True Romance (1993) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Fabulous Movie... the usual Great reaction from Daniel and Sam

Charles Mitchell

James Franco in Pineapple Express being based on Floyd just makes that role that much better.

Erich Bomke

thats beside the point - his point was since your gonna kill me anyway and you can tell if im lying im gonna give you a history lesson that youre not gonna like and its truth since you can tell if im lying

dw

now you should watch some sonny chiba films --- street fighter - return of the street fighter - street fighters last revenge - karate bear fighter and champion of death - awesome 1970s karate

dw

Pump Up the Volume is my favourite Christian Slater film, and probably in my top 10 films ever. I'm amazed how well it ages, and like you, I can keep watching it every year.

Future Boy

I still watch Pump Up the Volume at least once a year. First time I saw it was via pay-per-view back in the early 90s after what I assume was its brief theatrical run. I saw the trailer and knew I would love it. Happy to have a copy on DVD because I never see it streaming or on Blu-Ray.

Mitchell Smilie

Guys, this is a classic film! the infamous scene with Dennis Hopper (although offensive) is quite clever. He knew he was dead anyway, so he intentionally infuriated Walken so he would be killed quickly!!!

Chris Bruneau

Finally this to me is a better love story than Romeo and Juliette.

Richard Flanagan

Another great reaction! I remember randomly watching this movie on HBO shortly after it premiered on the channel. At the time, I was a huge Christian Slater fan, and I had never heard of Quentin Tarantino. Oh, what a ride I was in for. The standout for me by a mile is the Drexl showdown. That "battle of wits" culminating in the chaotic violence could have lasted for a solid 4 hours, and I would have been just as glued to the screen as I was. So intense, so cool, so violent. This was my first exposure to Gary Oldman also, not realizing that it was the same dude from Bram Stoker's Dracula and Immortal Beloved. Once I connected those dots, he had himself a pretty big fan. Anyway, glad you guys had as much fun watching as I did!

Gary Giaimo

lol.

Alex

He is definitely the king of hyperbolic violence and throwing all filters and social taboos to the wind.

Alex

You've seen Pulp Fiction already?

Alex

I don't think Tarantino would want any other kind of reaction haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes!! It's so fantastic overall and literally every actor was perfect! Ah interesting! We assumed the Uncut/Director's Cut was much more violent! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha after watching Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, I definitely would have run to purchase anything with Tarantino's name too! I believe the only scene difference (from google) was actually the scene with Samuel L. Jackson! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thanks, Ellie! Still working on those early releases :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha we had no idea what to expect and it blew us away! Thank you for the Slater recommendations! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you for the recommendations! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha yessss love this comment! Every actor absolutely killed it! Patricia Arquette was just perfect as Alabama! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

This was fantastic! We haven't seen Natural Born Killers, but we loved True Romance! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha that was so intense! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

What?! No way! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We loved it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Gary Oldman was so good! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely on the list! We'd love to explore more Brad Pitt films :) -Sam

The one thing I really loved from this movie was the "You're So Cool" track.

Donna Castellano

Watch the Director's Cut of Prince of Thieves. Added back in the subplot of the Sherriff and another important character. Gave more motive other than just "evil".

Donna Castellano

Yeah, he knew exactly what buttons to push. God I love that whole scene. Christopher Walken is absolutely brilliant.

Joel P

Sadly, for Drexel... it was.

Philip Alan

Daniel at the end "What the hell was that?!" That was a Quentin Tarantino movie mang.

Alex

In the scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper, I believe he told that story about Sicilians because he knew he was going to die, so he wanted to force a quick death on his terms.

Vwlss Nvwls

I love all Christian Slater parts, he has been a favorite of mine since I saw him with his sister in Legend of Billie Jean. I think my favorite movie is Kuffs, because it's all pure Christian Slater, with him constantly breaking the fourth wall.

Vwlss Nvwls

I was a huge Christian Slater fan before I saw this in the theater, and he did not disappoint. I absolutely love the scene when Clarence and Drexel meet, it's my favorite scene of the movie followed closely by the scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper. Gary Oldman did his usual phenomenal job in his part, despite how little he is in the movie. I just cannot say enough good things about this movie, even the running theme song is just perfect. The only things I notice different in this from the theatrical version is the sex scene at the start is much longer, and the scene when James Gandolfini is beating up Alabama is much more brutal. It was brutal in the theatrical version, but not as long, and without her wild screaming and beating him with the shotgun. I am sure there were more additions, but those were the only things I recognized as different from the theatrical version.

Vwlss Nvwls

"I ain't got a pot to piss in, or a window to throw it out of." but there's a window right there lol.

Alex

I bought this movie, I believe, back in 1994 on VHS...yes, I'm that old. I had just seen Pulp Fiction in theaters, and Reservoir Dogs--also on VHS. The only thing I needed to purchase it was the name Quentin Tarantino somewhere on the box. I believe the scene with Alabama and the hitman in the hotel room was a part of the extended director's cut--the part where she just keeps hitting his dead body with the shotgun over and over again--only I swear I remember that in the version I first watched, which was not a director's cut. But I don't know, that could just be a failing of memory. Love this movie. I am curious, without any disrespect to Tony Scott, who did a magnificent job, what this movie would've been like, and looked like, and who would've starred in it, if Tarantino himself had directed it. That said, I have a hard time picturing anyone else in any of the roles. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette killed it in this movie.

