I actually don't watch a lot of anime but I think the generalized complain Dwayne has here somewhat sinks up to my own. My initial impression of Anime was that it was always unique, creative, and driven by powerful narratives, but that is because the first anime I have saw were things like Hayao Miyazaki and Akira and what-not. To me (just an impression) it seems like a lot of the general stuff has become really, really, really formulaic. Everything has fan service. Everything is about a bunch of 16 year-old kids who have more backstory than a 50 year old character should, poorly defined super powers, the "too cool" protagonist, the hot spring episode, the harem.
Obviously this perception has a lot to do with how jaded I've become, perhaps rather than the anime itself. Stuff still stands out now and again. Attack on Titan; phenomenal. Kill la Kill . . . didn't understand that one because you can't appreciate a parody if you don't know what it's a parody of . . . but people tell me it's brilliant.
