album by herself and co-produced it with a single producer (David Kosten).

2025-01-18 20:51:40 +0000 UTCHypocrates and Buy The Stars are widely believed to be about her father, and it is Marina’s grandmother singing in Greek at the end of Fear and Loathing (she passed away between EH and Froot). So glad you enjoyed the album—it’s the most important concept album of the 21st century given its immense influence on other artists. I will also say that even though Electra is a character, it of course takes a lot from Marina who was reaching her peak commercial success and pressure from her label (+a bad break up), so a lot of the emotion is all Marina. Excited for Froot!

"Living Dead" brought to mind "Bela Lugosi's Dead" with the lyrics. That song was featured in the title sequence for "The Hunger" starring Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon, and David Bowie. Loved the music reaction just like I enjoy all of them. Cheers.

And I definitely think the original track listing tells the story better than the deluxe. I’ve never looked into why she changed the order, but HTBAH coming right after Fear and Loathing is a jarring transition, both sonically and thematically.

I will say that Electra Heart is a very visual album in the sense that the videos will explain a lot including Electra Heart's fate and the different personas of the album. I also wanted to point out that the heart on the cheek was just a little gimmick since Electra Heart always draws a little heart on her cheek so I assume it's just a reference to the aesthetic. I'm happy you liked the closing track (I thought you wouldn't) but that was the opener for the electra heart set during the FROOT tour and it was one of the coolest things I've seen, it

Also, Billie Eilish, Melanie Martinez and Sabrina Carpenter are big fans of Marina, I’ve always felt like Electra Heart is Crybaby’s “mom”. BTW, Marina has said that Electra Heart is a character based on an enhaced and more exagerated version of herself, so you nailed the character's POV!! Again, please keep up this journey, Marina’s latest album (ADIAML) is her best and I feel like you’d really enjoy it!!

2025-01-16 02:44:51 +0000 UTCLoved this reaction :) I always love hearing other peoples interpretations of her songs, especially Teen Idle and Hypocrates (it actually is about her father, you guessed that right) For some context: Marina's career has been somewhat turbulent. Electra Heart is actually the album she herself likes the least. At the time, her label was pushing her to be the next big pop star and she hated it. She pretty much rejects the whole concept of fame and the Hollywood industry. So she ditched her label and wrote her next album Froot completely by herself. She gets a lot more personal and political on her next projects. So I really hope you keep listening to her discography because now you're getting to the real stuff. But she's been my favorite since the Family Jewels, so take that with a grain of salt, i guess :D Anyways, always love seeing another video of yours. I found you through your Lana reactions and they're still my go-to whenever I feel down :)
