Rocky V (1990) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Rocky V (1990) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

This one wasn't as bad as many say, but it's still the worst one of the series. Richard Gant (Duke) is a proven good actor when he can get you both heated at him the way you were. Haha He made the movie better than what it would've been. Bring on Rocky Balboa and the Creed series.

Jah (jakwiq) (Jah Quick)

Warrior is, without a doubt, my favourite "sports" movie. Everyone is SO GOOD in it!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Yes, Measure of a Man. Such a beautiful song. My Family has used it for many occasions.

Jonathan Patrick

I don't know if it's been recommended before, but just in case it hasn't, you guys should check out Warrior starring Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy. Kind of a spiritual cousin to these movies (not literally), but it has a really wonderful "Rocky quality" to it. And it's a great movie, so once you guys are done with the Rocky series (including Creed 1 & 2), you should definitely check this one out. I think you'd both really like it.

Gary Giaimo

Sensei Lawrence is still waiting for Daniel and Sam to watch and discuss.

I was in eighth grade when I first saw Rocky V. I went with a bunch of friends and we all loved it. I remember at the time the reason some people didn't like it was because Ricky didn't have a boxing match in the movie and they felt disappointed by that. But I thought, even back then, that it was a great continuation of the story. I thought Talia Shire was great as Adrian and Sage Stallone, Sly's son, was pretty good too. And that's saying something because most kid actors are just terrible. Best of all, the scene where Burgess Meredith came back to play Mickey got me then and it still gets me to this day. The song over the end credits, Measure Of a Man sung by Elton John, has some pretty good lyrics if you give it a listen. I can take or leave the rap music but it was good to have Bill Conti's score back in the film. Part V was directed by John G. Avildsen, who directed the original Rocky (as well as The Karate Kid). It brought Rocky back to the beginning in Philadelphia. It took place in South Philly, where I spent a lot of time as a kid. My parents grew up there and I used to visit my grandparents on 8th and Reed and my aunt and uncle on Bancroft St. all the time. So yeah, the movie is a sentimental favorite of my, sure, but it's also a good film. I place it in fourth place of the original five (above Rocky IV and below I, II and III). I'm glad you guys enjoyed it too.

I Really love this Reaction ... For me is Rocky 5 also very underrated !! The Ending is not good but the Rest is a really emotional movie for me !! After the Rocky series you have to check "Over the Top" from 1987 ... It is already in your List !! Very Emotional Father and Son Movie ... Reminds me a lot of my Childhood ... I Think you will love that movie

Florian Meier

Rocky V has some good ideas, but I don't think the script is very good at all. Even Stallone called Rocky V a mistake. Edit: Oh wow, I didn't know how little you guys know about Rocky Balboa. The reaction is going to be great.

Jeffrey Miller

When Micky is telling Rock in the flashback that if it wasn't for Rock he probably wouldn't be alive, that seeing him doing as well as he's doing gives him a reason to stay alive, is taken word for word from what Cus.D'Amato the famous boxing trainer said in an interview about Mike Tyson who was sitting next to him. Cus adopted the orphan Tyson and was a father to Mike until he died just before Tyson won the heavyweight crown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJtiio9sK8Q

Aaron Barlow

I'm sure glad the studio rejected it. Rocky dying would be one thing that definitely would have made me hate the movie.

Alex

I posted the work print alternate ending scene up above in my thread. I like it more.

Jonathan Patrick

Has anyone ever seen the mythical work print of Rocky V? I understand it exists and it's a much better version of this film. Speaking of, I finally saw the Rocky Vs Ivan version of Rocky 4. I'd honestly love to get a channel reaction for that, after the Creed films. While I enjoyed a lot of what was added (more character for Drago, more Adrian), most of my remaining issues were with what was left. The tonal shift created with the new edit does NOT fit with the montage songs and it's super jarring. Ultimately, it's a way less corny cut of the film and, IMHO, well worth a channel reaction.

