Evolution of Character design

I was helping my roommate to visualize some armor/a helmet for his character. He knew he wanted it to have no eyes and not a lot of decorative detailwork but other than that it was a mystery. So I sketched and we discussed. We also made a clay model. Finally we narrowed it down to the design on the lower right.

Today is going to be crit day! Before I begin on everyone's crit requests I'm going to share some work I did helping out a friend with posing. He says he struggles with them. I'm uploading this with his express permission.

Now, I don't think there's much 'wrong' with his pose, per se. It's a perfectly nice drawing. But because he wanted to anchor his characters in a 3D space more, I gave him some pointers on how to think about the figure as architecture.

Resource Weds: Super simple form

I made this to show a site artist where they may be going astray and though it's very basic I thought I'd share it here, too. I see a lot of people going from cell shading to 'realistic' painting and what they get looks something like on the right there. To fully render an object you need gradation. Even if said object is made up of flat planes, gradations are involved because of the way light sources behave. 

You absolutely don't NEED a blurring brush to do this at all, but it's help...
