This will make more sense once the next proper video comes out, but I thought you'd all get a kick out of it. This is a 3.5 minute video on a dumb little gadget I had... which I shot and edited entirely on Betacam SP, using an early-90s linear editing rig. Three guesses what the next video is about. Keep your stick on the ice!

Hey everyone, Happy New Year. I had some cool fantasies about having a new main channel video out in time for New Year's Day, would have been neat if that worked out but it didn't, that video ended up requiring a bunch more research, will hopefully be soon.
However, I did get a fun new computer that I felt deserved to be documented before potentially getting scattered to the four winds, and was so motivated by the end of that process that I actually decided to try to fix it up, and mad...

Haven't decided on an actual name for this video yet, it was kind of a "i have these two things that are in some way connected; how can i find a common Topic" project that worked better than I expected. I had a bunch of misgivings but I think the final product is a decent watch.
I should mention that this is definitely not finished, I found a bunch of mis...

Originally when I wrote the video about the BP6 it was going to end up being like an hour and 45 minutes long because I was going to segue into a highly in-depth history of Intel from 1993 to 1999, covering the whole phenomenon of the Pentium pro, Pentium 2, Celeron, etc.
Fortunately I had the foresight to recognize that there were some issues and unanswered questions in that back half, and went back in and rerecorded the BP6 segment on it's own; this made it much better, since it actu...

just in case anyone else runs into this situation and is anxious about getting a five-digit bill over it: i now have a new quote for $7700 to get rid of the tree. this is much closer to the median price i saw on google and completely reasonable considering it's a pretty big tree, and esp. since they'll let me do the job in two halves. it seems we were right in assuming that the astronomical price we got before was due to it being an "emergency" removal.
in other news, both...

I have the feeling it'll be a while before I get another video out and I figured I'd just let everyone know what's going on. Things have been tough for various reasons, and then I had a huge additional pile of stress literally dumped on me a few days ago.
Seattle's recent not-a-hurricane brought down a tree branch in my yard. Nobody's hurt, but one of my neighbors cars was destroyed, the other severely damaged, my shed got trashed, and the tree (which is huge and already in bad health f...

I doubt I need to justify anything but just so nobody's confused, I am going to release the latest video publicly as soon as I'm home, because early access etc is not as important as giving people something to distract themselves with today, even if it's late.

After confirming that I was able to produce a quick video in the warehouse, I wanted to go back and see if I could make something a bit more involved, while still not getting too carried away. I think I succeeded.
A really interesting thing about the way this new space works is that it's really easy to shoot without a script (I just have a crib sheet) because when I inevitably lose track of what I have and ha...

Hey folks, I made a somewhat cleaner video to announce the studio expansion for public consumption. There's nothing in it that you haven't seen already, and I'm gonna release it publicly tomorrow morning, but I figured that's no reason not to post it here - it's not like I exactly flood your inboxes on a normal week.
Also, this is the first time (I think) that we've used the Flycam, sort of a super-low-rent steadicam (my real one is missing pieces) that doesn't provide any stabiization,...

As soon as I got into the new warehouse I realized it could be good for ad hoc videos, so I decided to give that a shot. The result was a lot better than I expected and I hope you feel the same.
I do need to improve the lighting, get a better mic setup, a better monitor for my camera rig, and many other things, but it's a solid start.

TL;DR: I have rented a second piece of office space and I am very much hoping it will help improve the quality of my videos. in order to explain this, I spent 25 minutes complaining and showing off bits and pieces of my collection.
two things I forgot to mention: the new space is 15 degrees cooler than the other one at all times, so NEXT summer, instead of doing a bunch of crappy videos from home, I hope to do a bunch of so-so videos from the 'warehouse.'
also, i think i mentioned...

I think a few different people asked for this so I figured I might as well share it - this is the roughcut of the Microsoft Response Point video I mentioned in my last post. It's missing a ton of on screen graphics, but nothing that really hurts the narrative (you can fill it in with your imagination easily) and it's not like the narrative doesn't have bigger problems anyway.
This is an hour and 45 minutes long and is absolutely not part of the Cathode Ray Dude Meta. If I knew how ...

A lot of creators have a general purpose update every month; I don't feel like that makes sense for me, but once in a while I feel like I should just let you all know what's going on.
The studio is finally tolerable again. I've shot two videos in... moderate heat. Unfortunately, for complicated reasons, I can't release either of them.
I actually shot one of them well over a month ago. It's a thorough investigation of the Microsoft Response Point PBX; I've had that "i...

Shot in the dark but I figured I should put up something about this because otherwise I have no idea where to even begin fixing it. Not much of a video, but I gotta cast a pretty big net if I'm gonna find anyone who can help me out with this godforsaken thing.
New studio video probably next week if no disasters happen.

This is one of those cases where I saw the thing on the shelf at the store, and by the next day I had a video shot because it was just so compelling. I was going to give it the "cute but incredibly bad and pointless" medal but it actually deserves much better. This thing is just... good, actually.

Relief at last. I've been having a really tough time making progress on anything - the summer refuses to leave and the studio remains incredibly hot, so I only managed to get in there on an unseasonably cool day (which was still sweltering, just tolerable) last week, and it'll be probably another 4-5 days before I can turn that into a finished video... and suddenly I looked up and it had been over two weeks since I released anything. So, here's a little guy who's not so little, but definitely...

No idea how I'm going to come up with a clever name for this one. I decided I really needed to do something approaching a short subject, so here's something only barely remarkable. I like the thing, but it's just one of those things that's exactly the thing that it appears to be.

This video changed a lot from how it started. I bought the machine solely to get a minorly interesting piece of hardware; then I found out the hard drive was intact; then I tried to demo it for it's intended purpose only to find out that none of that functionality still worked; then I reshot the whole thing because I didn't like the pacing, only to find out that some of the functionality resurrected itself. In the end, this turned out to be the most interesting machine in the entire series to...

Okay, this one's episode 8.
This video didn't turn out to be what I hoped; spoilers, but I never do get the thing running, it's just too trashed I think. I'm tempted to pull that VIA and try it in another board, but only if I happen to wind up with a spare 370 board I'm not afraid of damaging, which... well, at this point in time, doesn't se...

No, you didn't miss episode 8; I produce these in weird orders, for various reasons - in this case, because my last public video was over an hour and a half long and I don't want to release another video that length right after, so I shot and edited this one, then shot another that's a bit shorter which will become episode 8; I'll pr...