Donna Castellano

Rocky Jr. should've joined Cobra Kai. XD

EdmanXERO

Definitely. I think that line that Rocky says when he says "Remember when Mick said when he was fighting sometimes he'd fight so hard that he was thinking that he broke something inside?" that line really hit home. It felt like something Micky would really say because he warned Rocky before fighting Clubber that the beating he took from Apollo should have killed him.

Scott Kerr

Agreed, that's one of the only things I like about this movie and the script. I also think it was a pretty decent plot point to have them lose all of their money and return to the old neighborhood. Almost everything else falls apart for me after that.

Eric Denney

Adrian is so wonderful. I love how she takes everything in, always observing, watching, listening, and when she communicates how she feels she doesn't hold back. We hear so much about "couples goals" these days. Ladies and gentlemen, Rocky and Adrian were couples goals before it was cool.

Jeff Mills

Even though I'm not a fan of this film, there was one scene that I thought was very well put together. The very first scene (which took place in the locker room) when Rocky was shivering after his fight I thought was very well done. It felt so much like a Rocky moment to me. However, I can't say the same for the rest of the movie. I won't judge people for their feelings on this movie though. :) It's cool to still be a Rocky fan, regardless.

Scott Kerr

I've had the time of my life...sorry, had to do it. ;-)

Jeff Mills

When I heard there was a new "Rocky" film coming out in 2006, my first reaction was "Please, no". It had been 16 years since the last film and I kept thinking, "Who's Rocky going to fight in this one? Father Time?" Oh, how wrong I was. I tip my hat to Stallone. He persevered and he concluded the "Rocky" saga with the best film of the franchise since the first movie IMHO.

Jeff Mills

Yeah, I thought the Duke character was a bit cartoonish for me. Very over-the-top. I think it would have been a wiser choice to have him be more serious. Apollo Creed was really modeled after Muhammad Ali and you can see that especially in the first movie, but Carl Weathers brought his own personality and was able to bring that character to life. He made Apollo his own. George Washington Duke is a cartoon and pale imitation of Don King.

I love it when Adrian tells Rocky about how Tommy lacks his heart. So true. You can totally get why Rocky is so excited about training Tommy and living vicariously through this younger fighter, but they're not the same and Tommy doesn't have the heart nor does he appreciate things the way Rocky does. This is why I love the character of Miguel so much in "Cobra Kai". Johnny is teaching him all of these things, but Miguel is teaching him, too. It's similar to "Scent Of A Woman" with Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell. Pacino's character is the mentor who's teaching O'Donnell's character throughout the movie, but it's Charlie who's teaching Colonel Slade, too, and that's one of many things I love about that movie.

Jeff Mills

I am so happy you both enjoyed "Rocky V" in spite of its flaws especially the ending. Originally, Stallone was going to have Rocky die at the end of this movie in the fight. He had written a scene where Rocky dies and he's talking to his family, and Stallone said he was very proud of the scene, but the studio rejected it. Basically they said, "Rocky never dies like James Bond never dies". So he had to write a new ending. I appreciate that Stallone wanted to get Rocky back to his roots and even hired the director from the first movie to come back. I think what was missing from the previous two films was the realism. It felt like Rocky had transformed into a superhero which is cool, but it lost that reality-based story from the first two movies. I think this was Sylvester Stallone's way of bringing it back to the tone of the first two movies. Bringing back Bill Conti as composer was a nice touch, too. And this one didn't have any music video montages although it did have a training montage. Originally, the character of Marie (the teenage girl who told Rocky "Screw you, creepo!" in the first movie) was supposed to come back for this film. They brought back the actress, but her scene got deleted. More on that later.

Jeff Mills

"Listen to Paulie!" - Things TBR never expected to be saying after Rocky 1-4... :-D Also, there's something oddly poetic about watching Rocky V while you're also watching Cobra Kai. They're not at all the same - but somehow they share a lot of the same set-ups/character relationships.

