What is that?

What kind of skull and jaw bone is that? I don't know, I'm just following my reference and trying to make it look cool, so if it looks cool, I'm happy. But you let me know! This is the result of evolution...

Or something like that. This is where the UI design went, not quite minimal as intended and not so far away from a call back either, but a lot more unique and full of character. This makes me very happy as a designer, hitting that middle ground and something that is also easily understandable too. No actually, no you wouldn't. But that's alright because she never will, and the way this game works, you should never notice. So there's a nice easter egg for you to hold on to for the future. But I'm enjoying this design, and the small changes that I'm having to make to have it fit into the 3D space. What do you think?

More UI elements...

Like I said, these UI elements just keep on evolving and as the game evolved as well I went from aiming for a tribute to the classics and wanting something more minimalistic, something that wouldn't take up much room but would be bold and easily understandable. I don't think these quite hit the mark and they were limited by my previous ambitions (the whole call back thing). But even so, I learned a lot and these really pathed the way for the UI elements of the game going forward.

There's more to this than idles though...

This is only a tiny glimpse into the other side of the animations needed for games, and they're called UI animations. And these are a couple initial designs for what the players health and stamina might have looked like, they've evolved tremendously since these were done. But, I still look back at these fondly because they achieved what I was going for, and that was a call back to classics like 'Kingdom Hearts' and games from that period which I personally enjoyed.

A collection of idles?

Yes "idles", not the one's you were thinking of. Here is continued exploration with idle animations, if you're unfamiliar, idle animations are simply looping animations of a resting pose, for example a hanging idle, or a crouch idle, where the character breathes in the same pose or swings gently back and forth in their hanging pose. Early Sprite Test

These are concept sketches for sprite animations. I was looking into the spacing, the way the animations would flow and trying to get that into as few frames as possible while maintaining a high animation quality. Of course this being the first iteration, working towards a 2D side scroll game. I learned a lot from this process and some of these same lessons are still being drilled in today.

LTF series - That was interesting right?

Storyboarding is being done!

I couldn't resist showing you guys some of the storyboards I've been putting together recently. These are shots taken from the first episode (or pilot; they're one in the same) so you can get a little idea as to what I'm working with. Anyway!!! Once a Narrative experience...

That's right, this was first planned to be a narrative, story driven experience. And to some extent, it still will be depending on how close you're willing to look. But here, we see some shots from a storyboard for a scene set early on in the game; which would have been broken up by gameplay, but I also wanted it to be able to seamlessly fit together like a movie too.

2022 Redraw! The sequel!!

Here's another illustration I did based on a piece from 2012, that I redrew in 2017 and have now done again! Yada yada, you know the spiel; artists, again I recommend doing this if you feel a bit stuck or to get you out of a rut.

This is a greater representation of what he'll actually look like. And personally I think Judit absolutely nailed this design!! Incredible, however, I'm interested to know what you think? You still liking the look of Noah? Why is he tearing up? Why do I always ask so many questions!!? Don't answer that last one. I hope you're enjoying the process though.

Another character exploration and another set of lessons learned. Unfortunately this and the others was created before the characters had been fleshed out and thus these animation don't quite suit them anymore, to some extent, but mainly because of the same reasons I've stated previously, experience and quality.

Real Love update - 23/05/22

Injured but still in good spirits!
