The Two Captains

Túrin Turambar and Beleg Cúthalion, relaxing at camp in between purging Beleriand of Orcs. Commission for our good Floss. The colour scheme makes me really happy! I've never done anything like it. ~26x35 cm, watercolours on Canson Vidalon paper. No mini dragons were harmed in forging the Dragon-helm of Dór-Lomin. :D

Seasonal Thranduils

Rough concept sketch for postures and greenery for "Seasonal Thranduils" series - the idea of our very own Isabella, for whom they'll be made. I love the idea and did some sketches for spring (cherry boughs & pansies), summer (sunflower, barley and bluebottle) and winter (black wreathed boughs, red berries, ivy). Autumn you already know. ^^

Next wip

Okay, no movies, but may I spoil you with wips? Some foreground work. Probably some three or four hours left on this one. I hope I can snatch them over the next week, but there's dentist, exam marking, my parents visiting, and conferences in the way. Next weekend I should be able to finish it though. :) Sorry Floss, I can't really put in a bird at this stage - possibly a blackbird or crow, but the leaves would show underneath it. Not sure if one would land in the tree two feet from these guys,...

Lineart requests?

Question! Since I won't be able to make good my promise of videos this month, have you got any wishes for (existing) linearts to colour? (Or just to study them?) Feel free to let me know what you think. :) I'm always open to any new suggestions!

Fun with a loose background, even with some dry brush technique. I don't think I've ever done that. My back is better - thanks to a combination of a new desk chair and a new routine of exercises. Yay. Faint hopes of not being a total wreck by the age of fifty ahoy!

Some cool things are happening. Before the year is out, you may see me in ImagineFX magazine, my own artbook, and on a DVD. *L* Probably about an 85% chance for each of these. For the artbook especially, I'll probably do some special deals for you cool people, and raffle off a few. Plus sketches here and there. ^^ The DVD has me biting my fingernails up to my elbow, but more about that when I'm sure.

Two captains - wip1

I'll try to make a video or two on the more interesting bits of this later on - but my back is killing me right now, and I seem to twist out of the way of the camera when I film, so please bear with me for a while. I'm working on keeping my runaway vertebrae in line.

Two captains - line art

This one resulted in a fun conversation with my daughter (7): Jana: Oh, he's making an arrow? And that one's sharpening his sword, so this one must be an archer, and the other's a swordsman, right? Me: Yes, that's right. Jana: But how'll he get those feathers for the arrow? Me: He'll probably have to shoot a goose. Jana, sad: Oh. And they've already killed that little dragon, to put it on the helmet.

Nienor on Haudh-en-Elleth, revised sketch

A revised version of the earlier Nienor sketch, zoomed out slightly to show more of the mound she's lying on. I plan to fill nearly the entire canvas with either white periwinkle or anemones. I'm scared already. O_o Do you know any other ground-cover plants (preferably white) that would look good here?

Two captains - wip

Working on the lineart for a commission for our very own Floss. :) Having fun with mixing and matching Germanic and Elven designs in the armour.

Invaded the post office today with all of your goodies, rewards, and raffle winnings. It took me all yesterday afternoon to bundle them up, so there was little chance for many personal notes on or in them. I hope you understand. The A4 print going out to all you great people who have the 20$ and 30$ perk is "Speed now this feathered shaft" (the one from my avatar). It looks really cool printed and I was fairly sure none of you have it already!

Andreth (May raffle commission)

The May raffle commission for Danielle, who asked for Andreth, one of the few human women who appear in the Silmarillion - and with whom Aegnor falls in love, no less. We decided to base her slightly off Ellen Page, with her free spirit and very down-to-earth wisdom - which would be exactly what an Elf-lord would fall in love with in a mortal woman.

Battle in Teutoburg Forest

Whew - this one gave me a run for my money! But it's done now. Next up, Floss's Túrin piece - and the commission for the lucky winner I'll draw tomorrow! =D

It's the end of the month - and that means excitement! I'll wait for the raffle draft until tomorrow - so others can get a chance to get in for this month. Expect the winner announcement tomorrow afternoon (European time)! Please make sure all your addresses are correct. I'll send out the raffle winnings, and the physical rewards, over the next week as the pledges come in!

Coming along... from behind. ;) I had to stop filming this after all - it would have been something like 10 hours total, and I had to twist to avoid getting my head in the way. I think I'll do the recordings for smaller, faster pieces.

Teutoburg painting - sneak peak

Before I colour something very complicated, I often make a digital colour sketch - here, I've put the focus on a clear path through the image (front right to back left or vice versa), the contrast between drab green-greys and dull oranges of the autumn leaves, and the background receding into damp blue-greys that's echoed in the legionaries' helmets in the front. Classical raindrops that cover the enitre image (the way we always tried to do them in high school) rarely work on watercolour. Whet...

Lineart is done. @_@ Client is happy; next: scanning! And then, Túrin and Beleg will get a bit of graphite.
