Battle Axe Badge Edition Compo.

Hey folks!

Time for a small Patreon competition. The prize being a PS4 copy of Battle Axe BADGE EDITION (I was going to give away the Switch one too, but Octavius stole it).

This being Patreon, I can't run a random competition, as it's classed as gambling, SO, Instead, please drop an alternative title for Battle Axe below. I'll pick my favourite and then I'll send this out to you.

Open until 12pm GMT, 14 May 2021.

Thanks!

Battle Axe

Evening folks!

I've been waiting to play this game for a while. Mainly as it claims to combine the fantastical worlds of Golden Axe, in a Gauntlet like environment.

So, here's my look at physical stuff, and a review of the game.

kkrieger

I thought we could take a journey back to the early 00's demoscene and the work of a group known as Farbrausch. They've created a lot of incredible intros and visualisations, but I find kkrieger, a 3D FPS that fits into just 96KB the most intriguing.

So I did some digging, spoke to some of the members and found out just how they did it.

I hope it whisks you away for half an hour.

How VHS Gaming Conned us

It was bound to happen eventually. I couldn't get away with it forever. VHS Gaming. It was inevitable. So I thought I'd dive in with the key question: How it conned us, and what I mean by that is, how it convinced us that it was something worth dabbling with in the first place.

Personally, having gulped an exceptionally large dose in one go, I don't want to play another VHS based game for a several months, possibly years.

The Renault 19 Story

Last month, I had the opportunity to purchase a car from 1990, a Renault 19 TSE. It's a car model that has a lot of nostalgia for me, and indeed I've been was fascinated by them since the 80s. So it seemed the perfect opportunity to make a video about it. Little did I know that it would turn out to be almost an hour long.

This isn't just on a whim. I've been hankering to make a car video for ages, and now it's complete, I'm pleased I've done it. I have no idea how well it's going to go ...

Johnny Castaway

Ok, it's time to explore the most intriguing Screensaver of all time, Johnny Castaway.

I enjoyed making this one, as Johnny was a frequent guest on my PC screen in the 90s. I spent days trying to work out what was going on, what story there was, and how the whole thing would end. So I thought it was about time to find out.

I hope you enjoy.

ThrowBack FPS Games

This video was a true rabbit hole. I first thought there were a few throwback style FPS games. Then I thought there were quite a few.

THERE ARE TOO MANY.

Anyway, I try and discuss them all in this video.

Membership packs

The next batch membership packs are ready to go (albeit for a few customs forms now required for the EU). So these should start hitting doormats by the start of next week.

I've received messages from a few of you regarding missing items. So please ensure your addresses are accurate (in Patreon) and drop me a message if you have anything outstanding.

This GameBoy Game is 21 Years Late

So, my friend Quang (you may know him, or remember him from a couple of my videos) has recently released Super JetPak DX on the GameBoy; a game that was originally created back in 1999.

This video takes a look at the game, as well as the story behind it's delay.

If you want to grab a copy of the game in the next batch, you can do so at http://nnerd.es/sjpdx

I got a PS5 for Christmas

Happy New Year folks! I hope you had an excellent festive period.

I had decided to take a break over Christmas and New Year, but then I got ill and so the break turned into an extended recovery. But it's now 2021, and it's time for some new videos.

I wanted to start this year off with a fun, light video, but it actually turned more interesting the more I got into it.

This is the story of my Christmas PS5. It's also a story about the "origins of the PS5" design.

It's 25 days into a period of time we refer to as December

Hey folks,

Just wanted to drop a quick note to say Happy Christmas and thank you for your support this year! It means the world and I'm truly glad you're here.

I'm sure some of you are doing the same, but I'm taking this opportunity to take a small break. The past year has burnt me out a bit, and I want to realign the channel and make sure I'm headed in the right direction.

Nothing major, I just want to get back to roots. I want to get back to making more system storie...

But if I don't see you in the mean time, I hope you enjoy this and I hope you have a splendid Christmas period.

Have AtGames Been Trolling us?

Because this Legends Ultimate arcade cabinet isn't half bad.

You can tell that, because I made a half hour video about something that I thought would be a quick video to roll off.

This is a frequent mistake I make.

I haven't even had a chance to properly check for errors. STANDARD.

