I'm on fire today! It's really hot. 98% humidity and billion degrees outside so hot.

USS Columbia-class Update

Patreon Exclusive:

Source: https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-23-106292

I've been diving into the construction of the new SSBN called 'Columbia-class.' Alarmingly, Electric Boat has over promised a rushed construction schedule using a Monte Carlo project management method with data that is unverified because this is the first of a kind construction.

Monte Carlo uses Triangle diffusion model that...

Zumwalt class Ship Brief

Correction Zumwalt destroyers were built in Bath, Maine. Not the Gulf coast.

The Zumwalt-class destroyer is a class of advanced, multi-mission stealth ships designed for the U.S. Navy. Here are some key features and characteristics:

  • Stealth Design: The Zumwalt-class destroyers have a unique, angular design aimed at minimizing radar cross-section, making them less detectable by enemy radar systems.

Welcome to June!

Please put this month's Q&A questions here. I'll be referencing this comment section during the recording.

This month we have two great lectures coming up: USS Zumwalt class (tomorrow) and USS Ohio class SSBN submarine that I had to get special permission to publish.

I have formally requested a 'Hard Hat' guided tour of the Fincantieri Marinette Marine facility in Wisconsin. No response yet from their media office. I'll keep you i...

Major Correction: Abyssal Explorer goes to Titanic

Sometimes I get things wrong... here's the correction: Mr. Larry Connor (The Connor Group) is taking Triton 4000/2 'Abyssal Explorer' to the Titanic wreck, not 'Limiting Factor'.

I'm going to go scream in a dark room for a minute.

Have a good weekend.

USS Scorpion Expedition Costs

$5 million minimum.

I've been working on a cost estimate and proposal to pitch an expedition to USS Scorpion wreck site. It's going to be about $5 million and will likely go over budget because I've never organized anything like this before.

Q&A May 2024

AUKUS Pillar II bill comes in 5x higher for Australia than the public was told last year.

UK can't build NEXGENSUB for Australia (for now)

US can't build more than 1.3 Virginia SSN per year

It's a mess... but there is a solution.   (AUKUS Pillar II report to Congress)

USS Carney Comes Home!

USS Carney was the first US warship to respond to Houthi attacks on civilian ships in the Gulf of Aden. She operated in the Red Sea as well as performing multiple escort and strike missions. USS Carney demonstrated US Navy doctrine and systems in an active conflict zone with no losses onboard.

I am very proud of their performance. USS Carney confirmed everything we have been replicating in the simulator. Our systems work, the training is on point and every one of these sailors are warfi...

China's New Aircraft Carrier Goes to Sea(trials)

  • The Type003 Fujian completed 8 days of sea trials on May 8th.

  • A major limitation of this platform is its conventional powertrain pushing 80K tons around. It burns an enormous amount of fuel every hour severely limiting it's endurance.

  • The Fujian features a “catapult assisted take-off but arrested recovery” (CATOBAR) launch system that will enable it to launch heavier and larger fixed-wing aircraft. China’s first two aircraft carriers r...

May is all about the Littoral Combat Ships!

Tayfun and I go deep, very deep into both the Freedom class and Independence class LCS program. While plagued with mismanagement, unrealistic performance expectation and straight up industrial greed, the core mission of the Littoral Combat is served on both platforms. Why are there two radically different approaches to the LCS? This month, you will find out.

There will be two lectures. First the Freedom class due out this week and then the Independence class later this month.
