Portrait of Strahd

Originally a commission for @NobodyJustBrad, I thought this might be fun for anyone wanting to show a portrait of a more vain and youthful Strahd (youthful for him, anyways). The hair reference the commissioner showed me had lovely feathered locks like Farrah Fawcett - hopefully I did them justice. Please feel free to use in your home game, or any other way you like!

Enjoy!

Volenta Popofsky, Redux

Volenta's illustration had a few little things about it that set it apart from her fellow consorts - the perspective, level of detail, a few bits and bobs about her costume, etc. so I thought I'd redo her. Still the same ol' sadistic torture-fiend you all know and love.

Count Strahd von Zarovich

"I am that which sets the edge of your rage, the teeth of your hunger, and the fire in your heart." - I, Strahd.

The ancient, the land. The design in the 5e module lacks a lot of the opera that makes Strahd such a fun villain, so I gave Strahd a more unified color palette, a longer cloak, and his collar and throat-gem back. It's closer to the 5e design than anything else, though. Hopefully you enjoy my take on it.

Preview of Strahd von Zarovich

Hello to all my fellow Faces in the Mist!

Just spending a little of my Sunday to share a preview of what’s dropping this week. I’ve been very busy with work and commissions (thank you), but I’m able to put forth this update for anyone who might need a fun image of the Count.

Have a great game, and be careful out there!

Curse of Strahd Title Cards

Sometimes, when my (I'm the DM) Curse of Strahd campaign turns a corner, or when there's a theme to explore during a specific chapter of the story, I try to encapsulate how it makes me feel with a quote (or something suitably sinister that I make up). I've turned these moments into title cards to show to my players before a session - and now you can, too!

I've titled the images after where I plan to use them, or have done. Feel free to take these and make your own!

Father Lucian Petrovich

Dragnacarta includes Father Lucian in the “Bones of St. Andral” sidequest, so I thought it was only fair to include a bit of art for Vallaki’s priest. As there are two prominent religous figures in Barovia’s recent history, St. Markovia and St. Andral, and St. Markovia seems to be the more humble and pious of the two, I figured Father Lucian is honoring the Vallaki tradition of dressing a bit more like an Orthodox pontiff or patriarch, with cloth-of-gold embroidery on his robes. But i...

Morgantha and her Girls, Totally Normal Human Bakers

One of the most-requested pieces is for art of Morgantha and her “daughters” that doesn’t immediately give the game away. Here I’m using the module’s text, describing the four-dusted girls as “hideous” but not monsterous.

Hope you and your players enjoy this art of these happy bakers enjoying their trade and doing nothing wrong.

July and August To-Do Lists

Hello again everybody!

Another courtesy announcement of how I plan to spend the next couple of months in the world of Curse of Strahd: Reloaded, just so you all know what to expect. (Quick plug: If you’re reading this as a free patron and you’d like to see even more illustrations pop up in your feed, please consider joining at the Copper or Silver level. Every bit helps me on my path to being this closer to full-time, and gets you art you can use for your games more quickly.) View Post

Verushka

Verushka, a chambermaid from Ravenloft's past, has been haunting the castle for hundreds of years. As written, she's given a jumpscare, but in Curse of Strahd Reloaded Dragnacarta has fleshed her out quite a bit. It was my pleasure to be able to illustrate Verushka and give this noble character an illustration of her own.

Anton

Anton Konstantinov is an intriguing addition that Dragnacarta inserted into Curse of Strahd: Reloaded. A servant of the von Zarovich household that one can meet during the fateful dinner, Anton is a fantastic character for an artist - visually striking, with lots of ways to decipher the description. Hope you enjoy my take on him.

Changes in the Mist...

Hey, everybody. Faces in the Mist has been puffing along for nearly a year now, and I wanted to extend my thanks to those who been along for the journey, and a hearty welcome to those who have just joined the party. I hope you enjoy the journey.

I've been considering putting a bunch of these tortured souls and horrible monsters onto prints fo...

Gertruda

Abducted by Strahd before the game begins, Gertruda is one of the vampire's potential Barovian victims that PCs can find in the castle. As written, Gertruda possesses a child-like personality with few survival skills - intended to seem like a shut-in by her fearful and overprotective mother "Mad" Mary. She's also been charmed by the vampire, so she won't see him as a threat, and she has not been bitten... yet.

I've drawn her to look a late teens/early 20s (definitely an adult),...

Sasha Ivliskova

“Webs as thick and pale as linen cover a shapely female form lying atop a marble slab in the center of this dusty, web-filled crypt. You hear a voice issue from the darkness.

"My love, have you come to set me free?"

The woman rises, the shroud of webs clinging to her in a ghastly fashion…”

Little is said of Strahd’s first wife in the 2015 module; fortunately Dragnacarta sees this as as opportunity in CoS: Reloaded and gives...

Durst Family Portrait

"Hanging above the mantelpiece is a wood-framed portrait of the Durst family: Gustav and Elisabeth Durst with their two smiling children, Rose and Thorn. Cradled in the father's arms is a swaddled baby, which the mother regards with a hint of scorn..."

