Ella Mai revealed some nifty yoga poses towards the end of our shoot, but all the digital ones showed the vein in the forehead that popped out from being upside down. Still like this one from my Lomo Instant Wide camera though!

Angel Lin was a model I worked with at least 4 times on every LA trip for a few years. This is a compilation of the highlights of those shoots. Explainer video here!

BTS of my daughter Maggie's birthday in July! The highlight for photo dad were these "bunch of balloons" that let me fill up 20 balloons at once with no tying knots.

Another image from my shoot with Devon but showing the fuller environment beyond that shower curtain background.

When I shot with Devon in Portland, I dragged a shower curtain with a neat background up in case I needed it. This was clipped to a tree branch in a wildlife preserve.

Hello patrons! After a major illness with my tonsils in August, things are back to normal and I'm preparing for shoots in October, which is when my tenure as a high school teacher wraps up.
I haven't done any shoots since June and in the interim I've been thinking of new ways to do this stuff; one avenue that really excites me is to follow in the footsteps of my favorite instant film artists of the 1970s, who largely used the magnificent Polaroid SX-70. It was an SLR instant...

McKenzie Eckels in a paper background cone. When I had a studio the paper was donated so we were very destructive back then.

I like some severe cropping in photos, not all the time, but the idea that there's more stuff going on outside of the frame is a good way to get viewers to feel some mystery in your work.

Erika and her boyfriend Alec at our shoot in June. I am not used to having the bf or any "chaperone" around but he was awesome and a big help (holding the reflector and watching our stuff on the beach). Erika just declared her intentions to go full time modeling so if you're in the field of hiring or hosting a model hit her up on her IG @erika_deleijaa

Recent work with Erika De Leija! I should have done more of these but I was paranoid about all the fisherman around us.

I used to own a 4x5 Speedgraphic camera and used it for mainly art nudes. The slowness and tripod requirements of the camera didn't really work for me but I did a series called Dissolved Girl (after a Massive Attack song) which I tell you all about in the explainer video! Models include Carlotta Champagne, Mosh, Glass Olive and others.

These "wubble" balls are things you see in Target all the time, and I bought 2 for this shoot. Then the wind blew them all over the place. We wasted so much time chasing them around.

This was a shoot in Albuquerque that was in a weird rented portrait studio and where my family went off to a zoo while I did this. I felt like nothing ever really gelled - like trying to shoot fashion stuff that I brought from Arizona with a model who was probably past a few years of her interest in shooting.

There's b+w versions and color versions of the same images- one of those rare occurrences where I don't know which I prefer. Explainer video here! Also, a video art piece from this same shoot will be dropping for $10+ patrons tomorrow!

I look back on a lot of these instax and tell you guys about the on-set struggles. Most of the time it's super smooth and everyone's on the same page. This was a unique one- the model kept wanting to instagram during the whole thing, asking me to take pictures of her with her phone, and then texting me repeatedly for images over the following weeks. I've noticed this kind of thing with a few of the younger (19-21 years) models and try to avoid it, or lay out the expectation ahe...

Another from this difficult shoot. I failed to mention in my previous post that I had just got a new camera that I wasn't sure how to operate properly and the fog machine broke. I hate to paint a picture that it was all down to some disconnect between me and the model- there was a lot of bad juju happening.
