Before I got locked in on the style that would go on to define PORK & Dungeon Degenerates, I worked in lots of different styles & developed aesthetic languages around them, more in my 20s! As I develop a plan of attack for the future, I’m glad I’ve got this vast & diverse catalog to pull from, while it used to feel like a curse!

I really like 70s MOR bands that I shouldn't, probably from listening to the radio a lot with an open mind & a joint. I found it very difficult to close my heart/mind to music that I would have scoffed at previous. Anyhow, not a tremendous point here, but something worth pointing out.

Anyhow, here are a couple of the Sunday strips, drawing this many comics made my brain spiral off & soon I got into my own, weird form of comics!

This was the first ad for DUNGEON DEGENERATES in PORK 23! The image is called “Hooray For the Bad Guys!” With a lot of my work, there is this weird rooting in the way that the English, particularly Games Workshop picked up D&D from the USA & made it their own! DUNGEON DEGENERATES is me taking that & making it MY own! I turned up the Punk & Metal & the psychedelic colors & the zine-like feeling!

PORK 23 announced a Return to Fantasy with my partying Jabberwock cover. One of the ways my brain works is to put things in boxes & push those boxes around. In the case of PORK, I put Fantasy in a box & didn’t open it for 23 issues! I try to integrate all the elements in my head, but that just leads to a lack of focus. A lack of focus in art is a problem, your audience doesn’t know what to concentrate on!

One of the things that probably helped in terms of having the stroke & losing the ability to draw like I used to is that I’ve viewed myself as hiring myself out to do my own illustration work. Some tattoo flash I did for PORK 29. One of the things that has gotten to me is having to beat the same drum over & over again. I’ve gotten used to beating my own drum all the time because it directly supports my family, but I also feel the need to beat the drum for people to not settle for this mediocre version of reality! I don’t want to channel all my energy into this, but I feel I should do it more!

One of the things that I appreciate the most about this frustrating moment is that it is confirming most of my observations that I made when I really started to look at things as true. That said, Glenn Greenwald is dedicated to the truth & is one of the few journalists I trust. Michael Malice is a non-affiliated anarchist, I think this is useful because anarchism is so fucking hyphenated (confused) these days.

I really like John Blanche's work, especially his stuff from the 70s & early 80s. I feel like he really got the transition from Prog Rock to NWOBHM to Punk in a way that is rarely understood by visual artists OR musicians (or fans). If I were to provide a simple answer it would be Lemmy but... I'm not really into simple answers these days.
