Japan saw a large influx of foreign racing cars by the latter half of the 60s, mostly big V8 powered cars like one of six Shelby Cobra Daytona's, Lola T70's, among more sophisticated European roadsters and sports cars. Tadashi Sakai was a big fan of the American way of racing, driving solely V8 powered cars with the exception of a few stints in a Porsche 906 for Taki Racing Organization. Sakai also owned Cobra Daytona Coupé CSX2300, in which he won the All Japan Sports Car Championship in 1966, without any serious competition.

For the 1968 Japan Grand Prix, he was assigned one of 3 T70's entered for Taki Racing Team in hopes of an overall victory. Sadly, despite qualifying a promising 4th on the grid, Sakai dropped out early on with braking issues.
