Comments

The comment about the first hotel scene changing your opinion of Ilya: Love that you clocked not only that the sex is very much part of the narrative, but also some of the key subtext of Ilya's character so early. So much is unsaid in this show, which makes it fascinating to rewatch.

*these comments are chronological, so they're not particularly coherent. Sorry about that Lmao, this is actually a hilarious way to rewatch the show. I will say, with the choice Ilya makes in the showers. His eyebrow raise was in response to Shane getting an erection from watching Ilya's dick and essentially eye-fucking him. So Ilya's responding by showing that he's also very interested, is it the best way he could have gone about it, absolutely not. Does it make the scene slightly better (for consent reasons), absolutely yes. Ilya is somewhat affectionately referred to as being somewhat of a consent king. Also, you're absolutely right, Ilya is a sweetheart. He's also very fragile, has to interact entirely in his second language and comes from an awful family in a cultural space that prosecutes people like him. He's very cocky, its a thing, its also his brand. Shane is on the spectrum which is why he seems so oblivious to a few things and is also part of the reason he struggles to pick up Ilya's hints; he also definitely needs hugs. Avoiding spoilers (as much as possible), Shane's ASD and loving family are part of the reason he keeps struggling to pick up on Ilya's hints and clues. Ilya, growing up in an abusive household in a country that criminalises his existence has to be very, very careful about what he says and does. So when he hints at something, he hints in a manner that carefully tests the waters with the people around him, he's hypersensitive to other people's emotions and reactions. Conversely Shane, growing up in a loving household doesn't have to watch his words in the same way, and his ASD combined with that means he doesn't necessarily see all the hints that Ilya gives him. The good old abused vs loved, safe (relatively) vs unsafe (very) does definitely play a large role in how their relationship is set up; as while Shane is terrified of it getting out, Ilya faces imprisonment or death. This dynamic plays a large role in their relationship and their misunderstandings, Shane in a manner of speaking is incapable of comprehending just how dangerous this is for Ilya, just how much it would cost for him to be open. Not to mention, there is also a language barrier, Ilya's second language is English and he's not amazing at it, so when they communicate there's always this barrier of one of them just not being capable of saying things. It was his dad at the draft, he's forgetting things. But at that point he is very much lucid enough to travel to other countries. With the question, as I put earlier. Ilya speaks English as his second language and at this point actually hadn't been learning it for very long. Regardless of that he's just not very good at English and it's a long question in a language he only half-understands, so it's less about the question making him nervous and more about the complexity of it and the need for him to translate it to Russian answer it and then translate it back to English before he speaks. One of the reasons they're pitted as rivals is due to the brands they both sell. Ilya is the 'Russian Bad Boy' and Shane is 'Canada's Golden Boy' so people just sell them as polar opposites. Scott doesn't actually know, but the show does make it look more like he knows than the books do. He's kinda too caught up in his own shit to realise. If I'm remembering correctly he does think back to it at some point in the books as a moment of 'wow I really should have known' but aside from that, somehow he does miss it. They're on the 12th floor if I remember correctly, could be lower, could be higher. But they definitely aren't within paparazzi/camera distance unless the press are using drones. Svetlana is Ilya's best friend, they hook up sometimes, friends with benefits. Svetlana also gives Ilya plausible deniability back in Russia, if he's constantly seen with women it is safer for him. Shane's just super overwhelmed at the end, too much going on. Because he's intoxicated (in my professional opinion as a fellow ASD haver) the overwhelm is worse but also harder to pick up on. It also makes it harder to pick up on facial cues (I definitely can't verify that, I avoid alcohol because it makes me good socially so I know I'd be a very dedicated alcoholic) so it exacerbates Shane's existing issues with communication; especially with Ilya's brand of incredibly subtle hints. Random side note: is kind of a spoiler I don't think there is any way to censor a comment from the commentors end unfortunately. So don't read this if you don't want mild spoilers about one of the characters: I'm dropping it like six lines down so if you want me to remove it I can. Ilya is not; especially at that moment, the kind of person you want to leave on a roof alone, especially when they're drunk.

I better see more episodes soon Mathew!! This is acquire more gay hockey player content.

Milo.

Omg Shane being on the spectrum explains so much!! I’m also on the spectrum. 💀

Milo.

I loved your reaction! I especially liked how many details you noticed. Just a quick side note: Shane is on the autism spectrum, which might help explain his reaction on the roof at the end and his inability to realise that Ilya has family problems. Ilya usually hints at things rather than saying them directly, which can sometimes be difficult for Shane to understand. As you said, they only meet in person every few months, either when they're playing against each other or attending an event. At this point, their relationship is purely physical — they're just fuck buddies. As they primarily communicate through sex and don't really have personal conversations, the intimate scenes play a very important role in revealing their personalities. It's great that you recognised in the first episode how much information about the characters is revealed in these scenes. I hope you'll continue watching the series!
