Video Poll: Maya or Inca Religion?

Hi everyone! I'm about half-way done my next video: Aztec Religion. I'm aiming to make a mini-series on Mesoamerican and South American religions. What culture should I focus on after the Aztec video goes live? The Mayas or the Incas?

January announcements

Time for a housekeeping post!:

1) Sunday Livestream: I'm scheduling a livestream for today at noon (US East Coast time, Sunday, January 3) for the $5+ tiers. I'm sorry for the weird timing. I'm still trying to work out the best time of day to schedule livestreams from Egypt! I'm currently thinking weekends are best, but let me know if there is any interest in weekday daytime streams.

2) Perk fulfillment: I'm doing another wave of perk fulfil...

Writing a DIY Guide for religion in fictional novels/video games/movies

*repost from the RFB Discord server*

A few months ago, someone on the Patreon livestream suggested that I make a "How to" guide for writers on how to invent a believable religion in a fictional movie, video game, book, etc. My current thoughts would be to focus on a few points that I see in real-world religions, but seldom see in fictional religions. I'm open to suggestions and feedback on this outline. What fictional religions would you recommend I use as examples as either "good exam...

Dispatch #1 from my weekly reading

Why the academic study of religion?

I've been trying to read a lot more these days. I've deleted a few social media apps from my phone to try to reclaim some time in my day to read at least one book per week and one article per day. And as I've been reading, I've come across all sorts of cool insights that I'd like to share in occasional Patreon posts.

Here's a quote from the scholar of religion Dr. Donald Wiebe that stuck out to me from his 1988 article: "W...

Am I neutral?

One of the most common comments I receive on Religion for Breakfast is that I am so "neutral" and "objective" in my analyses. The thing is...I strongly believe that value-free and objective scholarship does not exist. Everyone brings biases to the table, including me.

I've started writing a video titled "I am not neutral" that will dig into epistemology and objectivity in the study of religion. Luckily, my network of religious studies scholars on Twitter have so many helpful sugge...

Super excited to announce that I'm producing a 5-episode "Psychology of Religion Series" to be launched in early 2021. I'm writing the series in collaboration with religious studies PhD candidate Kendra Holt Moore, a colleague from my days at Boston University who is an expert in this field.

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate! I just posted my quick introduction to the holiday (and of course I snuck in some basic religious literacy methodology) :)

Arrived in Cairo!

Hi everyone,

I arrived in Cairo yesterday to start my post doctoral fellowship at the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE). I'm super jetlagged and overwhelmed exploring a new city, so my video schedule will be a bit slow for the next few weeks as I acclimate to the new environment, but you can expect the next video (Intro to Mandaeism) within a week or so!

Help with video title!

Hi everyone. So I'm publishing a new video tomorrow. I'm excited about the topic, but I'm really struggling with a good title for the video. It's basically about: "What is the earliest image of Jesus, and why do we portray Jesus w/ long hair and beard?" Here are a few suggestions, but I'm not super happy with any of them. Any ideas?

A heartfelt "thank you" to the RFB patrons

Hi everyone! I published "Yazidi Religion Explained" yesterday, and it's off to a strong start. Check it out to learn about this fascinating religious community: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRB9e9Ol4Hs&t=1s

This was one of the most difficult videos for me to make. The research was difficult to find and contradictory. So it took hours and hours to write the script. Then, the editing...

Testing RFB Discord

Hey all $5 patrons! I've been testing a new Patreon feature with the $10 and $30 Patrons, and I'm opening it up to all of you now too! Patreon allows you to integrate Discord into your patron tiers. My brother, EC Henry (also a YouTuber), says his Patreon Discord has been a big hit, so I'm giving it a try myself.

If you're a Discord user, you may have received a notification that you were added to the RFB Patreon server. That happened automatically as soon as I enabled Discord int...

Researching religious pre-roll ads on the channel

Hi everyone! I've been curious about the pre-roll ads that play before RFB videos. I'm going to try to crowdsource this research. Can you post the types of ads you see on RFB videos? Which organizations are buying ad spots?

I'll be chatting with my friend (and BBC religion journalist) Sophia Smith Galer tomorrow and want to show up to the meeting with some data!

PhD dissertation defense officially scheduled!

I just wanted to write a quick note to you all announcing that I will finally [and hopefully] be completing my PhD in religious studies on August 7th! This is the culmination of an 8-year-long journey when I first entered Boston University's PhD program in September 2012.

I'll keep you updated on how the defense goes! I'm thinking, if all goes well, that I'll host a livestream with you all to celebrate. Thank you all for your continued support!

Help me with a video title!
