Up today, we have another franchise that time has forgotten...up against a franchise that was VERY of its time:
It's AIRPORT vs THE NAKED GUN.
AIRPORT was a movie that took a bunch of aging Hollywood stars and stuck them on a plane that was about to blow up. For whatever reason, it was nominated for a bunch of Oscars (including Best Picture!) and they made three more of them!
An AIRPORT series consists of:
AIRPORT (1970)
AIRPORT 1975
AIRPORT '77
THE CONCORDE - AIRPORT '79
The massive success of the Airport movies inspired the team of Zucker-Abrams-Zucker to make their 1980 classic spoof comedy AIRPLANE!...which brings us to THE NAKED GUN.
Z-A-Z and AIRPLANE! star Leslie Nielsen teamed up to make another series of spoofs - this time, of crime shows. First with the tv series POLICE SQUAD! and then a trilogy of comedies starring Nielsen, AIRPORT star George Kennedy, and.......OJ Simpson.
The NAKED GUN series is:
THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD (1988)
THE NAKED GUN 2 1/2: THE SMELL OF FEAR (1991)
THE NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT (1994)
So really, it comes down to Academy Award-Winner Helen Hayes vs "The Juice".

When I was a kid in the 80s, the Airplane films were on TV all the time, but the Airport had all but disappeared, leaving this weird hole in the culture around which jokes were made.

2022-03-11 17:14:39 +0000 UTCI used to watch those Naked Gun movies all the time as a kid, and I'm guessing most of the references didn't even make sense to me but I still thought they were hilarious. I've never seen them since I was a child, so would be fun to revisit them.

2022-03-11 17:08:50 +0000 UTCThe airport movies are great. In Airport Dean Martin plays a pilot yet comes across as drunk in every scene and the ending is absolutely bonkers. In Airport 75 Gloria Swanson is in it for some reason, in Airport 77 there is Jimmy Stewart and Christopher Lee, in 1979 The Concorde there is just so much insanity.
