Here’s part 2 of the process for Ruffle! As I mentioned in the last post, it took about 11 hours total to make and this is the second half. It’s sped up 10 times.
Some things to keep in mind while watching this video:
CHANGING DETAILS AS I GO
What I love about digital painting is that you don’t have to stick to the original sketch when adding detail. You can just wing it and anything that isn’t working, you can change later on. I felt lik...

Here's part 1 of the process for Ruffle! The painting took me about 11 hours in total to make, and this video covers the first half of that process. This video is sped up by 6 times (a bit slower than part 2, so you can get a clearer look at how I set up this painting). In general, for my painting process, I put most of my creative energy into the first hour or so. During this time, I try to build up the composition and colors so that the rest of the process is mostly just finalizing and deta...

I was watching TV with the iPad on my lap, so I decided to do some quick sketches of random heads that came by. Usually the faces I see spark inspiration, but they’re gone by the time I start adding detail, so from that point on I kind of wing it. The final result is a mix between what I saw and my imagination. Hope you like them!

Hey guys! Just a heads up! Last week I posted an overview of the brushes that I use, and a few of them were from the Maxpacks Gouache set. Someone pointed out that he's running a discount until the end of March, so I figure I'd let you guys know!
You can find them here: Maxpacks.art. Use the code WASHHANDS for the dis...

Hey guys! Here's my latest sketchbook tour ~ this one's really different from the other two as it's one of my least finished sketchbooks! Lots of half finished stuff that I never really posted. I talk a lot about how I use a cylinder techinque to flesh out the shapes, use lines to find the planes in the faces, and an embarassing story about powerpuff girls. Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!
And as I said yesterday, thinking of all of you in these crazy times....

Hey guys! I haven’t updated since last week, my apologies for that. I’ve still been creating art and working on this month's sketchbook tour. The content is lined up and ready to go, but emotionally, I was very affected by the pandemic that took hold in the last few weeks. I was keeping a very close eye on the developments, because me and my partner had a trip to New York City coming up (we would have flown out today!) and so I needed to know whether it would be safe to continue that trip...

Here’s the reference images and a step-by-step for the fighting poses I posted last week! To create these sketches, I came up with the character and then searched for some reference poses on DeviantArt stock photos. I used these photos not for the details and proportions, but more as a reference for the energy and gesture of the pose.
In order to keep the character consistent, I constructed the poses using basic shapes - something that I learned from animation school! The more you can...

I got a lot of questions about which brushes I use, so I decided to make a little overview of the ones I like to use most at the moment!
[minor edit: I was using the beta version of max's set with the wrong names, turns out 'gouache b' was actually called 'gouache clean'! updated the text & image.]

Here's some sky studies that I started working on at Vertex in London last weekend! After the event, everyone headed over to a nearby rooftop bar and lots of people had their iPads and sketchbooks out, so I joined in and made a few quick studies. They're based on various photos I took over the course of the last months. I finalized them in photoshop, but I also posted the procreate version so you can see the difference!

Wow, this month flew by! Can’t believe the end is already here ~ but I’m glad because that means spring is coming! Just like last month, a message will be sent out to all Patrons with a google drive link to download this month’s art and videos. Here’s a quick review of how this month went for me:
DIGITAL PAINTING

This is a piece I’ve been working on forever! I created the first sketch in 2018! 😱 I finally sat down to finish it, and went for a more chunky rendering effect so that the character mirrored the solid, thick and chunky feel of the mushroom itself. Still not sure about the BG color, might change it to something warmer! Hope you guys like it ~ have an amazing weekend everyone!

I did some more work on the red & white ribbons painting, here’s the latest version! I’m finding the lasso tool super useful for this process. I select the lighlight or shadow areas and then use a round gradient to add a soft shading effect to the ribbons. This is one of those pieces where I have to struggle hard not to over-render, so I’m trying to set a clear time limit. Wish me luck guys! 😂

My second sketch book tour is finally here! This book covers a lot of big events in my life, so I talk a bit about those things in this video. It’s mostly inktober stuff, so you might recognize a lot of the pages. There’s a lot of little sketches and studies I did for the inktober pieces on the left page, which hopefully gives some insights into how I approach these pieces.
Here are some of the gifs that were referenced in the video, in which I expressed what an emotional roll...

Some of you requested a little step-by-step for my process of drawing the Cheer studies! Here’s a quick walkthrough of the process I used for those. When drawing semi-realistic studies like this, I sometimes fall into a trap of defining the lines too much, which eliminates all the personality of my first sketch. So for this one, I started adding color to the rough sketch and tried to make as few changes to the original costruction as possible. I added the finishing details towards the end. ...

I posted a drawing that I made in 2001 in my socials, mostly for laughs, but then a bunch of people told me to redraw it and honestly, that seemed like a fun idea! Here’s the original:

A couple weeks ago I watched the netflix documentary series Cheer! It was so intense, the way these kids were pushed to their limit and what an extreme sport cheerleading had become over the years. But the main thing that stuck with me were the guys in the team, particularly Jerry. He was such a kind and supportive person, really embodying the values of positivity and kindness. I just loved seeing these guys having fun together, helping eachother out, and motivating themselves to do their ver...

Here’s a little step by step for the process I used to add color to the b&w sketches! I don’t know if this is the most efficient way to reach this end result, because I was just experimenting for the most part. Hopefully it has something useful that you can integrate into your process!
I think the main thing that others can learn from this process is how it shows my piorities when choosing colors! They are:
- Making sure there’s hue variation between the highli...

Here’s the process for my 1000 patrons piece! It’s sped up about 5x, and the total process took about 2.5 hours. I think this drawing is a good example of my ‘fast’ drawing process: moving very quickly from sketch to color and adding details at the very end. This way, I can just wing it and see where the drawing takes me - I don’t have to plan or think too much in the early stages.

Woke up this morning to find that I now have over 1000 patrons!! What an honor 😱 Thanks so much to all of you for supporting me in creating my own art. It feels so good to be able to draw for myself again, sometimes it feels too good to be true and I have to pinch myself. I’m so grateful! Not only do I get to draw more but you guys make me feel like I have a cosy little community to share my art with. Thanks a million ❤️ Process for this one is coming up!

Here’s a remake that I haven’t gotten around to colorizing. Not sure If I will get around to doing that, as the bright red and turquoise color scheme is a difficult one to apply to a b&w sketch. We’ll see!

Here’s another remake I did using the same workflow as my last post! Again, the intent was to update the character to a more current fashion style. The original version contains a high degree of embarassing 2000's era fashion sense :’)

I got sick with a cold, so I spent an obscene amount of time on the couch in the last few days. After 5 episodes of 90 Day Fiance, I was bored as heck so pulled out my iPad and decided to do some quick re-makes of some older drawings! The original drawing is from 2004, and you can see that in the fashion choices :’) I wanted to update the character to a more current fashion style, so I used the original more as a jumping off point, trying to imagine how this person would look and dress now....

This is a character I’ve been drawing forEVER. Since about 2003 or so! I thought it’d be fun to do some quick character sketches of her, to get back into drawing my own characters again. This is the kind of stuff I usually do for clients, but I want to start making it for myself again :)

Here’s a painting that I finally managed to finish! It changed a lot from the WIP version which I posted a few months ago:

I wanted to give her a little more confidence and more of an intentional gesture, so I made a bunch of changes to the pose and expression. The main struggle of this painting was getting the red to work. I'm using this color more and more lately, but I have a love/ha...
