In today’s comic, I offer my own theory behind some white folk’s obsession with touching black folk’s hair. Besides the obvious fetishization of all things ethnic, I would also posit that physical contact with melinated skin or Africanized hair somehow allows them to, momentarily, channel a potent (if somewhat limited) “Black Experience”. The one thing they cannot own. It’s just a theory.
Whatever the case may be, if you like touching black people’s hair, stop it. What you are doing is petting a human being. Petting them as you would an animal. Do I need to remind you that we have a nasty history with being thought of as animals? And yes, comments like “It feels like wool” only confirm the offense.
