Hunger Games simulator: theory edition

Thought it would be fun to use this Hunger Games simulator using philosophers/theorists, where they will all fight each other until only one survivor stands.

I decided to have the last district be the evil one.

Any suggestions? Are there some people I should remove for the sake of more significant ones? Any crucial names that are missing?

My Top 10 Books I've Read in 2022

The annual top 10 book video is out, and hey it's only 3 months late! Thank you everyone for being patient. My next video will be a new installment of the German Revolution series, and after that we'll be holding a new video topic poll.

You can find most of the books mentioned here on our Google Drive:

The Network (1976)

I wanted to mention this great movie, and I figured I could use my Patreon to talk about philosophically or politically relevant movies I've seen.

The Network (1976) is a satire of television culture, but more widely a depiction of multinational capitalism (or late capitalism, or postmodern capitalism, or whatever your preferred label is). As a film about the postmodern era, it depicts the arrival of popular media which concerns itself with absolutely nothing other than whatever brings...

My top 10 books of 2022

If you're interested in seeing the list of my favorite books I read in 2022 before the video comes out, here it is:

(In no particular order, except that the first 5 books are related to the German revolution)
1. The Failure of a Revolution: Germany 1918-1919, by Sebastian Haffner
2. The German Revolution, 1917-1923, by Pierre Broué
3. Working-Class Politics in the German Revolution: Richard Müller, the Revolutionary Shop Stewards, and the Origins of the...

Why are Nietzsche movies like this

After watching the Italian 70s movie about Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, and being amazed at how campy and bizarre it is, I decided to watch an American one next - When Nietzsche Wept (based on the novel by Yalom). This one is almost so bad it's good. Extremely campy acting, dream sequences with awful special effects, and some of the most ridiculous editing I've ever seen, with out-of-place jump cuts, speed-ups and crossfades that look like something out of a bad 2000s mu...

New video + supplementary notes + script

My copyright dispute claim was luckily approved and my new video is now available on YouTube! Unfortunately, the initial copyright-block really gutted its reach so I might have to re-upload it, but at least it's public.

I also wrote the supplementary notes for the video (attached to the post but also available on our Google Drive). If you're interested in the concept of prosthetic memory, or analyses of Total Recall and Blade Runner, you'll find some more reading materials and leads fo...

Anger

Just uploaded the new video on YouTube and it immediately got blocked worldwide because of copyrighted material, I can't express how much I hate copyright laws. I filed a dispute. If that doesn't work I'll try re-editing the footage to get past the copyright censors.

Until then, you can see the video on our Google Drive:

Quick update

Just wanted to let everyone know: currently editing the video on Total Recall, so it should be out before the week ends!

On a side note, I started playing Disco Elysium because several people here have suggested it as a video topic. Loving it so far and it's certainly not as much of a chore to sit through as I thought it might be.

See you soon!

Which video topic should I do next?

Hey, hope you're doing well! While researching the video on Total Recall I came up with a couple of other video ideas, and since it’s been so long since I did a proper poll between different video topics, I wanted to give you a chance to choose which topic you’d prefer to see first.

1) This would be mainly based on a 90s essay by Alison Landsberg that became influential in memory studies, where she introduces the concept of “prosthetic memory” by looking at the movies Total Reca...

Short video coming up

Just to let you know, I'm going to be uploading a very short New Year-themed video before the year ends. It's only a couple of minutes long, but I wanted to give my viewers a little surprise gift before the year ends. Hope you're having a nice holiday time!

New books

I recently went on a trip and bought some new books.

Leon Trotsky on literature and art. Pretty self-explanatory - a collection of texts by Trotsky on the topic of literature and art from throughout his life. Some people might not know that he was not only a revolutionary and a military leader but an avid reader of novels and a literary critic, and quite cutting-edge in some ways.

Then I got 2 Baudrillard books. The first one is a collection of writings from the period 1967-1978,...

Gallery of Germany's Workers' and Soldiers' Councils

Just uploaded my second gallery of the German revolution. This time, I supplemented photos I scanned myself with photos I found online, so as to make the gallery as complete as possible. Descriptions include locations and dates wherever I was able to find them.

Hope you enjoy them, and feel free to use the photos however you like!

Women Philosophers in the Long Nineteenth Century: The German Tradition

A great anthology I've been reading from lately that I'd definitely recommend. The 19th century is an absolutely incredible period for German philosophy, and it included many amazing women philosophers as well. They were able to turn their exclusion from the academic establishment into a strength, as their thought was not constrained by academic disciplinary constraints, and also tends to have a distinctly practical orientation. In some cases, their contributions were later purposefully suppr...

A gallery of the November revolution

As I had planned, I uploaded a gallery of photos from the German revolution that I scanned from German-language books I bought, as a lot of these photos can be difficult to find online. I have enough of these photos to make up several galleries, so this first one consists of scenes from the November revolution specifically (50 photos). This includes photos that I didn't include in my video. Every photo includes a description, place and date whenever available, and context when needed.

New books

Just thought I'd show off two new books I got for my YouTube channel.

The first one is self-explanatory - a collection of texts by influential continental philosophers on the topic of film. Philosophy of film is something I haven't explicitly covered yet, and seems like something that could effectively lend itself to the YouTube format, so I'm looking through it in hopes of finding some video ideas.

The second book is for my current series on the German revolution. It's about Eu...

Where should I upload photo collections?

I'd like to share some of the photos I scanned from German photography books on the revolution, as many of them can't be found online, or are difficult to find/access. Does anyone know what the best place to upload them would be? Some website for making photo galleries where I could add a description of each photo?

Complementary notes for Part 1

The German Revolution of 1918: Revolutionary Berlin

New video is out! I talk about the November revolution, the sailors' revolt, the soldiers' and workers' councils, the new council government, and finally, the event of Bloody Christmas. A lot of time and effort went into this so I hope you'll like it!

I attached the script, and you can also find it on our Google Drive, where I also added the timeline book "Rosa Luxemburg in the German Revolution - A Chronicle":

Video is being edited!

Just wanted to let everyone know that my 2nd video on the German revolution has been written, recorded, and the video editing is more than halfway finished. In all likelihood, it will be released this week. Thank you for your patience. I'm really proud of this one and can't wait to see what you all think of it.

Also, since my last video, I got my first pre-amp, and a new microphone, so the audio quality will be leagues above the last video. That wouldn't have been possible without your...
