2022-01-16 15:34:03 +0000 UTC View PostSo far I focused my energy on the comic, as you might have seen from the updates in this channel. We intend to keep our focus on the comic for the time being. That said, in the weekends I'll focus more on other illustrations as a means to take a slight break from the comic, currently working on the Water Tiger illustration. Don't forget I'm giving a workshop this Saturday.
Thank you all for your support!

Hi everyone ♥
It's been some time but we have exciting news for this new year. We changed the tiers to be more comic-centric, so that we can focus more of our time towards the development of Simple Spirits. This means that there will be less standalone illustrations and more WIPs of the comic. We are also gonna try to involve you more in the process. We both think it can be an exciting and educational experience.
Lots of love
Greg and Thomas ♥
Greg: This page went through quite a few changes aswell. Thomas changed this scene 2 weeks before I started drawing these again. The final product is much better than the original concept where we see that Hiro's story and Jacob start to intertwine a bit better...

Greg: This page saw a lot of changes! I needed the right amount of space to let the emotions be felt and not overcrowd the page, but I also needed to let Beatrice take things in, that she has time to realize what Hiro was hiding behind her back. This is why the panels are big and breathy. Loads of white, grey and beige to evoke clarity.

Greg: This page took me longer than expected and I think it's because conversations are inherently difficult to draw. It's about finding the right rhythm and pauses. Also I really didn't need to put as many backgrounds as I did, but I'm happy I did.

Who is this toned boy? 👀
Greg: There were 2 major challenges for this page. Thomas specifically asked me to hide Red's face for this part of the story and I had to show his reaction to the page before, his reaction to the flower being dead and him throwing it in the trash. I feel like I managed to hide his face well but boy it wasn't easy. The second challenge was to make it look night. I used a lot more black for this page and also a gradient of blue on the walls to make it look cooler and darker.
Greg: It took me soooooo long to decide how to design this page. I couldn't decide on what vibe I wanted for this page. I went from glitchy to scribbly to fire-y to scribbly again. I'm happy with the final result, feels like a good balance in details.

Greg: My understanding of creepiness is that you have to be in the uncanny valley. The shadowy figure always needed to be creepy and I struggled so much to make it that way without overdoing it. I feel like I managed to succeed in making it creepy. To achieve this feeling I used a mix of color shift throughout the panels and made the shadowy figure like a person that was burnt! Since the following page was going to be mostly fire imagery, this made sense to me.

Thomas: This page is a seemingly weird page that has nothing to do with the story. However I really wanted to add it in here because I wanted the readers to realize quickly that this story is not just about college drama, there is also magic, fantasy maybe.... adventure? 👀
It's another way too hook readers into the story, to show that there's more!
Greg: Once again a 3 row structure, a more intimate moment with Hiro. Fun fact: Thomas is an actual real tram station here in Belgium. I added that as the name of the Metro line as a nod to that tram station but also, obviously because I love Thomas. ❤️

Greg: I don't know if you noticed but this page - and page 4 - don't have detailed backgrounds. My logic for this is; if I have introduced the background before, people don't need to see it again. People have a mental image for it and so it's not necessary to reintroduce it for close up shots. I use a mix of colours to subtly hint at the background. Establishing shots don't get the same treatment obviously or shots where the space matters for story or action purposes.

Greg: Here we are again with the 3 row structure. This is definitely a more intimate moment for Hiro. He realizes that he can't really be part of this world, even though he really wants to. reality starts to seep in and he decides to go home.

Greg: I had a lot of fun with this page because I asked around who wanted their OCs to be included in the background. I often say that the Simple Spirits world is a world of OCs where everything from fantasy and stories are canon. A bit like in Wreck it ralph. It's the modern "behind-the-scenes"-world for fantasy characters.

Greg: For this page, the last panel was by far the biggest challenge. How do you show that the city they live in is vibrant with life? Another thing is the level of details in each background character. How much is too much or too little? In a lot of anime, it's almost a joke that you can quickly tell who's the main character because their design is way more intense than background characters. I didn't want this to be true in our comic.

Greg: I guess this might sound weird - However, it does make sense since I'm the artist - but pages with no text whatsoever are my favourite pages. Those pages are the ones I feel like I'm transported in the story the most. It kind of feels like a movie where everything you need to know is shown to you and not told to you.
