In this episode we finally make a decision about how to fix our gearbox / propeller issue, and we haul Tally Ho out of the water for a few days to get it sorted!
Meanwhile, Tally Ho’s original capstan arrives back at the boat, having been rebuilt by Keith Rucker and motorised by Webster’s Boat Machinery.

Today's planned video has been delayed until tomorrow due to technical issues. Sorry about that!
In the meantime, here's a photo of the new and beautifully engineered machinery that sits underneath the original capstan winch.
Thanks everyone!

This beautiful photo shows all five sails, and was taken by PT Maritime the first time we flew the Working Topsail and the Flying Jib. These are two of Tally Ho's mid- to light-wind sails. More photos coming soon!

Huge congratulations to our very own Patrick Kingshill for building an awesome sliding-seat sculling wherry, and then using it to claim FIRST SOLO FINISHER in the SEVENTY48 race this year! An epic achievement - bravo Paddy!!

Endless thanks to Keith Rucker for doing a fantastic job with the restoration (make sure to watch his videos on the Vintage Machinery channel!), to Dave Webster (Webster's Boat Machinery) for incredible design and engineering work on the motor addition, to Windy Hill Foundry for casting the new top-piece, to Dave Clark for making the pattern, and to Bill for driving this thing at record speed almost 3000 miles across the country to us!
Now we need to coat it to protect it from corrosio...

Tally Ho's interior is coming along, but there are still a lot of finishing touches, and even a few major jobs still to do down below! Nic has made an Oak grab-handle and is fastening it to the corner-post in the saloon - it'll come in very handy when Tally Ho is heeled over out at sea.

Sean Rankins of Northwest Sails finishes off some handwork on one of Tally Ho's headsails!
Northwest Sails and Canvas is a really great local sail-loft owned by Sean and his wife Inger. They do beautiful work, and are making all of Tally Ho's headsails - Staysail, Jib #1, Jib #2, Jib #3, Flying Jib, and a full-hoist Reacher.
Inger is also making some of our sail and deck-furniture covers.
I'm really happy to be working with NWSails, and with a bit of luck you might see so...

We recently turned Tally Ho around to work on the bow from the dock - we fitted the bronze anchor-roller, and hung our main anchor on it!
We are using a Rocna Vulcan as our main "hook" - it's a modern anchor with really great holding power for it's weight. We will also carry a traditional fisherman's anchor, which is useful on rocky bottoms and also as a kedge or dredging anchor. We have 330' of 1/2" chain, and another 300' of 1' nylon anchor rode.
....and hopefully soon we will...

In this episode; After talking about our propeller pitch issues we go out for a second sea trial, and Tally Ho runs aground at low tide. Later, after some other work, we discover that our prop issue is a deeper problem that we thought, and could require changing our gearbox or hauling Tally Ho out of the water again.

As well as traditional paper charts, Tally Ho is equipped with modern electronic navigational equipment. On the ships computer we are using TimeZero Navigation Software to display charts, radar, depth sounder, and all manner of other nav data.
I chose this system to back up traditional navigation because the TimeZero software is so versatile and functional. As someone who is used to paper charts, I can configure the plotter to display paper-style charts on the screen, which means I'm ...

Nic is working on the bench for the saloon table / galley. It is made from solid cherry using an adapted shaker-style design. The seat of the bench will open to reveal a storage compartment. The location of this bench means it can be used while facing either way - towards the saloon table or towards the galley. I have a feeling it will get used a lot!

Tally Ho's saloon table is made completely from original timbers that were removed from the hull near the beginning of the rebuild project - hull planking and hatch coamings, all 200+ year-old Teak.
George did a great job of removing all the old fastenings, repairing the holes with plugs, and building the table itself. It features removable sea-rails (fiddles) and can drop down to form a double-berth.
Catch tomorrow's video to see the construction process!

Tally Ho has launched, but there’s still a huge amount of work to do. The first job is to move the boat to a longer-term berth, which means starting the engine and driving around the marina - a terrifying prospect! Later on we visit Ratsey & Lapthorne - the oldest sail-makers in the world. The beautiful mainsail that they built for Tally Ho is bent to the spars and hoisted for the first time!

For launch, Tally Ho carried a wreath of Cedar boughs on her bowsprit.
Decorating a boat for launch is an old tradition, and using Cedar in particular is a local practice which speaks to respect for the natural world and the indigenous Coast Salish people whose sustenance since time immemorial depended on the Cedar tree. These beautiful trees were used for building longhouses and carved into canoes. Sails, baskets, capes and clothing were made from the bark.
This wreath als...

I'm so pleased to hear how many people enjoyed the launch video! I've been getting lots of messages, which is really lovely - but it's going to take me some time to catch up!
Now, having got our breath back, we're getting back into the swing of things. There are many many things still to do before we can think about sailing. Last week we tested the engine and moved the boat, which felt quite amazing. This week we're testing the hybrid propulsion, bending on the mainsail, and a million ...

Launch video is coming along nicely and should hopefully be released tomorrow if I can finish it tonight!

Hello!
As most of you know, Tally Ho has been launched!
Firstly, MASSIVE thanks to each and every one of you for supporting the project and helping us get this far - we wouldn’t be here without you!
I’m absolutely elated! …and absolutely knackered!
Obviously, there is always a bit of a delay between real life and the YouTube videos - sometimes up to several weeks. The last couple of videos have been an attempt to close this gap as much as possible.
I apolog...

It’s time! We have an imminent launch date! There is a heavy buzz of excitement in the yard, but the clock is ticking fast and there are some really big jobs still on the list. We cast lead ingots to stow in the bilge, paint the hull with green antifoul, hoist the gaff on board, hoist the topmast, and a million other jobs.

It's been hard to keep track of all the progress on Tally Ho's interior ! Here are just a few recent details - the handmade copper shower in the head, lighting in the aft cabin (almost all the interior lights are now wired up!) and the DC switch/breaker panel, fully labelled and functional.

Do you remember Tally Ho's front door?! Okay, okay - it's actually the Engine room door, and it's recently had around 10 coats of varnish and is now looking beautiful and ready to install. The "front door" april fools video was the funniest we've ever made, and the reactions were amazing. I'm afraid I couldn't think of anything to top it this year! Any grand ideas for next year?
