late to the game but i’m cracking tf up at kay getting mad at alex for passing out at the gym and yelling get up. reminded me of when i fell off a rock climbing wall (my first and last time trying to climb) and sprained my ankle and my sister was like “get up!! what are you doing get up?!!”

I agree on such a deep level with K, that while the movie’s theme, is not original, this movie is the first I’ve seen to actually successfully communicate it. To the point that it affected me emotionally in a way that no other movie ever has. I think the main reason for this is that Elizabeth is portrayed as a victim, to both beauty standards, and to Sue, but in the same breath, she is depicted as the perpetrator. She is the one carrying out this process, she is the one doing this to herself. Elizabeth and Sue, are one. Abuser and victim are one. It holds the audience accountable for their desires and habits that they may share with Elizabeth. Like Kay, I left the movie feeling a sense of guilt. I have been just as guilty of hating myself and my body as Elizabeth has. It’s the harsh truth that when you so deeply want to be different or ‘better’ you’re rejecting your current self, you’re making it ‘harder to feel like you matter, like you deserve to live.’ To quote that weird old guy that was also the hot doctor. It’s the best (and maybe most literal) ‘man vs self’ conflict I’ve ever seen in film. The whole movie was just a slap in the face reminding me to be kind to myself as corny as that sounds

2024-10-07 02:58:22 +0000 UTCJust saw "The Substance" today and after it ended everyone just got up and left. There was no conversation, no lolly-gagging, just an intense need to exit the theater. One thing about the movie that kept lighting up something in my mind is how similar it is to the original version of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!" And though the stories are more dissimilar than they are similar, the clarity that was "Remember, you are one. There is no she." was relieving considering how many people have misinterpreted the former work. (Which was clear about the same principle imo! It just got lost in all of the reworks of it.) It's not two different women! It's the same woman. There is just physicality to her intensely negative view of herself, but no one different.

The main character makes stop motion films with her mom and feels completely reliant on her. The movie’s about her destroying herself trying to deviate from her mother’s control. It’s also a mix between the live action reality and the stop motion film that she is creating. It’s definitely for a smaller crowd but i loved it.

It's sad but it's probably the only thing that will mediate what is happening. We can't have nice things, unfortunately. Hoards of entitled people will find a way to ruin it. She deserves peace.

Recently I've been playing more chill games like Tetris while listening to MEATBUS and it's been soooooo much more relaxing than pretending like my entire bloodline is on the line every time I play a video game. Keep the ring on Kay :D

Such a magical experience and YES see it in theaters!!! You cannot wait until it releases on streaming/DVD. You need the sound a theater gives you to fully experience it

The story and messaging is very similar and kinda similar in it's interpretation of the genre of horror. And THE SCORE, again I'm so sad that they didn't hire the guy who did the score for The Neon Demon, but if anyone here likes the music in The Substance, look up Julian Winding. Genius. Also, Cliff Martinez. The two of them were basically the sonic blueprint for this movie. (And it seems that nobody noticed 😭)
