When I was in college, I liked to put movies on as background as I did homework. One night I put this movie on. I did not get my homework done that night.
I found something similar happening here. I'd get into the movie and then go, "Oh, right the Schmitts were saying something."
Towards the end, with Craig blocking all those shots, I started thinking of the Russian in Rocky IV when he says it's like hitting a steel wall.

Love this movie, one of my all time favorite sports movies. Couple of fun facts for it that always amazes me. Over 4,000 men tried out for the 20 slots on the U.S. Olympic team for this movie, casting was mainly looking for skillful hockey players. So acting was actually secondary in importance. And for most of them, this was their first major film, and I know most didn’t do much acting afterwards either. A sad bit of news, Michael Mantenuto the actor who played Jack O’Callahan, stopped acting and joined the US Army Green Berets. I believe he did two tours in Iraq and sadly died of a self inflicted gun shot wound in 2017.

PS Kurt Russell was a Disney teen star starting out. It might be fun to check some of those films out. I think they are late ‘60’s and/or early 70’s. Corny but maybe fun.

I'm a huge Flyers fan (this season was an embarrassment, I know!). That 1976 game was one of the greatest hockey games ever. I have it on DVD and and it's always fun to watch. Ed Snider, Flyers owner, was one of the best this city has ever seen. Since he passed away the franchise has gone straight to hell.

Just take solace in the fact that in 1976, the Philadelphia Flyers, a team infamous for their dirty and super physical play, beat the crap out of the Soviet team so bad in an exhibition game, the Soviets left the ice. They were refusing to continue because the Flyers were kicking the shit out of them so hard. 🤣. They only came back and finished when they were told if they didn't, they wouldn't get paid. (Guess there's a little capitalist in everyone .). Tho the Flyers were almost universally hated during that time for their play style, they were America's team for that one night. The full game is available on YouTube. It's actually an entertaining watch, seeing them get physically dominated by dudes nowhere as big as they were.

Still angers me to this day Kurt Russell was looked over for an Oscar for his portrayal as Herb Brooks. Ironically this film got one nomination from the Golden Stinker awards for Kurt Russel as “worst fake accent”. (luckily he lost because you don’t tell Kurt Russel he’s bad at anything)

Sounds like a marijuana movie?

I'll second the recommendation for Warrior from 2011. Think of it as a modern day Rocky, but it totally stands on its own. One of my favorite movies!

Unlawful Entry is one of those overlooked films that I think lots of people would love. I used to watch it all the time as a kid, and it used to terrify me.

Great reactions, you two!
Most of the film is true to the events. A good documentary about the 1980 US Hockey Team's "Miracle on Ice" is 2001's, "Do You Believe in Miracles? The Story of the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team". A one-hour telling produced by HBO. In it, you can see there were a couple of areas that were dramatized or time compressed for dramatic purposes.
When the Colorado Springs training center opened to the various players, Herb did not have the team already picked and it was a one-day affair. Herb may have already had his players picked, but they did have one-week to 10-day sessions where the players were broken up into four teams and the teams played a round-robin style tournament. The teams were East, Michigan, Minnesota, and an at-large team. During those games Herb was evaluating the players.
During the team’s leg into European competition, they were playing the Norwegian team, a team they would have to play in the qualifying round in the Olympics. Herb issued a challenge to the team to play like it was the Olympics (i.e. send a message). Like it showed in the film, the team was playing lackluster, and Herb was pissed. So, he did indeed have the team perform those drills (they called them “(Herbies”). They did 45 minutes to an hour of “Herbies”. The rink attendant DID turn the lights out! However, it DID NOT stop because Mike Eruzione said the “Mike Eruzione, Stoneham Massachusetts. I play for the United States” line. It was used for dramatic effect in the movie, however.
But all in all, it was a pretty accurate movie of the times the events took place in, the team, and the games. Still one of my favorite sports movies. I watch the movie and the documentary on a regular basis.

Another movie based on a true story is Friday Night Lights. If you haven't watched it yet its based around a coach and several of his high school students in their final year playing football. Great sports drama. I cant find any other reactors that posted their reaction to the film, maybe you could be first.

I don't know why people crap on that movie so much. It was a lot of fun. Especially that second half.

Another fun hockey movie is Slap Shot with Paul Newman. It's a sillier side of hockey, but a lot of fun to watch. I have never been into any sports, but I find sports movies fun to watch because they always have so much heart.

Herb Brooks didn't live to see this adaptation but I'm sure he saw the documentary that preceded it by a few years, that's how I first learned about this true story. I think it was an HBO Sports documentary, they're always so well done. Amazing casting too, especially as far as the coaches, Kurt Russell really nailed Brooks' gum chewing lol and portrayed his intensity pretty well, even their eye color was a good match. Great movie even though I'm sure they toned down the colorful language a bit, being a Disney movie lol, but yeah, great reaction as always as well!

Every time I see Mark Johnson looking up at the clock and seeing 59 seconds, I get chills. That last minute of the game was the most tense moment ever! This film is such an accurate portrayal of the actual game. They did a great job. Kurt Russell was terrific too.
