Pandemic Comic Archive

I've now done three comics to help people work on "best practice" during the pandemic, and here they are in one useful, permanent, spot.

Remember: DON'T CATCH THE COVID!

Cattywampus

If you've enjoyed Des & Shelley's pandemic comics, you'll love this strip, that I apparently drew (extremely fast) on Friday 15th February 2019 then forgot about. The best thing about it is the name of the strip. If only there had been a second "Cattywampus". I guess, now, there has been.

Process: Giant Days #4 script

Here's the script for Giant Days issue 4. It's the fourth script I ever had to write for another artist, and the first one where, apparently, I bothered to write panel descriptions for all of the panels. Perhaps we'll get into how I got away with that another time. I don't actually know how I got away with it.

My scripts got more detailed from here on out, but if it's 4000 words of script (including descriptions) I've undercooked it, and 5500 means I've overcooked it. This one's ~...

Creating comics for Webtoon 2: reformatting

There are several videos on Youtube where people spend 25 minutes showing you the esoteric way they sliced up their comic to reformat it for Line Webtoon. It makes sense, I suppose, after all (as I established yesterday) there are a million teens waiting for your comics on there. Your fresh new, self-published take on superheroes, perhaps - I don't know. I can only use the tutorials as a basis.

But while this is a seductive notion, it is also wrong-headed. Underpinning the principle of ...

Creating comics for Webtoon and Tapas (for the ageing webcomic artist)

Some hot industry information to help the decrepit cartoonists of the 2000s transition to the new teen world.

Bobbins In Reverse 1

A few years ago I had the idea to train myself to draw with my non-dominant hand, my left, by redrawing every Bobbins strip right from the very beginning. I would run them daily on a website, the worst website of all time, though one hopes it would improve over time. After a couple of dozen I would be starting to be able to control the pencil. After a few hundred days, I'd have a completely new hand to draw with! Think of the savings on wear and tear!

Well, in the end I didn't do this b...

Destroy History sketches x5

When the current Steeple story winds up (in June) I think I'm going to do some more Destroy History strips. Hopefully five a week, a real solid run through the summer. I've reactivated the website - destroyhistory.com  - and might sneak a few strips up while Steeple is still running, just to get into the right mind zone. Here are some of my preparatory sketches.

Weird projects part 2: CODSWALLOP

Once upon a time (October 2018), I decided I wanted to make a Des Fishman wrestling comic. Now, I don't know a lot about modern American wrestling, but I have read "The Wrestling" by Simon Garfield, about the history of British TV wrestling, thus I am an expert and felt that this was a project well within my reach. Well, as it turns out, I never finished it. I wrote and thumbnailed half the script, then decided to do something else. I don't remember what else. I just remember thinking that my...

Run, Spot, Run

A couple of the hi-res spot illos from SGR book 4 (The Retribution Index) were gone when I went to put together the Comixology edition  (should be up in a few weeks), so I had to redraw them. Don’t go to this book looking for visual consistency. There are drawings in there from 2004, 2011, 2017 and 2020. I tried to fake my old style but I couldn't do it so I had to give in and just draw them how I draw now. The whole book is a hodgepodge of styles. Some of it was drawn in ...

Weird projects part 1: SPELL CHECK

I've been very busy over the last couple of years writing scripts, and trying to keep drawing my own comics in between. That is something I've done for so long that when I stop, I don't feel good. At times I would get burned out on trying to write something worth reading when I had put everything I had into Giant Days and By Night scripts. This ended up with me generating non-stories that seemed half good, that I ostensibly had time to draw, but that were ideas-light, if you like. I couldn't ...

Asked and answered.

A number of people have asked me over the last couple of weeks if I have a Patreon so that they can support my work.  Here it is. I don't really have any bonus content to share, I whip myself up and down the street making stuff and it all comes out, pretty much. I think the best use of my efforts right now is in the finished work. I'll try to do some process posts for patrons down the line, or maybe I'll put up some of my Giant Days and By Night scripts.

But I'm grateful (you...
