Get this, V, the aeronautical design for his plane, according to engineers, is actually more aerodynamic than the design we have settled on. It turns tighter, its faster, has better lift, and lands easier. But its best used for small one-man sized aircraft. It still works great as a larger design but you get the best results when its smaller. Also, get this, the reason we don't use it is literally because the owners of plane companies thought it looked stupid in comparison to the design we currently use, lol. Personal aesthetics won out over quality. The reason we don't change the design, according to interviews with engineers, is because we are so use to the way planes look now that people find the design uncomfortable when audience tested. So much of our tech could be better quality if we didn't care so much about how good it looks, lol. You nailed it, V! Lol. He’s a metaphor. The bombs did drop, in this universe, though. Godzilla’s origins are not in the films, exactly. Each film speculates more theories of how he began. Godzilla isn’t a “thing”, like not a dinosaur or lizard. There is no definitive origin story of Godzilla which means he is a metaphor for the looming danger for humanity that we have created with the dropping of the 2 nukes on Japan in WW2. A radioactive, possibly mutated, lifeform that was awaken once we dropped the bombs. A signal we have entered a new self-destructive era of mankind. We meddled in nuclear research, Godzilla is nature’s/the universe’s response. All the films follow this very interesting idea that once we unlocked and used the power of the atom, Godzilla popped into existence as a warning and threat to mankind. Additionally, Godzilla is the “king” of the Kaiju, giant monster tropes. He wasn’t the first giant monster story, with King Kong (1933) and the giant squid in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea coming before him (written by Jules Verne in 1869), but he has become the most notable. The origins of the giant monster actually stems from stories of the protector gods of Japanese mythology, like the forest gods in Princess Mononoke. One of the favorites, outside of Godzilla, is Gamera, a giant sea turtle that protects Japan from other giant monsters (and a favorite film series of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) guys because the films were cheap to get the rights to in order for them to riff jokes at while watching them, lol). Godzilla’s design, originally, is sort of comprised of reptiles (T-Rex, Iguanodon, Stegosaurus) fortified with radioactively melted metals and minerals of the Earth. In the 1998 American film, they say Godzilla is mutated from Iguanas so they gave him a more lizard structure to his behavior and movements. Most of the films mention that Godzilla ‘must have’ been an iguana mutated by all the radiation but honestly that doesn’t make a lot of practical sense and the characters say that too. But how did it mutate so fast? Why is it so destructive, aggressive, and aware but also why does he hold back and give warning shots? How did it grow and then why did it stop growing? How did it develop a radiation dragon breath weapon? In some films, Godzilla can’t use his breath attack unless he absorbs enough energy from all the attacks against him. These unanswered questions keep pointing to the idea that he is just a metaphor for the danger of the nuclear age manifested into reality. The name Godzilla is a mix of the words in Japanese meaning Gorilla and Kujira (Whale). His regeneration is a combination of the idea that reptiles regenerate limbs and the regenerative nature of cancer cells (the explosion of cancer patients after the testing of nuclear research and radioactive fallout). Because he is a mix of so many elements, he is more of a metaphor and concept of how reckless we were with nuclear research and weaponry. The ‘arms at his side’ is a nod to the old costume designs, lol. The ”Minus One” is reference to Japan’s economic status after the war. Japan was devastatingly reduced to nothing due to the shipping embargos cutting off supplies and the absolute drained resources they invested into the war. This was considered “Zero” for Japan, as in rock bottom, completely drained of resources and crops and wealth and capabilities. Godzilla showing up, yet another devastating event, pushed Japan into “Minus One” status. A status with no future of recovery in sight with Godzilla around. A culture seeing no way to move forward with this looming threat of devastation and annihilation just off shore. I would stay. Easy choice to fight for your people.

Thanks V! So much fun watching with your commentary. You would definitely enjoy the Godzilla/Kong MonsterVerse. But the pinnacle of kaiju movies would be the GAMERA Heisei trilogy of the 90s! Gamera is a giant turtle, who’s a friend to all children, guardian of the universe, and complete bad-ass!

If you liked the visuals is crazy when you realize this movie only had a estimated budget between 10 and 15 million. When this movie came out in theater here is the states, Japan though it wouldn't be very popular so thy had it run for a very limited time/ release. However, it quickly became so popular than they extended the theater run like 5 separate times and release a black and white version of the movie as a nod the 1954 film because of how popular it was. Many people would say it was easily one of the best movies of the year and was funny how it released shortly after Oppenheimer. Also, since it is hard to miss, in the movie it shows the first version of Godzilla being mutated after being caught up in nuclear bombs testing before the boat scene. So this version of Godzilla was a creature that was mutated by the bombs and given powers.

Vicky, this was fun to watch with u. I hope u will watch the Godzilla on HBO Max. It's the 1954 one and 1 hour and 37 minutes.Since u liked this one, please watch the Monsterverse with Godzilla and Kong. If u google Monsterverse, it will give u the order in which to watch them. I think it's a must that u watch King Kong Ultimate Edition . It's really good. Spielberg saw this 3 times and is a long-time Godzilla fan. He also cited Godzilla as an influence. Next, i hope u will also start the Bond films from the beginning. Daniel Craig's Bond are the more serious films, but the older ones made him more fun and playful. so i'm anxious to see how u like the older Bonds. thank u for being u and i follow u on IG and everywhere else. My feeds are full of alot of Youtubers that i follow and i subscribe to 130 channels at least. I hope ur allergies don't get too bad. Keep on keepin' on.

here is my list of the best Godzilla movies, as someone that has seen all of them, I would list Godzilla(1954) Mothra vs. Godzilla(1964), Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster(1964), Invasion of Astro-Monster, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs MechGodzilla, Terror of MechaGodzilla, all of the Heisei( 1984-1995), “Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack”Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla , Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., Shin Godzilla as the best Godzilla movies and would make a great Godzilla marathon. I would also recommend that you watch “ The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” which inspired Godzilla and features the amazing work of Ray Harryhausen.

MrDannySteele

Yesss! this was one of my favorites of 2023 (along with John Wick 4) so I'm super excited to re-watch this one along with you!

Good news is minus one is amazing so I'm looking forward to this reaction, bad news is you've started with the best one so the others might be a bit disappointing but I hope you still watch them especially 2014 one

Matt

Wait, why put a movie you planned on watching anyway on a poll? This movie got like 5th place like 6 days ago, lol. With recording and edit time, I'm assuming you just watched it right after it lost, lol. And like, "I'm gonna watch it anyway", lol, which is up to you but why put it on a poll in the first place, lol? You know there is a trick to finding out what you really want to do if you're going back and forth on this kind of thing. Flip a coin. It doesn't matter the result of the flip but what does matter is which side you were hoping it would be. When you're on the fence about something, its a quick brain hack to know which you really prefer and then you can decide if you indulge in what you want or break from your comfort zone.

Raptor

Oh it would have been awesome if you saw Godzilla 2014. It has Brian Cranston in it. its an awesome move that kicked off the monster verse

Thats MR. Baldamort

Happy Thursday, V. I hope the mold control is progressing well.

Tom W.
