Happy Halloween!

I don't know if this is a trick or a treat, but I inked an old drawing I found from last year.

From The Vault #4

Hello, everyone! It's been a little while since I've posted a "From The Vault" piece, but I stumbled across this old image yesterday and thought it would be fun to re-share. This was a commission from 2015, in which the client requested I recreate the famous Jim Lee illustration from "Batman: Hush" in which Batman and Catwoman kiss. I had a lot of fun with it, and am still pretty proud of it. I hope you enjoy it, too!

Behind The Scenes, pt. 3.1 - Thumbnails, cont.

Apologies for the delay, everyone. Trying to nail down how to explain thumbnails is a lot trickier than I thought, since for me it tends to involve a lot of concurrent trains of though, and it's quite hard to figure out which one is arriving at the station first, so to speak. The reason I've taken the route to describe my process is as follows:

Step 1: Design panels as thumbnails.

Step 2: Try to make a coherent page layout with using panels created in Step 1. If there are logistical issu...

Behind The Scenes, pt. 3.0 - Thumbnails

Good afternoon, everyone! First, I'd like to apologize. I meant to post this yesterday, but got carried away working on a commission and completely lost track of time. Sorry!

Secondly, Patreon isn't great about adding multiple photos to a single post, so I think I'll need to split this one up over a few days to go as in-depth as I feel is required for you all to understand exactly what I'm doing.

Finally, before we go any further, I think it's important to get some terminology out of the...

Behind The Scenes, Pt. 2 - Scripting

Good evening, everyone! Today I'm continuing my Behind-The-Scenes look at how a JL8 strip comes together. Yesterday, I discussed story conception and outlining. In this update, I'll be discussing how I take that story outline and break it down into individual scripts.

Generally what I do is I look at my outline and try to break it up into "beats," with each "beat" being a micro-story that would make for a strip that makes sense on its own. Granted, as the stories become more and more involved,...

Behind The Scenes, Pt. 1 - Plotting

Good afternoon, everyone! As some of you may know, I'm taking this month off from producing JL8 while I attend conventions (FanExpo down, Salt Lake Comic Con and MegaCon Tampa to go) and get caught up on some commission work. However, I thought that that would give me a neat opportunity to do something of a deep-dive on how JL8 comes together. This will be the first part of a multi-part series posted throughout this week in which I try to explain exactly how JL8 makes its way from my head to you...

Escape THIS!

I decided to color that Big Barda + Mister Miracle commission I posted a while back, and thought I'd share. I also decided that it would be cool to offer as a print, so if that would interest you at all, feel free to visit this link to purchase! Remember, if you're part of the $20+ tiers, you get a copy for free!

Kirby 100

Some of you may notice a "Kirby 100" thing floating around today on social media. For those unaware, today would have been Jack Kirby's 100th birthday, and as such, many creators are taking the moment to celebrate what Kirby's art/work/legacy means to them.

I'll be the first to admit that I have nothing new to say about Kirby, and what I do have to say has been said more eloquently by people better than I. However, I will reiterate that for those who've never taken the time to familiarize them...

Sketchbook Sunday #4

Good evening, everyone! Here's a little doodle I did a bit earlier in the week while listening to the long-awaited self-titled debut EP of Alice Glass.

For those unfamiliar, Alice Glass was the lead vocalist of the electronic duo Crystal Castles, but left the band after some...rather serious business that I don't know nearly enough about to really get into on my own. BUT! She's bounced back and put out her first solo record, and I personally really dig it. If you like dark, glitchy, aggressive...

Comics Update

Hello, everyone! Just wanted to post a bit of an update real quick. There won't be a new comic post this week because the update sort of ballooned into two, two and a half pages. They'll definitely be ready before I leave for FanExpo next Wednesday, though. I really appreciate your patience! Thanks so much!

FanExpo Canada 2017

Hello, everyone! I just wanted to take a moment to promote my upcoming appearance at FanExpo Canada in Toronto, ON next weekend. I'm really looking forward to it, especially since I don't make it to Canada very regularly, so I hope some of you will be able to make it out to say hello!

Sketchbook Sunday #3

I know it's not actually Sunday anymore, but y'know.

So I've recently been re-reading one of my favorite comics, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane (seriously, it's so great), and was thinking about how MJ gets portrayed these days.

For a long time now--even as early as the initial Raimi film--it occurred to me that MJ has frequently been recast essentially as Gwen Stacy but with Mary Jane's name. I love Gwen, and I love MJ, but they are not at all interchangeable. While Gwen is the sweet, intel...

Now, to be fair, this isn't something I did in my sketchbook, but it IS a behind-the-scenes/process thing, which is kind of what "Sketchbook" posts are meant to be. Here we have the pencils and inks of the first panel of JL8 #251. I was pretty happy with how the panel turned out in both stages, so thought I'd share. Also, here's a list of materials, for those curious:

  • Prismacolor Col-Erase blue pencil
  • Winsor & Newton Series 7 No. 2 brush
  • Higgins Black Magic ink
  • ...

As some of you may know, since I was fairly vocal about it, I recently read through the Harry Potter series for the first time (I had seen the movies as they came out, to answer a question I get a lot when discussing this). Without gushing too much about how much I enjoyed the series, it was definitely enough to fill me with an uncontrollable urge to put pen to paper and scribble out some doodles of Harry himself. I hope you all enjoy these little drawings as much as I had producing them!

From The Vault Friday #3

This is a little bit of a different "FTVF" update, in that it's a commission I just finished but wanted to share, so I guess this is more of a "Before It Goes Into  The Vault Friday," lol.

This was done for a client for HeroesCon, but I wasn't able to get it done in time, and finally managed to finish it. I hope you all dig it!
