Highlander (1986) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Highlander (1986) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

LOL guessing the plot of Highlander 3. This series is a mess. Highlander 2 has a theatrical cut and a director's cut and each one gives a different explanation for the immortals origins. Then Hilander 3 takes place in betwen first adn third.

Reed James

This is the reaction that made me a subscriber long ago. Daniel is the only person I've seen react to Connor at the police station when he gives the cop "the stank eye". My parents noticed it when I was a kid. And you're right, it is a psychic power he's using. The original script had a lot more in it, but the movie still has moments that were left in. You're both very observant

ShadowVessel π

Totally! The first episode is a bit weak with a cheesy villain but it gets better as it goes.

Aaron Barlow

An 80s classic. The other great Russell Mulcahy film is The Shadow (1994). Very stylish comic book movie way before they were all the rage.

Odd Thomas

"Mom.......WOOF!!!"

Aaron Barlow

A great Lambert movie is 'Knight moves' a crime thriller.

I'd love to see someone react to Highlander the tv series. Was one of my all time favorite shows around that time and still holds up(as you get into the latter seasons.) The lore and characters make the show

TimTakDoh

You two should definitely watch the Highlander TV show, it's great. It goes more in depth into the lore and you meet quite a few immortals along the way. Also yes, there are female immortals. The hero is a new guy Duncan Macleod (played by Adrian Paul) who is actually the protege of Connor from the Clan MAcleod albeit a couple of generations later. Connor has a couple of cameos during the series. Immortals when they first turn immortal, i.e their first death are found by another immortal who teach them all they need to know about the 'game' as it's called. The teacher immortal has nothing to gain by killing the newborn as they haven't built up any experience/knowledge or taken any heads. Taking another immortal's head lets the victorious immortal absorb the other's knowledge. abilities and power.

I'd never seen this before, but I grew up watching the TV series, so I know all about the Highlander thing. I called out the beginning of the movie and knowing you guys went in knowing nothing I was like I can imagine their reaction to it. lol I had no idea that was Queen I just think of it as the Highlander theme song coz it plays in the intro to the show. I think it's the only TV show where I never fast forwarded through the intro, I always sing along to the lyrics, I especially fondly remember the "Yeah! Yeah!" part .. Had no idea that was Queen. Oh also little known thing. When I first got on IRC on the Internet in '93 I was a member of something called the demoscene, and my handle was Hilander (coz you can only have 9 characters in IRC nicknames).

Alex

I love this movie. I wonder how differently it would play out if watched in chronological order.

Nick of Time

She's stuck on the roof. There's no way for her to come down that quickly. She would have to wait for the water to drain away, then get off the ledge, walk to the stairs or elevator, go down and go inside the warehouse. She would have to do all of this in 3 seconds. The film shows the two men hitting the ground and immediatly cuts to Brenda inside with them, trying to open a locked door. It's impossible for her to be there that quickly.

ED209

I am so in love with this movie, I joined your Patreon just to watch it with you. There were more scenes with Rachel, at least a few. There was just an online con for the TV series, but one panel was all about the movie. Jonathan Melville, writer of "A Kind of Magic: Making the Original Highlander", showed stills, set photos, and talked about lost scenes! When the movie ran in the U.S. they cut OUT the flashback showing how Connor met her! Of all things!!

Jill

They hired him for Highlander based on a look at him, and his role as Tarzan. What they didn't know was that he couldn't speak English, and has myopia so bad he's practically blind.

Jill

I think she was supposed to be coming in the door.

Jill

Sean Connery's character said his age during the movie! xD Well, not his exact age but he did say that he was around for over two thousand years. The way that I interpret the final battle scene with the spirits flying about is much like you both suggested, that he was gathering The Kurgan's soul(s) and collecting them. The way that I see it, is each immortal has a soul and when they kill another immortal by taking their head off their soul is taken along with whatever other souls that immortal had collected in his lifetime. So, in the end when Macleod killed The Kurgan he was effectively collecting the final chunk of immortal power, claiming the prize. I'm saying this here, I do NOT recommend that you watch the sequels to this movie. Some are fun but the story goes through the ringer and it's obvious that they're just looking to make a quick buck. Also, please never watch the tv show. Holy crap, was that awful. xD

Christophe Lambert's first major role was as the lead in Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. A realistic take on the story of Tarzan that was critically acclaimed. In France he followed that up with Subway from Luc Besson (The Fifth Element and Léon: The Professionnal). The Hunted is a really neat samurai and ninja story. Fortress is a prison escape film set in a future dystopia. I also enjoyed his Seven knock-off Resurrection which was directed by Highlander's Russell Mulcahy. His co-star Leland Orser is a really talented actor that usually only gets small roles. He really gets a chance to shine as Lambert's cop buddy.

ED209

The Hunted and Mortal Kombat - both from 1995. Also Fortress from 1993, which takes place in the far off future of 2017.

Chris

I have not! I’m not sure if TBR Schmitt has! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

That’s awesome! If I’d see the Kurgan at 10 I’d be absolutely terrified! Such a good villain -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you!

