... and honestly, I'm relieved! We had a brutal heatwave here and it made it kinda hard to focus on drawing, haha. Not to mention, fall is my favorite season! Here’s a quick review of how this month went for me:
ENVIRONMENTS
This month I jumped back into doing more environments. I usually draw them from reference and think of them as studies, but this time I wanted them to have more of an illustrative, storytelling feel. I feel like that really helped me t...

Hey patrons! Hope you’re having an awesome weekend. Here’s the process video for my ocean speedpaint! It’s real-time, and the total process is about 2.5 hours. If you want to watch it at a faster speed, just click the gear icon and choose the spead you like! As usual, I used mostly the lasso tool and gradient to set up this painting, and then used a hard round brush at the very end to do most of the paintwork. More info about how I use the lasso tool to paint 2020-08-30 13:50:48 +0000 UTC

This one got the most enthusiastic response on my WIPs post earlier this month, so I finally sat down and finished it! Hope you like the end result ~ it was nice to get into underwater imagery again!

Here’s another sketch process video, this time with no white balance issues, but I do dip my head into the frame a few times which caused some focus issues! If you guys have any tips for filming, please let me know, it’s constant trial and error for me haha.
As usual, it’s real-time but you can speed it up with the gear icon if you like! Hope you enjoy!

I filmed the process for the sketches I posted earlier this month and edited them together into a video! It’s filmed in real-time but you can speed it up by clicking the gear icon if you like. Unfortunately the white balance was set to auto which resulted the color constantly changing, which is why I desaturated it! I need to work on making a better, more reliable setup for filming sketches. I hope you still enjoy this video despite those issues! Let me know if you have any questions!

The third in the series in which I travel through my art. This one is inspired by photos of Erawan Falls in Thailand. I love beautiful rivers passing through dense forests, there’s something fairy-tale-like about that! This one was harder to wrap up quickly as there were so many details, but it was lovely to let my mind wander as I painted!

Another travel fantasy piece! Trying to draw these fast, within 2-3 hours, to improve my landscape painting skills. This one is based on the Hardergrat trail in Switzerland. I think this one would be a challenge for me to hike, as I struggle with heights, but it seems so worth it for the majestic view!

Since I’m avoiding travel this year, I will try and travel through my art. Here is a place that I’d love to visit one day! It’s inspired by some photos I saw of the Injidup Natural Spa in Western Australia. I’ve never been to Australia and am fantasizing about going there when this whole covid nightmare is over!

Here it is: the third tutorial I’ve created exclusively for you patrons! This one is about head construction and expressions, and talks about the basic construction, different angles, squash & stretch, and scanning reference images for expressions. I hope you guys enjoy it!
Some stuff I refer to in the video:
• I talk a bit about some principles from my first tutorial on pose construction. If you haven’t seen that yet, watch it here: 2020-08-12 10:46:40 +0000 UTC

The month has almost come to an end! Time to let you guys know how this month has been for me:
PERSONAL LIFE
July was a rough month for me, sadly. Me and Arjen got sick which was kind of scary, but we both tested negative for covid so that was a relief! I had to take a week off to recover though, and soon after that I heard that my mother and stepfather had tested positive for covid. A couple days after that, I lost my grandfather. He was very old and we kne...

I found some time to put together the process of the grapefruit girl! Just in time for the end of the month. My starting point was the drawing I made for my color choices tutorial which you can watch here. I basically just took it from there and painted over it until I liked what I saw! I used procreate on the iPad to do that.
The brushes I used were mostly Maxpacks Gouache:

I took the art that I drew during the color choices tutorial and finalized it on the iPad! I made some screen recordings while painting it so you can see my process, but I just need to assemble them into a video before I can post that. So that’s coming soon! For now, hope you like this one ~ and if you haven’t seen the color choices tutorial yet, definitely 2020-07-30 13:37:03 +0000 UTC

Here’s part 3 of the Q&A videos about the business side of being an artist! Again, some people walk by in the hallway behind me, sorry about that.
In this video I talk about:
• Planning and organizing: particularly about weekly / monthly self-reflection to figure out where you’re at and check the balance between client and personal work.
• Budgeting for fluctuating income
• Maintaining passion for your art.

Here’s part 2 of the Q&A videos about the business side of being an artist! My office is situated right next to the building’s communal kitchen, so my apologies for the weird silhouettes passing by on the left side! I didn’t realize it was in the frame haha.
In this video I talk about:
• Pricing: what factors determine pricing, and managing payment.
• Contracts: whether I use them, negotiating the terms, dealing with unexpected twis...

Hey guys! So I tried to cover like 90% of the topics addressed in the questions you guys posted, which ended in - predictably - some super long videos! I tried to keep the production value really simple, just taking my phone and talking freely. The audio might be a bit off but hopefully it’s manageable to listen to!
I sometimes feel super embarrassed about how I talk when I improvise like this, but I figure it’s just a more honest and open way of talking about these things. My apolo...

I posted a poll earlier today about answering your questions about the business side of art - freelancing, rates, finding clients, etc! Thanks so much to everyone who voted! You guys voted to ask questions in advance, which I will then use to make a video answering the questions. That's the most ideal option for me as well, so that's what I'm gonna do!
Because of that, a request: please post your questions about freelancing and the business side of art in the comments below! If you want...

Hey guys! I haven't been able to draw as much this month because I got sick, I feel kinda bummed about that! Yesterday I posted a detailed walkthrough for my first Horizon Zero Dawn comic cover! I wanted to quickly go through the other two as well, so you could see the same process applied to two different pieces.

The process for cover 2 was quite similar in essence! I’ll show you guys the steps a bit more quickly and briefly so you can see how the same process applies to a different drawing. For this issue, Talanah was on her own, but t...

Hey guys! I’m recovered from my (non-covid) cold, so I’m back at it this week! Thanks for your kind words on my last post! Here are some super quick studies of skies in photoshop, based on reference images taken on my phone. Trying to challenge myself to draw quickly and not get stuck on the details. I want to do more of these and improve my skills with these quick speedpaints. I always find clouds to be difficult, I usually end up over-rendering them! Hope you like these.

Allright guys, here it is: the second tutorial video for you, my lovely patrons! This one is about choosing colors. So for now I made one on colors, or more specifically, using digital color adjustment tools to find colors intuitively. I use photoshop for this but th...