This Laptop Could Save Your Life

That's not just a "baity" title either. This little Epson ActioNote was actually used to administer drugs, and it comes with all the kit.

Interesting enough, but can it run Doom? That's what I really wanted to know.

As a side note, this video has taken far longer than I wanted it to, and getting this thing to boot from a new drive, when it doesn't have a floppy, was a pain in the arrrrsee, to be frank.

That's old technology for you.

Why do we like this stuff agai...

The Mega 65

So then folks, the Mega 65 is here, in dev kit form at least. The modern day recreation of the Commodore 65, with added features and POWER.

Other than being stunning to look at, it's got a lot of interesting abilities, so in this video I'm just going to provide an overview of what it can do, and what potential it has.

I hope you enjoy.

It's Banner Printing Time

So, I thought I'd grab myself a brand new dot matrix printer, by Epson, and put it through some paces. Namely by printing off a whopping banner.

That's it. That's the video.

Gaming Watches

Hello folks. Sorry to keep you so long, but may I present a new video regarding the curious history and world of game wrist watches.

I'll be back again imminently with another video. Because that's how I seem to work at the moment.

Microsoft was terrified by Linux

Ok, so I've managed to just about get a Halloween video completed on time. Although this cut might be a little rough around the edges. Please do mention anything you find out of sorts.

Although it's about the Halloween Documents, the subject matter isn't really seasonal, apart from the timing of said documents. Still, the sheer terror displayed by Microsoft regarding Linux is clear throughout these leaked memos and messages, so please, join me.

I hope you stay safe over the weeken...

Right folks.

Here we are.

A video I thought would make a nice filler, and it took 2 weeks to edit down into something coherent. There was about 5 hours of footage.

The office is still an absolute shambles.

Thanks to anyone who sent something in!

The Troubled Origins of ZIP

Ahhh, the ZIP file. So widely accepted. So well used.

But how, and why did this compression format win the file format war?

Delve within.

On a personal note. I've always been fascinated by PKWARE. During the 90s, it was very likely to be the tool I used more than any other. Compressing files across multiple floppy disks. Copying my mate's version of DOOM onto several floppy disks. I lived and breathed PKZIP. So it feels right to explore it.

The AARD Code

There was once some code built into Windows that would check if you were running on a competitor operating system, and if so, "crash" itself. Or at least, make you think there was a serious problem.

This is the story about the AARD Code.

It's also the third video I've put out this week.

Now I rest (for a few minutes at least)

Did Microsoft Steal DoubleSpace?

The whole MS-DOS DoubleSpace/DriveSpace thing. It's been on my mind for years. Probably far too many years to be healthy. But I guess that's kinda why I make these videos.

Why did we have DoubleSpace in DOS 6.0, but then DriveSpace in DOS 6.22?

What happened? Why was there a legal case? Are Microsoft criminals (that's probably a more in depth story for another lifetime).

Anyway, here's the video on all that.

Quick video about 1/4 Polybius cabinets

Evening all,

I've known the guys at Numskull for a while, so I said I'd help them try and get their quarter size cabinet Kickstarter over the final hurdle.

This is that video; just a quick look at the cabinets with some background info.

Main video should also be up later tonight!

Virus Hoaxes of the Early Internet

Evening folks,

I hope all is well.

The past week or so, I've been doing a bit of digging about viruses hoaxes of the early internet. I thought I'd explore a bit of virus hoax history before storming into some examples we witnessed during the 90s.

I hope you enjoy!

Intel made an IMAX Feature Film in 1994

It's time. Time to watch this potential abomination of a film, created by Intel in 1994, and part of their education remit. You may recall me mentioning it when I looked at their 'chip kit' a few months back.

The film focuses on Jimmy, who's trying to get his homework on Microprocessors completed. From there it goes off on a 'slight' tangent.

Join me in this festival of microchip related horror.

Hidden Code...

Hey folks,

so here's a video which felt like it took an eternity. I decided to take a week away from editing at the start of the month, but then came back to this, which turned from a small video, into a half hour monster.

Most of the time was spent pissing around with converting vinyl code to digital, which wasn't fun, at all.

But, hopefully this finished result is of interest.

BTW, I haven't got the links together that I talk about in the video yet, but I'll po...