TBR Schmitt

Have you never seen the original Mortal Kombat movie? The lightning God Raiden was played by Christopher Lambert, the Highlander! I wasn't surprised you didn't mention that in your video

Terry Lee

Haha... After seeing this movie a long while ago... I'd often called back to that scene where The Kurgen jacked that old couple's car and kidnapped the old lady. I would hug my mother and with a deep gravelly voice I'd say, "MOM...!"

Mr. Writhms

Whoever is picking your reactions is doing a great job, I love most of this content, new sub after The Highlander post on YouTube.

Luis Rodriguez

How Christopher Lambert became a movie star I'll never know. But all of his movies are great 80s action goofiness.

Chris

I hadn’t seen this since I was a kid. It was…. fun to rewatch lol. The bad guy and cool shots make up for all the bad stuff like the poorly displayed battle scenes and hammy acting. Just very fun and super unique. Glad you guys got me to watch it again.

PIG

I first watched the TV series with Adrian Paul and saw Highlander movies much later. It all has a lot of nostalgic feeling. The movie has its flaws, but as you said has lots of interesting artistic choices and an iconic villain. Although i liked more that in the series they were actually dying for 5-10 minutes and then getting back alive, not just taking bullets or stabs and still standing.

Connor his Quickning at the end is epic

Anakin Starkiller

Lots of kudos for Queen who were only approached to make one song, but loved the concept and script so much that they made 6 (they also make a partial cover of New York, New York and the film features Hammer to Fall which was from their album The Works). I also have to give a shootout to Michael Kamen's score (composer of Die Hard). It's kinda crazy that a film about an immortal scottish warrior features Sean Connery as an Egyptian masquerading as a Spaniard... who speaks with a scottish accent. While the titular Highlander is played by frenchman Christophe Lambert. The film was a box-office dud in North America but a big hit in Europe (especially France). In that country it was Lambert's third hit in a row. The USA knows him best for Highlander and as Rayden in the 1995 adaptation of Mortal Kombat. He has an extensive career as the star of an infinite list of B-Movies (most of them pretty terrible). The film features probably the only true plot hole I have ever seen. During the climax, Brenda is holding on for dear life on the ledge of the roof, trying not to fall off the building or into the electrified water. Connor and the Kurgan fall through the skylight and hit the ground multiple storeys down. The film then cuts to Brenda inside with them trying to open the door. How in the hell did she get there. She teleported. Be warned that the sequels are universally panned with Highlander 2: The Quickening used as a shorthand for one of the most awful sequels ever made. Highlander was created as one story and everything after that drops the ball. Might be interesting to see you react to that though...

ED209

The sequels….well, the second one’s quality is such that, after reading it, the conditions under which Sean Connery was willing to return were that all of his shots must be completed in two weeks, and he would get 3 million dollars for those two weeks or they could go to hell. Take from that what you will. 😄

Mike Adams

So psyched you guys watched this! It won, like the academy award... for best picture of all time. Joking, sorry, call back to Will Ferrell in Talladega Nights. No but really I loved this movie as a kid and still do, but as an older nerd now, that scene with Heather (my Blossom) passing on while Freddie Mercury sings "Who wants to live forever?" hits very different nowadays lol. Also, Clancy Brown as the scariest punker ever was one of my all time favorite movie villains. To me it stands the test of time if you kinda keep it simple, I didn't really like or follow the sequels, it's a basic good vs evil story with some world building that leaves you wanting to know more, which I love, like another Eighties great, Big Trouble In Little China 😂👍

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Haha aww I love that! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha! Both of your comments are killing me, Justin! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh and by the way I said just at the same time as Samantha I said the fish tank needs a clean! Hahahaha

Andy Farmer

Just such a classic! Still love it after all these years, I first saw it not long after it came out in 1986 - I was 10 and me and my mate next door used to go and rent out 15 and 18 rated films from the local video store who didn`t care what age we were, god we were nuts LOL! Kurgen freaked me out and for years after everything I saw Clancy in he freaked me the smeg out! Plus I love the blend of crazy action, powerful shots and the hugely heavy romantic scenes of which Queen doing the soundtrack just made this so perfect, and still just now watching this the Who Wants To Live Forever playing over Heather`s demise just brings the tears still big time!! You should check our Highlander 2 The Quickening - it has got mixed reviews over the years but I still love it and it`s equally as mental as this first one hahahaa. Thanks again both of you for another groovy reaction.

Andy Farmer

Omg yes awesome choice

Richard Flanagan

LOL my friends and I in the 80s LOVED Highlander (we were 7/8 years old and one house had HBO). Even recognizing it’s many flaws now, I still have a soft spot in my heart. And yes, multiple injuries happened back then as we sword-fought each other with silver-painted broomsticks.

Warren H

1% non-decapitated .?.?.? How does that work? It’s makes me think of the Princess Bride with miracle Max when he says your friend is “mostly dead “.

ADPTBL

TBR had a little too much fun on the Kurgan’s ride through New York. The reaction to the Kurgan’s reveal about Heather in the church was terrible to be sure. You had to pick your jaws up off the floor.
