They were ahead of the social times. There is so much symbolism in this movie like Neo (anagram for one). Interesting Fact: Switch (the crew member who wore white leather in the matrix) was originally written as a person who switched genders, being one inside the matrix and the other in the real world. But the movie studios thought that was a bit too much for 1999. Both Wachowski’s have since gone through MtF transitions in more recent years. Another fact: Will Smith was who they wanted to play the role of Neo, but he didn’t understand the script and turned it down. The fact they wanted to cast a black man as Neo had a meaning as well. Not really a spoiler but the Wachowski’s said in an interview that if you pay attention to who is free in Zion, you will notice there is a high (higher than the average US city) proportion of people of color and LGBTQ people. This is because they reject the programming of the matrix more often than not. The second movie has even more symbolic themes like this. For some the spiritual symbolism the Wachowski’s were trying to display in the following two movies were why some lost interest or why some don’t like the next two, especially the third. For me, I love the art of the storytelling, and appreciate it like dissecting a novel for its themes, metaphors and symbolisms. Looking forward to watching the next one. ☺️
