The Debate That Never Took Place

This video is about a non-event that took place around 15 years ago, and how we're still kind of dealing with that?

Grand Theft Auto V

Okay, December's episode is FINALLY out! Sorry for the delay! This time we're talking about GTAV and where its cynicism brushes up against some of its more impressive elements. As to why the delay: something seems to have gone wrong in the capture in a lot of my footage. The bottom quarter or so of the video would glitch out for a few frames (you can still see this in some of the footage I ended up using, like the man with the guitar on the pier). Unfortunately I didn't notice this until I'...

A 2014 List-y Retrospective-y Thing

Hey all! This month's main video is going to be GTAV, but it turns out that GTAV is a much bigger game than I anticipated so that one's still in the editing room. In the mean time here's this month's short: A look back at some of the games I enjoyed this year. Also it occurs to me I totally forgot to link the short episode from last month here on Patreon, and that's totally done too! You can watch that here: http...

Civilization: Beyond Earth

There's so much I really like about Civilization: Beyond Earth. I dig the return of role playing. I like the sweeping soundtrack that gives the game a sense of scale it doesn't really have. I like the idea of a return to some of Alpha Centauri's core mechanics. And I like revamping the winstates to be more about what's happening on the board rather than behind-the-scenes number crunching like older Civ games. But *so* much of this game is rote. It's cookie cutter Civilization V mechanics w...

Disney Infinity 2.0

Hey all! Sorry again for the delay in getting October's short out; it was just a consequence of real life getting in the way before another weekend could happen. With Thanksgiving this month I should be able to get back on track and deliver the usual two episodes this month! Anyways, Disney Infinity 2.0 is an interesting game. It improves on a *lot* of what made the first one such an abhorrent money sink and useless creative tool. But ultimately it's still a sandbox where the prefabs come f...

Alien Isolation (Spoilers)

Hey all, After a month of short episodes I have returned to the longer format! And maybe overdid it a bit, too - this month's episode clocks in at twenty minutes, which is probably an upper bounds for these sorts of things. Also, I've a bit of bad news - due to some real life issues the short for this month may not be out until this weekend. I'll still work to get it out ASAP, obviously, but it might take the weekend to see it through to the end. Even if it comes out in early November, thou...

Continue?9876543210

And the last video of the month is here. I'm not sure how the "three shorts vs. one big and one small episode" experiment worked out - let me know in the comments! I'd be interested in seeing whether more frequent but less meaty stuff about a wider variety of games is better than rarer, longer videos that have had time to marinate a bit but tend to cover more well-known titles. Anyways, Continue?9876543210 is a game about dying! And also living inside a computer's memory. And thinking about ...

Unrest

Hey all! The second of this month's series of short episodes on smaller games it out! This time I'm talking about Unrest, a game with big ideas made on a small-ish budget.

Glitchhikers

This month I'm trying something a little different - I'm gonna try to cover a few smaller games that I've been meaning to talk about for a while but haven't gotten the chance to. This first episode is about Glitchhikers: A game about late night driving!

SWT: In the Kingdom

Yay, a new short is up! Today I talk about a relatively obscure retro-FPS inspired by DOOM. It's been a frustrating few weeks for just about everyone, and I really needed a positive episode this time. So I picked a game I played a few months back and I really enjoyed. It's buggy and not quite complete, but I sort of adored it anyways. Check it out!

Watch_Dogs

This month's main episode is Watch_Dogs! It's a game about a guy who gets his niece killed an decides to take out his guilt on everyone and everything he encounters for the rest of his life. I think. Anyways, this is one of the snarkier episodes I've done lately, and for that I apologize. But Aiden's *such* a frustrating protagonist...

Inputs and the Rift

For this month's short I managed to borrow a friend's Oculus Rift for a few days and wrote up some thoughts about the giant chasm between that sense of *being there* and *doing things there* that seems to currently exist in VR. Enjoy! Let me know what you think - and as always, thanks for supporting the show!

SWT: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Hey all, This month's short it out! I'm slowly getting the hang of actually making these things 4-6 minutes, and it feels good to finally have the Short Wave Transmission episodes feel genuinely separate from the main shows. Anyways, I hope you enjoy! As always, thanks for supporting the show!

Saints Row IV and Kitsch

The mini episode it out! And (at least in my time zone) with about an hour to spare before the end of the month! Hooray! This video's a bit on the fluffier side, but it was my big takeaway from Saints Row IV and I couldn't figure out how to make it into a full ES episode. I've seen lots of interesting discussion around the game's gender politics and progressive character creator, but not as much about the weirdly positive tone the game has despite being a foul-mouthed, sex-filled, violent game...

Actual Sunlight + Depression Quest (Spoilers)

Hey all! This month's video is up. This time we're comparing and contrasting Depression Quest and Actual Sunlight! Note that there are spoilers for both if you haven't played either. It's a little weird, as episodes go - it's a comparison piece between two very text heavy games, which it turns out do not translate particularly well to the realm of video. I'd love to cover more Twine and text-centric games in the future, though, so if anyone has any suggestions as to how to make video for ...

Assassin's Creed and Emotionally Resonant Mechanics

... For some reason the previous post didn't include the link to the episode, so here it is! I swear I keep trying to make these short form mini-episodes short. They just sort of... get away from me and end up 10 minutes long! Anyways, the mini-episode for this month is up - just in time, too! Hopefully next month will be less by-the-skin-of-my-teeth - I barely got this out before April! Thanks again for helping make the show possible! You guys & gals are the best!
