Journey across Ukraine

We were driving late at night along an empty Polish highway. The closer we got to the Ukrainian border, the quieter it became. Hardly any traffic, just the occasional local speeding past us, and convoys of civilian and military trucks under police escort.

There was a lot of uncertainty . We didn’t know if we would even be allowed through with all our camera equipment and camping gear. To me, it all felt suspicious. A few hours later we arrived at the border. There was a long line of t...

Exploring Cold-War era Soviet bunkers

During my stay in Ukraine, I explored many abandoned places, including numerous Cold War–era bunkers. Most of the bunkers we found were still in remarkably good condition and filled with items from the Soviet Union. Because these locations were so striking and each told a story of its own, I decided to create a dedicated video about them.

The combination of well-preserved Soviet history and the real threat of Russian airstrikes created a unique atmosphere. Standing in abandoned bunker...

Ukraine

Almost four years ago, two weeks before February 24th, I was standing in line for my flight to Kyiv. At the gate, it turned out that suddenly extra documents were required; the Russian army was already at the border of Ukraine at that point, and according to the airport staff, the entry procedure had become stricter. A crew member hastily showed me a stack of papers in Cyrillic. I barely understood any of it, but I did realize that my flight to Ukraine would be leaving without me. <...

Abandoned France pt.2

After my cycling trip along the Meuse, I decided to head back home. The nice bike path had come to an end, there wasn’t that much interesting left to see along the way, and I didn’t want to abandon my bike after it had served me so well. On top of that, I was carrying too much gear to continue, which I could never fit into my backpack, so I decided to reorganize everything at home and plan my next steps more carefully.

A while later, I set off again to continue my journey. The...

Abandoned France

Hi everyone, it’s been a while!

All through July I was working on a project that had nothing to do with YouTube. Because of that, I didn’t have time to make new videos or go on new trips. Only in August was I able to pick this project back up again.

Editing this video turned out to be quite a struggle: it was a very different process than what I’m used to since I was less familiair with this type of format. On top of that, I’ve started filming in higher re...

Distant Peaks

After our three-day stay in Vranje, we took a bus to Skopje. Freight trains were running, but we didn’t want to cross the border illegally. Besides, the distance between the two cities was so short that it wasn’t worth waiting for a freight.

Once we arrived in Skopje, we immediately decided to do a roof to get a good overview of the city. The first building was already a hit. When we were on top, the city stretched out before us; tall brutalistic buildings, abandoned factories...

Riding Rust

After the hectic journey through Turkey, we were in need of some familiarity and freedom. That’s why we decided to return to the Balkans. The place where, if you get caught, a pack of cigarettes and ten euros in local currency is often enough to solve the problem. No looming prison sentences hanging over your head just for wandering along a rusty track by the yard.

This time, we set our sights on North Macedonia, the only country in the Balkans I hadn’t visited yet. Trains are a rar...

New video coming soon!

Thanks to your amazing support, I was able to invest in a new lens for my camera, a much better one (Canon rf24-105). This video will be the first one I've filmed with it. Personally I see a pretty big improvement in quality stability and colors.

Right now I just finished the raw cut of the video. There’s still plenty of work ahead, but I’m putting in the hours and aiming to have it ready in about 7 days.

Stay tuned!

Police and Prayers

Turkey had been high on my list for a long time: rugged landscapes, a fascinating culture, and an extensive railway network. Still, I knew from the start that it wouldn’t be an easy place to ride freights. The railway infrastructure is heavily guarded, police presence is high, and the authorities take a very protective stance when it comes to their transport systems. As far as I knew, only three people have ridden freights in Turkey, and all three were arrested or detained.

Despite th...

Binari Notturni

As I was cycling home in the rain, I got a message from Aki: Yoyo, do you have anything planned for next week? I had some things to do, but I also really needed to get away. Yeah, I replied, but I can free up five days. What are we doing?

After brainstorming about destinations that were warm enough and didn’t require endless waiting for a train, we settled on Italy. From Bologna to Bari, the route I had wanted to take on my last Italy trip but couldn’t because of the floods. This ti...

New video!

Finally back!

After receiving my third strike on my channel, I wasn’t able to upload anything proper anymore. Luckily, strikes aren’t permanent. They expire after three months. So now, I can finally upload videos again.

Many of you are aware of the issues I have with YouTube, but a lot of my followers, just on YouTube, aren’t. I often get asked why I delete my videos, when in reality, it’s YouTube systematically removing my content. That’s why I made this video, to...

Trainhopping across Spain

(Deleted by YouTube - Original upload date: Mar 25, 2022)

Spain had been on my mind for a long time. The good temperatures and beautiful scenery made trainhopping there very attractive. After doing a lot of research, I concluded that the country wasn’t possible to travel by freight because of the Iberian railway. The Iberian railway has a different track gauge than the rest of Europe, meaning that not a lot of freight trains cross into Spain. Instead, they transport most of their ...

3 Strikes

What I’ve been fearing for a long time has finally happened. I received three strikes on my YouTube channel. Normally, three strikes result in permanent termination of a channel, but surprisingly, my channel is still up. Whether this is intentional (maybe they secretly like my videos?) or just a glitch in the system, I honestly don’t know.

