Stefan's mix feedback

Here are the notes from the session. Keep in mind that the minutes are not 100% acurate on time:

0:12 very nice vibe

Top end is a bit much ):33 On that fx

Scratch that probably all fx

Yes, all fx

1:08 louder on the lead sound (or automate via an eq8)

1:54 top end of the drum are very wide (why?)

Wondering about your mono capability

(Not that important but would like to check if it’s not all sides)

2:40 that hi hat needs a b...

Anade's track analysis

As always Anade has the Anade sound. Fat, crispy and atmospheric but I would highly suggest checking if the song translates in the mids. Music lives there so making sure your music (bass and hi end/groove etc) translates is something to take into consideration. https://youtu.be/KSDGXl8W8-Y

Master feedback for Matt

In this video we go over two masters that have already been through a mastering engineer. The topic of loudness and saturation comes up in a master and I use two saturation boxes to figure out what the problem could be.

Felipe

In this song we see a very unique approach of cutting a bit too much for comfort but at the same time it could be a mix sound. It sits well in itself. Sooth will be the easiest to solve the hi hat problem

Clipped kicks and snares

In this video I go over my method of saturation.. and you guessed it. It's in parallel

My percussion secrets

My secret is simple, try to not use 1 hits. Understand that drummers never hit exactly the same way and alter your one hits in volume and frequencies. Or, figure out which drums you like and search "djembe" tutorial and sample that. Or work with a real drummer or pick on up yourself and jam out.

anade's sense of space

Incredible work by anade. His sense of atmosphere in this track is brilliant. Bit more automation and you are golden

Julian Fosk Track critique

In this video I go over Julian's track. It is a wonderful piece and nothing much needs to be adjusted. I also give a general tip on reverb and the loss of "edge" when it's put directly on a lead.

My go to parallel compression

In this video I go more into my parallel compression technique. Generally speaking I using this as a way to help what was mixing. I give two use case examples where in one I needed the melodics to warm up in the sides and the other to brighten up the overall melodics.

The reason I started using technique on melodics  was that I tended to mix the drums a bit too loud and this was a sneaky way of compensating for that.

This technique is always developing and paralle...

Shaping a kick drum

In this video I show how to adjust your kick drum simply via adjusting the ADSR. This will give you a warm kick or an attack kick.

Konari House

It's in that grey zone of stylistic lofi or spoiled girl not getting what you are doing. Up to you which way you would like to go. As for filling it up.. Play the actual instruments in one go through and record that. This will probably lead to you playing fills :).

Community tab for patron critical listening

Hey Everyone,

https://soundcloud.com/elpine/yukon-for-patreon-critique/s-GntLU7nSlPO

We are turning into a small army now and I think it might be an idea to use the community tab to help each other out. My tip would be to only upload completely finished music and have guided questions but it is totally up to you if you need creative input of unfinished music. <...

Vocal processing on Monolake

The top end is where it is at. Make sure to De Ess before you go forth with that. The two plugins that can work are Type A from audio thing and Aphex vintage exciter from waves. The latter being distortion so I would not go that route too fast for a mix that isn't too full

Sonarworks in a pro setup? No thank you

It's very nice to have in a non professional studio (bedroom or DIY. setup) but the main issue remains with the LR differences and no control. I would personally go with REW and mini dsp or REW and a custom fabfilter preset instead.

Great job overall, really nice to see how good you became

Setting up subwoofers

A ruler, REW, measurement mic and minidsp is your go to. (please don't use sonarworks as this minidsp and REW solution is way more advanced).

The concept of non boring arps

On a side note. The guys from PML play their Arps in by hand instead (that's probably the easiest way to non boring arps)

How to keep your arps interesting

Different poly rhythms also get repetitive so change that up too, change notes or order of notes and change rhythmic speeds.. plus the usual sends (which also automate)
