Monza "BP World Record Runs" 1967 - Porsche 906E

For the WSC60s Porsche 906.

A non-racing livery for a racing car, who would've thought?

In 1967, a Porsche 906E, specifically prepared for the attempt, achieved six world records at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy. The car, supported by BP and Firestone, was driven by Swiss drivers Jo Siffert, Dieter Spoerry, future Porsche works manager Rico Steinemann and Charles Vรถgele. The records were set in FIA category A, group 1, class 7.

The 906E was modified with an injection engine and had a shortened front and extended rear for these record runs. The endeavor was organized by BP Switzerland. The cars were also equipped with Firestone tires. These record attempts were crucial for Porsche to gain technical insights and demonstrate the capabilities of the 906E.

Waited so long for this very livery of the Scuderia Tartaruga with their remakable 906 Carrera 6 for their record runs at the "Temple of Speed" of Monza. I will never understand tho, despite my private extended researches as a WSC historian, why they put on that record the "standard" 906 tail instrad of the Langheck they run throughout the whole WSC '67. You can clearly see it from the pointy nose, since they based their racer onto a former LM '66 906 LH. Even tho I never found the true answer, I speculate that it was to make the boxer breath better, since for the record attempts to be archived around the oval, they needed to stay flat-out all the time. That's the only probable explaination, or else, why not stay in the LH configuration in a speed record attempt that would have allowed them to go at over 285 kph instead of 260-265 kph max? In any case, thank you so much! โœŒ๐Ÿป
