QUICK NOTES - Color Notes

Tried out new painting tricks the other day and discovered color notes which basically adds more to just basic shading. A good trick is to make the different color very close to the value of the original one.

WIP - Peni Parker

I kinda wanted to experiment a bit in terms of making prints so for this piece, I wanted to go for risograph printing! I did a bunch of stumbling around in this one because I didn’t ask beforehand how to format a file for risograph. I eventually found out mid process that i needed to keep some colors at a certain transparency.

WIP - Twitter Requests

I recently did a buttload of character sketches for twitter mutuals. I wanted to practice and figure out a way of doing quick bust sketches of other people’s characters. I’d like to say for the quality of the drawings, it’s not too shabby! I did not expect these sketches to look this somewhat clean haha. There were some characters that were tricky to draw which needed another sketch pass but so far just one pass worked!

WIP - D&D Characters

Practicing painting again! It’s a bunch of experimenting and failing with figuring out forms and values. I‘d like to believe I somewhat have a basic grasp on picking colors but I fall flat when determining 3d forms and values. Watching the process it looks like i’m unsure! APRIL 2019 UPDATE

Wow thank goodness this month’s over. A bit of a crazy one this month in terms of real life. I wrapped up some work around the start of the month and I feel like I can breathe now. For the past week, I’ve decided to take it easy a bit from work to recharge a bit.

STUDIES - Painting

Had a drawing meet up the other day and got inspired by my friends doing painting/value studies. It’s kinda inconsistent for me to tackle different things but I realized I need to brush up on my color picking and painting without relying on smudging edges and layer blending modes. Treating this like a....reviewer? So very little reference was used making these and it kinda proves that I need to do keep studying this kind of stuff again like how muscles fold/stretch and the placements of certain anatomical land marks.

Some lineless drawing experiments that I ran out of energy and interest for. I don’t know what happened but i USED to do this a lot. Perhaps when my style shifted to a line-oriented one, i just couldn’t muster any satisfaction making lineless work lately. What i like about working lineless is that I get to think in shapes more without worrying about line quality. Ah well! i’ll be back sometime haha!

STUDIES - Construction

Alright! I wanna do these kinds of things again. I wanted to rethink how I construct anatomy. I think I’ve gotten so used to drawing bodies that, while i do think about anatomy and such, I don’t give mind to how I do my construction. I usually rely on contours when I do stuff in perspective.

What I did here is that I did my usual construction method (the really sketchy one), and then deconstructed it to the block method and then just for kicks I added how i’d apply anatomy.

MARCH 2019 UPDATE (Anniversary)

And just like that, we’ve reached 1 year on this Patreon already?!! Apparently I started this during the first week of April so we’ll be getting there in a few days!

WIP - Tinikling

Boy here’s a doozy. It’s just one of those drawings which theoretically shouldn’t take that long but it did. I mostly spent my time figuring out how i’m lining forms (round or angular), going with shading, or messing around with colors. I took inspiration from Choo‘s drawing and coloring style but I couldn’t seem to nail the colors yet. I was lining all over the place, too!

this title again BUT just wanting to share my process in sketching, lining, and coloring of this drawing. I’ve been doing more work on Artstudio Pro as of the late and I kinda wished it also tracked the time I spent working on it like in Procreate.

Missed on some really sketchy drawings I made a while back. Wanted to make some fighting poses but they ended up being super messy as if I dumped a lot of the energy into the lines. Repeating of bad habits I guess. I should be more mindful of my lines. Maybe I'll get back to those among my million other sketches haha

I should make a separate post type for these guys aleady as i‘m slowly exploring ideas like fairy guy using disguise magic. Maybe as the year develops i’ll put more time to this thing other than drawing these two. Kinda tricky to convert his proportions (which are like 3 1/2 - 4 heads)  into human ones but i’ll get there.

Some more brush exercises and experiments where i jump in to the shape and then building up from there. It’s a nice change of pace! I feel it helps in switching up proportions and learning how to arrange elements into a drawn thing (like eyes, nose, mouth).

Technically it’s a process video but moving on— I have been very busy lately so I just wanted to squeeze in a quick drawing. The recorded time for this one was around 13 mins but looking back, I feel it’s kinda slow based on the output. I wanted to try out and practice drawing straight without relying on sketch layers so this was a fun exercise. It was refreshing too!

WIP - Watercolor Tests

Found some really sweet watercolor brushes for Procreate! I’d say they’re pretty impressive and it nails the opacity of watercolors. I do wish there’s a way to somehow keep the colors “wet” so i could mix and match other colors. My workaround was to use the smudge tool to make a “bleed” effect haha. Playing with this kinda made me miss watercolors :’)

FEBRUARY 2019 UPDATE

Here we go! February! Very weird month of different things but i survived it. Went to my first local con in a while time and it was all good fun with friends. I do wish I had made a comic or zine for it.

In other news, I finally (after some discussing with friends) went in and got myself a website and domain. So far, portfoliobox seems to be doing the trick. I am not that satisfied with the layout but this is how I imagined my stuff grouped given the work i’ve been doing lately! It fe...
