I was 13 when this movie came out and my mom was really into Colin Firth at the time and I'd been in the room when she watched Valmont, which I think is a remake/reimagining of Dangerous Liaisons. I immediately recognized the elements in Cruel Intentions! Mostly, though, I remember the soundtrack. "Bittersweet Symphony" always reminds me of this movie and that particular scene.

So happy you enjoyed this movie (and the soundtrack) Kemi!! Your insight is the one of many things I look forward to with each reaction, and as a fan of this movie, you’ve touched on things I never thought about until now. The lack of parents is wild. And the ones that were present were focused on the wrong things.
I am a huge Sarah Michelle Gellar fan. Although i didn’t see her first foray into a villain role from her soap opera days, this turn as Katherine is fascinating to watch. Going from seeing her as bubbly Buffy to a stone-cold manipulator in Katherine is fascinating to watch and a call to her acting. The twists are jaw-dropping and the end is the cherry on top of it all.
Ryan Phillipe ( Sebastian) was a big heart throb during that time. He and Reese Witherspoon met and fell in love (and eventually married and had kids) filming this movie. She mentions crying a bit after filming their fight scene because she felt so bad slapping him.
Like you said, not the typical fairy tale ending but a bittersweet finale that suited the natural progression of the characters.
Your face during the kissing lesson had me cracking up! That scene, and this movie, had a bit of controversy when it premiered. It had a young cast playing very dark and sexual roles, but they pulled it off well, in my opinion.
My question to the community: how old were you when you first saw this film?

I really try to like this movie but most of the characters are just so unlikable, lol.