Death House is a great location, whether you want a mysterious setting that acts as a metaphor for Barovia as a whole, or a terrifying place to TPK a party at level 2. The Dursts themselves have always invited speculation, so her...

Kiril Stoyanovich - "The Black Terror"

"Suddenly, the beast's form twists and swells in size, shattering the stillness with a grotesque symphony of cracking bone and sinew. Its silhouette staggers from four legs to two, its spine and limbs lengthening and popping unnaturally. Swollen, misshapen muscle chokes each inch of its form, its towering figure nearly matching the cavern's fifteen-foot mouth in height."

My favorite parts of Reloaded a...

Bianca Stoyanovich

Hey everybody - in the module, Bianca is a white-haired, watchful and loyal partner to Kiril Stoyanovich. In Dragnacarta's Curse of Strahd Reloaded - she's a little more nuanced (with an amazing intro). Either way, I encourage you to read both and judge for yourself. Hopefully you enjoy what I've done here and decide to incorporate this free content into your game. This is ...

Escher Belasco

“… a handsome young man with long, blond hair, his soft features sharpened by a frozen smile. [He bows] deeply… with a cat’s mocking grace… and step[s] aside to pull open the doors for your passage.”

As the only masculine of Strahd’s consorts, Escher is definitely one of the most-requested of the Curse of Strahd NPCs. I’ve tried to stay as close to the palettes of Richard Whittiers’ illustration in the module, while giving a little more “youthful” detail. ...

Zorya, Pseudodragon Spirit

There are restless spirits everywhere in the haunted mansion of Argynvostholt, but one of the least-threatening ones is the ghost of the old dragon's familiar Zorya, who more than anything wants to put the PCs on the right track. I felt the little guy deserved a portrait since he tends to stick around the PCs in Curse of Strahd RRL, if their smart enough to realize what he is. <...

"Escape from Death House" Handouts

Hi there everyone - thanks again for following my Patreon. To show my gratitude, here are all the handouts you'd need to run the harrowing first arc of Curse of Strahd as written by Dragnacarta, with art contributions by me and my collection of fonts and textures. Enjoy!

Zulieka Toranescu and Ilya and Kala Krezkov

Both Ilya and Kala Krezkov are major plot-points in the original module, and they remain so in ReReloaded, although they’re given a bit more voice. I did a version of Zulieka here too, with an emphasis on giving her a slightly more sympathetic expression. I’ll keep spoilers packed away for now, but hope you enjoy these images - as always, feel free to use them in your home games!

May and June to-do lists

Hello all -

I certainly appreciate when creators I follow give me a little notice so I can anticipate what they’re working on, so I thought I’d pay you all the same courtesy. Here’s what I plan to have on the “Faces in the Mist” drawing board for the next two months, outside of my normal day work and commissions.

Curse of Strahd ReReloaded : Barovian Relics Pt. 2

... the second part of the plot-hook items that Dragnacarta described in Curse of Strahd: ReReloaded. If you haven't checked out the easy, adjusted guide to the module that Dragna's writing, please do yourself a favor and have a look. It's easy to admire how he's taken a lot of the hard work out of DMing a module that, historically, is quite a challenge even for...

Vladimir Horngaard

The terrible sound of scraping metal fills the air, and the knight turns to face you, revealing a pale-skinned corpse with burning red eyes in a sunken, skeletal face.

“Neither thieves nor assassins—and yet, you are here." He narrows his eyes, and the blade of his greatsword glints dangerously. “Tell me, then, why the living have come to disturb the dead."

I dug deep in order to refrain from going too nuts on Vlad’s armor, which you’ll see if you look a...

Curse of Strahd ReReloaded : Barovian Relics Pt. 1

One of the coolest tools that Dragnacarta introduced into CoS:RRL is the concept of the Barovian Relics: DMs can, if they opt to do so, use these simple and fun character-driven tools to draw player characters into and around the cursed realm of Barovia. I don't want to give away too much (you can read the free version here to learn how to use them) but...

The knight’s head lifts, revealing red eyes that flash with a quiet intensity. "...welcome travellers," he rasps. “I must ask that you forgive my rudeness. I am ill-disposed to greet you properly."

I'll do my best to resist posting spoilers here - but Godfrey has always been an amazing character. I'm so happy to have a chance to do an illustration of him.

Dinner with Strahd - sketches

Doodles of how the "Dinner with Strahd" illustration evolved, mostly involving moving the viewer into the action, and sliding the brides out so the eye is mostly focused on Strahd, the point of highest contrast.

Ezmerelda d'Avenir

"Ezmerelda d'Avenir, a Vistana, is the protégé of Rudolph van Richten - despite the fact that her first encounter with the vampire hunter was anything but pleasant."

I've depicted Ezmerelda wearing the armor in her stat block, and gave her prosthesis a bit more of a steampunk appearance? Had a bit of help from the members of the CoS community redesigning her dikhlo (thanks so much Mary!), so all-in-all I'my fairly happy with it.
