STEP BY STEP // boys of cheer

Some of you requested a little step-by-step for my process of drawing the Cheer studies! Here’s a quick walkthrough of the process I used for those. When drawing semi-realistic studies like this, I sometimes fall into a trap of defining the lines too much, which eliminates all the personality of my first sketch. So for this one, I started adding color to the rough sketch and tried to make as few changes to the original costruction as possible. I added the finishing details towards the end. This process really helps me balance the original loose sketch with the finishing details, without losing too much of either one. I also added large versions of each head. Hope you find it useful!

after ten days of binge watching tutorials I decided to try and paint something and I chose this step by step because it seemed concise and simple to follow, and I wouldn't feel overwhelmed by a lot of instructions. and I think it was the best decision I could have made because it turned out so good I actually wanted to show you! XD no, but seriously I'm in complete awe of you, because in this journey of self-teaching myself digital art I have watched a bunch of tutorials, but you are, without a doubt, the best teacher I ever had.

haha i love thick eyebrows!!

I used macalabs HB pencil brush for the sketch - http://cbr.sh/fg8up?ref=loish and then I just used the hard round brush for the rest - http://cbr.sh/3jq96x i think the solidity comes a lot from blocking in colors and adding some shading! this gives volume through color rather than line!

Love them! What brushes did you use here? how can you make the shapes look solid without doing lineart?

Getting from line-art to color is exactly where I always struggle with my art. Thanks so much for this insight into your process.