Greg

Finally, next week I’ll watch Rocky Balboa for the first time with you guys! Then I’ll have to pick up the Creed movies. But since you guys are on a Rocky kick, I want to recommend the movie Warrior with Tom Hardy. If you guys haven’t seen it. Another great fighting movie that kind of is more about the plot and characters. It’s just one movie. So easy to bang out.🤙🏻

Jonathon Dragovan

Yeah, a lot of it is really realistic and losing everything can be really hard and I think Rocky really realized that he couldn't fight anymore, and he was really the bigger man when it came to Tommy calling him out, but when he punched Paulie out that was it for him, and that was the moment that Rocky couldn't ignore it anymore and he just destroyed Tommy. But when Tommy said "I ain't you and you ain't Mick," is 100%.. That's the thing in life that we all do sometimes, at least I know I have done over and over in the past and especially in relationships we try to turn people into the ideal person or maybe someone we were once with who we're not with anymore. It can be pretty hard, and you know people like both Mickey and Rocky are rare. I love that Rocky Jr. was able to beat the bully without Rocky's help. I haven't seen this in a very long time. But yeah that's usually what happens when you stand up to a bully. Usually y'all become friends. That's how it was back in the day. But you can't let people walk all over you, and there's gonna be people like that. That's so rare nowadays that people stand up to bullies or even that other people will stand up for other kids. That's the real way you end bullying we gotta make kids stronger so that not only kids stand up for themselves but if kids see another kid getting picked on they stand up for the other kid and tell the kid to leave them alone the way Miguel told Kyler to stop being such an asshole in Cobra Kai. When someone is being a bully somebody needs to put them in their place and tell them to stop being a bully. Btw, that red head in the movie basically an escort that the Duke was using to get in with Tommy. She was only there coz she was paid for. That comment about "her coming cheap" wasn't an insult but the truth. At least that's how I always saw it. She was just doing her job of manipulating Tommy to do what the Duke wanted. I love Daniel's reaction to people who are just really putting obstacles in the way "This woman sucks," hehe.

Alex

Thx so much for the early releases. Sam rules!

Ellie Miller

Tommy Morrison was a legit top heavyweight boxer back in the day before he got AIDs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcjEJ3KKIug

Aaron Barlow

I always felt like part 5 catered to the time period just a little toooo hard. You have George Washington Duke, a pretty clear carbon copy of Don King and his "only in America" over the top, fight promotions involving Mike Tyson. You have the 90s hip hop soundtrack...some tracks were actually good enough to make my gym list, but it's a huge shift from the traditional Bill Conti score. All in all, I've said it before that part V captures a lot of the Rocky spirit that IV kind of sidelined in lieu of montages, synthesizers, and general 80s glory. Glad you both enjoyed it. On to part 6! My personal favorite.

TK Kennon

Loved the reaction , guys!!! I don't get the "hate" this movie gets....sure it's not Rocky's best but many people don't like this movie because it's gritty and depressing, it's real life! You take that many devastating blows to the head, you're going get brain damage. People were expecting another superhuman matchup when this movie came out, nope, just the consequence of his boxing career. Remember what the Russian did to Apollo? How on earth is Rocky supposed to come out unscathed?? Stallone was going for realism; like the health risk in boxing many boxers suffer.. irreversible brain damage. We saw how Rock's personality changed a bit..he got punchy. But he still had heart, and that's what I loved about this movie. Also, this movie showed a more real side of boxing, the business side, with exploitative agents and corrupt business tactics causing fighters to go bankrupt, losing everything which a lot of fighters fall victim to. I also liked the father and son theme. When I first saw this movie and it brought tears to my eyes. It shows how wrapped up we can become when trying to achieve our goals through others and how it affects people around us. I thought it was an interesting storyline and very underrated. It was a lot better than people give it credit for.

