2022-04-11 23:52:20 +0000 UTCI wasn't too wild about Midnight Mass to be honest. The pacing and unnecessarily long monologues at times really dragged. There are plenty of highlights though like Samantha Sloyans character Bev Keane. The underlying story is interesting but I got nowhere near as invested in the story and the characters as Hill House and Bly Manor. If I had to score those three shows I'd give Hill House a 9/10, Bly Manor an 8.8/10 and MIdnight Mass a 6.7/10. I'm really looking forward to Flanagans take on "The Fall of the House of Usher" which is based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. I love the classic movie version from 1960 with Vincent Price. Very atmospheric. (and dark). It'll take a while to reach us since it's still in pre-production. :/

2021-12-13 22:03:14 +0000 UTCI do wish they had done a little better casting with the older versions of Owen and Henry, or did something to make it more explicit. I've seen a number of reactors whiff on it completely, or even deny that we're seeing the older versions of the characters, despite the credits labeling them "Older Flora", "Older Miles", etc. "Midnight Mass" is good, but it isn't the same kind of show as the two "Haunting of...". For me, "The Haunting of Hill House" is all about the story, "The Haunting of Bly Manor" is all about the characters and "Midnight Mass" is... just a show exploring the topics it explores while being blessed with a metriic ton of Mike Flanagan's fantastic monologues and some great camera work.