Steve Mercier

I gotta say in response to Sam saying "I guess people don't associate it with him because he didn't direct it." (Tarantino) .. I know nothing about this movie and I watched the trailer and I was like.. it's gotta be Tarantino, and was shocked when it's a different director, but it is Tarantino for sure. I had no idea and I just knew 10 seconds in it was a Tarantino movie.

Alex

The original script was called The Open Road and was something like 500 pages long, but it was broken up over time and split into those two movies. Both films underwent rewrites and became their own scripts. True Romance stayed true to Tarantino's script for the most part, but changed the structure to unfold in a linear style instead of being told out of order (like Pulp Fiction). Natural Born Killers was rewritten multiple times by a few (3 or 4) different writers which is why Tarantino distanced himself from the movie and didn't really approve of how it turned out.

Joe Lazarus

Thx for the early release! I like you guys. Always have, always will. I'll pick up some beer and cleaning products. Sam rules!

Ellie Miller

Yes!! Alan Rickman stole the Show with his Performance !! For me the best Robin Hood !!!

Florian Meier

What a reaction. And going in cold, it's impossible to know how crazy the ride's gonna be. I think this might be Tarantino's best script. It's definitely the one I enjoy the most! I would love to one day to see reactions for Heathers (1988) and Pump Up the Volume (1990). By far my two favourite Christian Slater films, and two of the very best films about high school you can watch.

Future Boy

Tarantino's always said how true Tony Scott stayed to the script, but Scott definitely changed the structure a lot. Originally, it was non-linear, like many of Tarantino's stories. In the original script, the first time you meet Clarence and Alabama, they're already married and have the drugs, and you don't know how they met or where the drugs came from. You see the early scenes later on, and only then do you fully realise what's happening. Tarantino explains all of this in a 6 minute video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJDWz6uRsTA I wonder how it would have felt to watch it with that original structure the first time around...

Future Boy

Oh My god, I love Dennis Hopper in that Scene :) Other Dennis Hopper Movies worth Seeing that aren't currently in the List are "Hang Em High" from 1968 with Clint Eastwood !! Great Western !! Than "Black Widow" from 1987 with Debra Winger ... Great Thriller !! And "Red Rock West" from 1993 with Nicolas Cage !! Classic !!

Florian Meier

Dan: "But I've never even heard of this movie..." Sam: "I haven't either..." I think my hype meter broke at that point :) This is one of my favourite films of all time and so I was already pumped about the reaction... but you guys knowing NOTHING about it ahead of time is just perfect! And, yep, definitely agree with your thoughts at the end. Basically every single actor/actress in the film, no matter how small their role, totally killed it. But the scene between Walken and Hopper was so far beyond fantastic that it's kind of shocking. I watched this religiously when I was younger but haven't really seen it since. Damn, that brought back a whole lot. I was in love with Patricia Arquette for a very long time after seeing this for the first time :) Best reaction yet! :D

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Yea Brad pretty much doesn't do bad movies. I just like to recommend films that I think would probably not win polls but are just as good or maybe even better than some of the poll winners.

Jonathan Patrick

I could go for a True Romance sequel about LITTLE ELVIS falling in love for the first time. Bring back Dick Richie and Floyd as well!

Jason Dolan

I like how Clarence is all "Coming Home in a Body Bag is my favorite movie of all time", followed by "after Apocalypse Now it is the best Vietnam movie ever made" which is a contradiction - if Coming Home in a Body Bag is his favorite movie of all time, but he thinks Apocalypse Now is the best Vietnam movie ever made, then how can Coming Home in a Body Bag be his favorite movie? He clearly prefers Apocalypse Now to Coming Home in a Body Bag. I kind of like how Clarence is just full of shit and Lee just doesn't care, because he's just there to see Doctor Zhivago.

Jason Dolan

Unlike "Natural Born Killers", Tarantino actually approves and likes the way Tony Scott filmed his script True Romance!!!

Joe Lazarus

Here are Brad Pitt Movies Ranked according to Letterboxd users which can serve as a helpful guide in crossing off Brad Pitt movies but almost ALL of them are good (better than a B, or Fresh as the Rotten Tomatoes folk might say) - so you could almost just watch in chronological order starting with Thelma & Louise and going forward from there. https://letterboxd.com/jdolan74/list/actors-brad-pitt-movies-ranked-letterboxd/

Jason Dolan

I got my discord nickname from this movie. I love the Drexyl scene.

Mark M

Fun Fact - the music in this movie is pretty much directly lifted from the score of BADLANDS starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek - this movie is basically a REMAKE of that movie, or as much as THE GIRL NEXT DOOR is a remake of RISKY BUSINESS.

Jason Dolan

Awesome that you did this oneβ€”-one of my favorite things Tarantino ever wrote, and few people film a better looking movie than Tony Scott.

Warren H

White Boy Day!!!!

Steven Montano

Awesome to wake up to! Brad Pitt (Floyd) is great in this lol πŸΏπŸ™ Val Kilmer = Elvis 😎 Other Brad Pitt greats.... Legends of the Fall Meet Joe Black Moneyball SLEEPERS A River Runs Through It Interview with A Vampire
