Mid 20s – mid 30s, African American, Female; Lanky, warmly brown-skinned from East Orange, New Jersey. In the 80s she spoke like a shy ingénue but, with stardom her delivery showed equal parts wit and grace — apparent whenever she took the stage to exercise supreme control of her audiences. Her taxing personal life grew part of her public persona. Yet, the vulnerability of that New Jersey teenager was always just below her haughty facade as she fought to remain one of the greatest recording artists of all time.