Joe Lazarus

Rocky Balboa was fantastic. It goes back to the old Rocky roots. My favs are parts 3 and 4 but thats because of my nostalgia ties to it but i remember seeing the trailer to Rocky 6 and was so hyped!!! You guys will def enjoy it!!!

Demos Samolis

Yes, very sad. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I guess it would be hard in part 5 for Adrian to get behind Rocky fighting Tommy in the ring so they did it another way, hurt Paulie now Rockys fighting for family. I guess I loved the street fight bc at that time when the film came out, I grew up in a really bad tough neighborhood so that street fight felt real and close to home lol so my brothers and I really loved the film at the time and it always stayed with us. We did miss Rocky's training montages but I guess Tommy's winning montages and training took that place now that Rocky changed roles. Btw for TBR, there is an alternate ending/scene to the fight where Rocky does reach out to Tommy and helps him up after the fight. I actually love that alternate scene and you can maybe find it on YouTube. Actually here it is... https://youtu.be/xgLqutnF_qA 3 scenes I was looking forward to y'all reacting to...and you did not disappoint. Mickeys flashback scene...part 5 was worth it just to see that scene alone. It was great to see that and y'all clearly loved that too. Adrian's speech, believe or not I tear up during her speech everytime. She's great. And the end, when he gives the necklace to his son and the movie ends with ”I love almost everybody” . That's so Rocky. ❤️ The ending montage of pictures was bc it was supposed to be the last Rocky film. Bc some didn't like the film, Stallone made another to fix the series, even though I personally loved it. And I think TBR is right that after 3 and 4 people were expecting Rocky vs Drago on the moon lol basically that's what it was. I personally appreciated bringing taking it back to the streets of Philly. Thank you guys. It will be sad when all the Rocky reactions are done lol

Jonathan Patrick

I rewatched Rocky Balboa last night and I can't wait for your reaction to that one. I forgot how good it was.

Donna Castellano

I saw this movie when I was 11, a week before it came out, after winning tickets to an early screening via a local radio station. I remember vividly how excited I was to get to see the new Rocky movie early and how let down i felt leaving the theater. I never watched it again until another another reactor recently picked this film. While not my favorite Rocky film it certainly isn't as bad as 11 year old me remembered. I'd still place it last out of all of the series, but its not unwatchable by any means.

Joseph Tamburo

Just saw you edited your comment with that news, that’s awful! I had no idea -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Excited to hear your thoughts on the reaction! 😏 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

That's the beauty of all movies being subjective. Not everyone is going to like the same movies.

David Crabtree

Having not seen their reaction yet, I think they might really enjoy Rocky 5! I really feel it brings the Rocky character back to its roots, and I think this movie tells a compelling story. But I'm excited to watch this reaction later this evening!

David Crabtree

The only Rocky movie I'll be skipping. There are a few kernels of a good idea for a movie in this script, but that's about it. I'm sure some don't hate it though.

Eric Denney

Can't wait to hear your thought! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Aww!! Enjoy! <3 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha yesss! #SueMeForWhat

TBR Schmitt

Oh, wow -- Sam! I just recently watched ROCKY V on HBO Max for an upcoming live podcast taping... and was a bit jaw-dropped in the huge tonal shift from the prior films. I look forward to what you & TBR have to say 😉

Cody Downs

Yes! Doing both Creed films :) I think our reaction to Rocky V might surprise you all! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Im assuming the reason they are doing 5 is because they intend to do Creed. TBR and Sam were well aware of 5's reputation ever since #1 or 2

Erich Bomke

Down the road, TBR & Samantha will have to do CREED from 2015 🙂

Cody Downs

This AND Dirty Dancing? You guys are spoiling us today!

David Crabtree

Omg...was not expecting this right now...🥊🍿 #hometeam #IdidntHearNoBell ❤ #RockyAdrian Sage Stallone is Stallones real son in real life, he plays his son here in part 5. Sadly he passed away a few years ago when Stallone was promoting The Expendables 2. I remember it was tough for Sly on his press tour.