What is certain is that I’m unable to upload any trainhopping-related content until the strikes expire on March 3. Until then, all new trainhop...

The last stretch to Vancouver

The final part of my Canada journey.

After just a few hours of sleep, we decided to start hitchhiking. Ashcroft, the place where we were staying, wasn’t a crew-change location, so no trains stopped there. Our goal was North Bend, a crew-change spot deep in the mountains.

A car stopped quickly. A woman picked us up because she saw Ranger, Ace’s dog. Ace told me that Ranger was a major asset: thanks to him, not only did he earn more while busking, but he also got rides fr...

The Hunt for the 113

When the locomotive at the back of the train disappeared around the bend, I hoisted my backpack onto my shoulders to cross the tracks and continue my journey. The original plan was simple: reach a nearby lake, pitch my tent there, and finally rest. After being awake for almost 24 hours, 20 of which spent on a loud and cold train, I longed for silence and peace. But that plan quickly vanished when I ...

Riding across the Prairies

(Removed by YouTube)

After spending five days in Ontario, it was time to leave the province behind and continue our journey towards Vancouver. I was excited to explore a new part of Canada. The endless forests gradually gave way to vast plains, dotted with small towns that thrived on agriculture. The trains moved a lot faster here, as the tracks often cut straight through the landscape. These were the provinces where we could cover a lot of ground, and that’s exactly wh...

Ontario Odyssey

After some setbacks in Toronto, we decided to venture further out of the city. Once we left, the maze of train tracks simplified to a single line running just two ways: east and west. This was our gateway to Ontario’s endless forests and lakes. The atmosphere immediately felt calmer. A place surrounded by vast woods, open fields, and serene lakes. It set the tone perfectly for the rest of the province.

In Ontario, I got a true taste of Canadian trainhopping. The landscapes were stunni...

Canadian Catch Out

Since I discovered trainhopping, riding across Canada has been a dream. The untouched nature, the long double-stack container trains, and the vast, remote landscapes seemed incredible. Last September, after saving up for a while, I finally turned that dream into reality, thanks to you guys, and prepared to cross Canada from Montreal all the way to Vancouver. A stretch of roughly 4,800 km. Initially, I planned to go solo, but as it happened, a Canadian rider I’d been following on Instagram w...

Eternal Skies

The endless skies of Saskatchewan stretched above me, painting a perfect evening. With the land so flat, the sunset seemed to last for hours, casting warm colors across the still air. The sunlight reflected off the sides of the shipping containers in front of me, while endeless fields stretched out on both sides, occasionally interrupted by shimmering salt lakes. It was a serene moment before the chill of night set in.

This is a teaser for my upcoming journey through Canada. The first p...

Mission to the Arctic Circle | Part 4

After pushing ourselves pretty hard over the past few days, we decided it was time to slow down and enjoy some peace in the mountains. By this point, we already felt like we had accomplished much of our journey, having made it nearly to the end of the northernmost railway line in Europe. We had crossed Denmark and Sweden, and now, after covering thousands of kilometers, we had finally arrived in Norway. But simply reaching the Arctic Circle wasn’t enough for us. We were determined to go fur...

Update

Hi everyone. Part 4 of my Scandinavian journey was scheduled to come out yesterday, but because I got a strike on my last video, I can't upload for two weeks as a 'punishment'. Part 4 didn't contain any train riding and is 100% safe for YouTube. That's why I didn't back it up on vimeo. Once I get home, I will post part 4 on here immediately.

Now I'm sitting next to a river, warming up in the sun after a cold night ride. I'm sleep deprived, hungry, and completely dirty from riding trai...

Trainhopping to the Adriatic Sea

Another video that unfortunately fell victim to the YouTube system.

Original upload date: 27 April 2022

When I was in the Czech republic on my journey from Belgium to Hungary I saw a pretty interesting train in the yard, I went to check it out and I read on the transport papers that the train was going to Koper, a coastal city in Slovenia. I imagined it would be a nice route and I kept it in mind.

Now that the weather is a bit warmer, I dec...

Mission to the Arctic Circle | Part 2

The sun was quietly rising and the occasional ray of sunlight touched through the body of the trailer. Literally and figuratively small points of light, the night was terrible. It was freezing cold and we had the North wind against us, I didn't want to take out my sleeping bag because then I also had to take off my shoes and thus couldn't run quickly should we be spotted. Also, I had hit my head on an iron bar. I was dizzy and later Rico also noticed that I was bleeding a little. Somehow I wa...

Mission to the Arctic Circle | Part 1 (Trainhopping across Scandinavia)

Ever since I discovered that it was possible to travel by freight across Europe, I’ve had this route in mind. Three vast countries with breathtaking landscapes, few people, and excellent rail networks—it seemed like the perfect combination for a trainhopping adventure. However, with excellent railroads come strict regulations, and riding freight trains is not something they will have a laugh about. That’s partly why I postponed this trip so many times. I wanted to prepare everything per...

Trainhopping across Serbia (Part 2 & 3)

A journey through the heart of the Balkans, released in 2022. I re-rendered it in better quality, and I also improved the sound, subtitles and color. Part 1 is still available on my channel, since there was no trainhopping going on in that one.

I hope you will enjoy!
