Comic Trivia #26

Cross-hatching is a technique of creating graded shading.  It can be used to convey dark mood. The challenge lies in maintaining line consistency -- distance between each stroke and their thickness. Sometimes I do it manually...but cross-hatching brush produces much better results.

Yes, it was all a bad dream.

This page took much longer to sketch & ink for some reason.  One of those days when I feel like I have forgotten how to draw :/

Comic Trivia #25

Colour can be used to focus reader's eye on the important elements of the story.

Traditionally a colour wheel is split between warm and cool colours:

Cool colours (also called "passive") don't draw our attention;  warm colours  (known as "active") on the other hand  help to highlight important parts -- like red!

Comic Trivia #24

Those black lines under Tempest's chin are known as the feathering. It's main purpose is to soften black edges an  graduate values from light to dark - plus add some volume to the subject.

(I'm away from home this week, so the schedule is slightly different).

Comic Trivia #23

An image is visually divided into planes: 1. foreground 2. middle-ground 3. background

The planes are then separated from each other using saturation, brigthness, choice of colour and level of details.

To bring Thistle (2) into focus I have made Tempest (1) darker, less detailed - and the background (3) lighter and  less saturated.

Changing the outline colours & adding more details! Next step is going to be adding shadows and finally some soft light before making final touches.

Comic Trivia #22

Focal point is the element of each panel that  attracts the viewer’s eyes first -- very often it's head, hand or eye.

Placing FP is yet another way to gently guide the reader thrughout the page. On the page below I have tried to keep FP - and thus reader's attention -  away of the page bounds until the very last panel. I also made sure that the focal points in adjacent panels are not too close to each...

New Patreon Rewards Coming Soon

I have run a quick poll on DA to see what *additional* rewards would lure more people here. The results are in and they confirm what I pretty much wanted to do:  BONUS art (for $3) and perhaps Patreon-only VLOG for all Patrons.

As for NSFW I was actually tempted to draw something risqué for a while now (again, Patreon only), but I'm aware that my ideas of NSFW can be at odds with what people actually expect. We'll see.

I would love to know your o...

Comic Trivia #21

When we look at distant objects, they became increasingly purple or blue-ish and brighter due to dust and vapor particles causeing the light to scatter. This effect is known as  atmospheric perspective:

Using atmospheric perspectivein comic helps to  create the illusion of depth:

Aaaand I'm back! Ready to start 2020 with a new inked page.

Hope you had fun yesterday. My idea of fun is staying at home ;-) Anyway, in Scotland the last day of the year is known as "Hogmanay" and traditionally people sing Auld Long Syne. So here you go:

For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Finally my last concept for IDW is Fluttershy and Zephyr Breeze. I wanted to include one cover that would be "neutral" (the previous two include rare/future characters ) -- and this one is also editor's favourite.

The last transition is called non-sequitur and  provides no logical connection between panels. Here's an example borrowed from McCloud:
