On City Noise

Hey, y'all:

It's finally here! The article I wrote for The Atlantic on urban noise, abatement laws, and inequality.

I hope you enjoy it!

Good House of the Week: Lane County, Oregon

We interrupt our regularly scheduled content to bring you a very important GEODESIC DOME.

Although geodesic domes saw a certain amount of popularity in the 60s and 70s, many have been lost to time. Made famous by architect and inventor R Buckminster Fuller, the geodesic dome became symbolic of 20th century futurism and the zeitgeist of technological advancement.

This home is positively adorable on the inside, with beautiful wood paneling framing the shape of the arc...

Looking Around - On Sound (Part 2): Acoustics

It took forever, but hey, it's a long post!!

View Post

hey folks!

Didn't want you to think I forgot about you! The second installment to the Looking Around: On Sound series is taking a little longer than anticipated because I'm making some of the drawings by hand.

It should be up later this week.

Best wishes, and Happy MLK Day.

I've decided to postpone the Patreon Stream originally scheduled for tonight to Thursday, December 28th at 8PM EST. My family decided to come up to visit me a day earlier than expected, so I will be spending time with them this evening.

Good House of the Week: Tulsa County, Oklahoma

This wonderfully bizarre late-modern home is one of the rare, strange cases that ends up making its way through the McMansion Hell search filter. An odd cross between an A-frame and a ranch, this house is full of unique surprises.

Built in 1979, it is larger than standard ranches, and exhibits several late-70s features that would end up evolving into the luxury tropes of the 1980s, and ultimately the bona fide McMansion, including a "two story" foyer, complete with chandelier, formal din...

Article! also Yay!

Hey guys, I wanted to share this article I wrote a little while back for Jacobin (sadly Architectural Digest only wants articles from me about home decorating #fails, leaving the more esoteric stuff to whoever will take it!!) about some critical ideas about McMansions and Postmodernism. This is the article that underlies most of my argument for the paper (see attached) I posted about a few days ago.

Finals are over which means it's time to return to #content. Thank you for your ...

Paper???

Would you guys be into reading this paper I wrote for my Sound Studies class about architectural acoustics and the sonic symbols of wealth found in single family homes at the height of the bubble (aka McMansions)?

Patreon Changes

These new fee changes are devastating to creators like me. I make my entire living on Patreon and this severely threatens my financial stability. I am a student with one more semester left of school. These disgustingly greedy changes could destroy my livelihood, my finances, and could leave me unable to pay my rent, bills, and tuition. These changes could literally ruin my life.

As a creator, I am more than happy to pay these fees rather than needlessly burden my Patrons.

Service Update

Hey folks! I'm coming into the end of my semester, which means it's (unfortunately) time for finals. As such, posts will likely be spotty for the next two weeks. After finals, the posting schedule will return to normal.

To make it up to my wonderful patrons, I will be doing a Patreon stream on Wednesday, December 20th at 8:30 PM EST to celebrate the end of the school year, where I'll be taking your ugly house links and questions. This stream will be available to ...

Good House of the Week: Franklin County, Ohio

This week''s Good House of the Week is especially adorable. It's a meticulous 2006 recreation of a vernacular home design popular in the Midwest: the Parlor-by-Pass floorplan.  If the listing didn't tell me the house was new, I genuinely would not have known. While the interior is a little but too trendy for my taste (I've grown rather sick of contractor gray walls after 3 ye...

Good House of the Week: Cass County, North Dakota

This week's Good House of the Week is relatively quotidian compared to previous installments. What I like about this house is that it demonstrates that you can still build a lovely house with relatively standard, inexpensive materials.

While it's true that I'm no fan of the front-facing garage, I think that by separating it from the main house and building it at a slight angle helps balance out the composition somewhat.

The house goes for a Craftsman-style look with tapered pylons ...

Good House of the Week: Westchester County, New York

Hello Friends! The good news about this county is that there is an abundance of beautiful houses amongst the wreckage of foam and dystopian rooflines. This home, built in 2002, is one of them.

What really impresses me about this home is the authenticity of the materials. Were it not for my "By Year" search filter, I would have been fooled at first glance into thinking this home was original.

Victorian/Queen Anne revival is a difficult style to get right, mostly for this reason alon...

Good House of the Week: Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Hello Friends! Today's Good House of the Week is a little unusual. In many Southwestern states, it is popular to imitate the vernacular architecture of the area, in this case, the Adobe or Pueblo style, which imitates the vernacular architecture of Native Americans in the area, specifically the Puebloan people. The revival of Pueblo architecture began in the late 19th and 20th centuries, where it coincided with the Mission and Spanish Colonial Revival styles.

Adobe style houses remain re...
